Bob Rodenberger Expects Lighter Cattle Runs as Wheat Harvest Progresses

Listen to KC Sheperd talk with Bob Rodenberger about the latest in the cattle markets.

Farm Director KC Sheperd is visiting with Bob Rodenberger, a partner with Stockman Oklahoma Livestock, as he gives the latest on the cattle markets. Rodenberger discussed the recent weather conditions, their impact on the market, and the potential for a pullback in beef demand. He also shared strategies for securing marginal profits and suggested decreased market runs due to reduced demand for grazing land.

While some areas are dryer than others, Rodenberger said as a whole there have been good rains across the state. Rodenberger added that the market was exceptional this week, and the cattle were high quality. Rodenberger said he believes there is some pullback in beef demand, and he recommends ranchers utilize Livestock Risk Protection to lock in a price.

“Put some protection on it, get your margin, and if the market rallies, you are going to get the benefit of it,” Rodenberger said. “Just protect yourselves. There is no need to live in gloom and doom here.”

As wheat harvest progresses, Rodenberger said he expects runs to become a little lighter.

“People aren’t worried about moving cattle when they are cutting wheat,” Rodenberger said.
