Oklahoma and National July 4th Holiday Travel At-A-Glance

AAA is projecting a record-setting travel volume for the upcoming Independence Day holiday, across America and here in Oklahoma.

Here’s a quick look at some of the numbers, trends and tips from AAA:

  • 644,558 – Number of Oklahoma residents who will travel 50 miles or more from home for the July 4 holiday travel period (June 29-July 7), an increase of 5.2% from 2023.
    • 85.5% – Percentage of Oklahoma travelers who will drive to their July 4 holiday destination. The 1.65 million road trippers is a 4.6% increase from last year.
    • 9.4% – Percentage of Oklahomans who will fly to their July 4th holiday destination. The 60,807 traveling by air is an 6.5% increase from last year.

  • 70.9 million – Number of travelers nationwide AAA projects will travel for the July 4 holiday, a 5% increase compared to 2023 and 8% increase over 2019.
    • 60.6 million – Number of travelers nationwide who will drive to their July 4 destinations. This represents an additional 2.8 million road travelers during the holiday in 2023.
    • 5.74 million – Number of travelers nationwide who will fly to their July 4th destinations. This represents a 6.8% increase from 2023.
    • 2.99 million – The record number of passengers security screened by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on June 23, 2024. TSA is expecting to top 3 million travelers screened in the coming days, a new TSA record.
    • 4.6 million – Number of people nationwide expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. This an increase of 9% compared to last year, but this year’s number is shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million
