KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is visiting with Bob Rodenberger, a partner with Stockman Oklahoma Livestock Marketing, as he talks about what he has seen in the cattle markets this week and an outlook on what is to come.
Rodenberger said the week started off with normal runs all over the state. In smaller auctions in the west and southwest, Rodenberger said they are seeing some bigger runs due to people who have carried calves forward.
“The feeder market was probably set 5 to 7 (dollars cwt) cheaper, and that would be a steer that would be big enough, long weaned enough to go to the feed yard,” Rodenberger said. “Our calf market would be anywhere from 8 to 12 (dollars cwt) cheaper, and in spots, it was 15 to 20 (dollars cwt) cheaper.”
If timely rains do not come, Rodenberger said there is going to be nowhere to go with the calf market.
“We have got to remember we are in the wheat pasture hub of America,” Rodenberger said. “That is where all the cattle come to be grazed.”
Rodenberger said he sees a supply decline coming soon.
“Look at your on-feed numbers- what percentage of heifers that are on feed,” Rodenberger said. “That has not declined. Until that starts to decline, we are still in a dispersal mode.”
This is the first week, Rodenberger said that he has seen younger cows coming to town that were in good breeding condition, and more of that is probably coming soon.
