Coy Davidson of Elgin FFA Wins State Prepared Speech Championship- Will Represent State in Indy

The past five days have propelled Elgin FFA’s Coy Davidson into the role of a State Champion twice over- and becoming a National Contest qualifier with the opportunity to represent Oklahoma at the 97th National FFA Convention this coming October in Indianapolis.

The high school junior won the Agriscience Speech Division State Championship this past Friday in Stillwater at the Interscholastics Contests for Oklahoma FFA- which gave him one of six spots in the state finals of the Prepared Speaking Championship on Tuesday afternoon in Tulsa at the 98th Annual Convention of the Oklahoma FFA.

Coy and the other five State Champs drew for speaking order and he ended up speaking last in the contest. Whether that was the ultimate advantage or not- the five judges named him the best of the best for his speech on Ag Espionage

After the State Speech Finals- Oklahoma Farm Report’s Ron Hays spoke with Coy about the contests and his speech- listen to their conversation by clicking on the link below:

Davidson said he has been working on this speech topic for a couple of years- and that it has been a fascinating topic to research, In his speech- he relates a story of FBI agents stopping Chinese nationals in their effort to smuggle hybrid seeds out of the country in order to reverse engineer the technology and produce a counterfeit product- potentially costing the company who had invested into developing the hybrid millions if not billions of dollars.

Davidson will take the summer to refine his speech with the hope of making it a national winner come October in Indianapolis. He is one of several state winners who automatically become the state’s official entrant in National Contests that are held by the National FFA Organization. Oklahoma has won the National Prepared Speech Contest nine times over the years- including most recently in 2022 when current FFA President Caleb Horne was the National Champion.

The 98th State Convention of the Oklahoma FFA continues today in downtown Tulsa- and Coy Davidson will be one of many FFA members who will be honored on stage as a State Champion for 2024.

Oklahoma FFA is a top ten state in total membership nationally, with currently 29,672 members who belong to a total of 366 chapters.
