Ron Hays Talks Farm Bill Decisions with FSA Administrator Val Dolcini
Thu, 12 Mar 2015 15:33:50 CDTFarm Director Ron Hays talked with Val Dolcini of the Farm Service Agency of USDA on Thursday afternoon about the decisions that loom for crop producers that want to participate in the federal farm safety net for the 2014-2018 crop years. The FSA Administrator says over three fourths of the nation's land owners have now elected to either update yields or base acres (or leave them alone) and the number of farmers who have already chosen either ARC or PLC is not lagging behind that number "all that much." Dolcini declined to offer specific numbers for either decision.
The head of the FSA also declined to speculate on an extension to the ARC-PLC decision, saying that when it comes to an extension- "I feel relatively confident that it won't happen."
One tactic that farmers might want to consider if they want to delay that final choice for a bit longer- even if there is no extension, a producer could wait until the last moment and then get onto the local office's Register of folks who need to come in after the actual deadline to complete your part of the process. Dolcini says he foresees those after the deadline appointments stretching into most of April and into early May- giving wheat farmers, for example, a little more time to gauge the 2015 wheat crop as we near harvest this coming June.
