From the 2015 Cattle Industry Convention- Forrest Roberts Offers a State of the Beef Industry

As the 2015 Cattle Industry Convention winds down, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked on Friday afternoon about a variety of subjects with the CEO of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Forrest Roberts. Roberts offered his thoughts on the historic year that 2014 was for NCBA members in all segments of the beef cattle industry, the battle over WOTUS, the capture of the US Senate by the GOP and the work by NCBA and other groups in the Beef Checkoff Working group.
Roberts has served as the co-chair of the working group, along with Scott Stuart of the National Livestock Producers- and he has high hopes that an incremental dollar will help expand funding of beef checkoff programs.
He fully expects the NCBA board to approve the MOU without any amendments to the proposal that has come out of the working group. Roberts says that it will take at least two years if everything falls into place quickly- Congress steps up and passes the legislative changes needed, the President signs it and a producer referendum is quickly organized and produces a vote in favor of adding the second dollar to the checkoff. Roberts acknowledges that it will likely be more like three years to get this all accomplished.
