SUNUP bids Farewell to OSU Extension Crop Marketing Specialist Dr. Kim Anderson

Listen to Kim Anderson’s closing thoughts for producers to manage risks and turn profits on OSU’s SUNUP.

After his 42-year career with Oklahoma State University, SUNUP bids farewell to OSU Extension crop marketing specialist Dr. Kim Anderson.

“I’m hanging up the spurs,” Anderson said. “You’ve got to do it sometime, and I think now is about as good a time as any.”

Throughout his career, Anderson has traversed the state in all directions many times and has freely offered his expertise. His parting thoughts for producers to manage risks and turn profits were to keep records of costs, production, production variability, and to always be familiar with the markets.

“I’ve learned that you cannot predict prices, but we can predict price ranges relatively close. Stay up with the latest technology, and write everything down on paper,” he cautioned.

He gives this advice because early in his career, he was told that if he couldn’t make a profit with a pencil in the office, he wouldn’t likely make one with a tractor in the field.

“I’ve learned from successful producers to stagger yourselves over time. I’ve learned from successful investors to scatter your investments because you can’t predict price,” he reiterated. “If you can get average or better, you are going to make a profit.”

He also warned against sitting out due to a poor weather outlook or lowered prices. “The only way producers can make money is if they produce a commodity to sell because prices are going to go up. They are going to give you the opportunity to make a profit, but you have to have something to sell.”

This week on SUNUP:

  • Dr. Barry Whitworth, OSU Extension veterinarian, says there are reports of cattle deaths due to prussic acid in forage. Dr. Whitworth explains how this happens and how to keep your herd safe this summer.
  • Paul Beck, OSU Extension beef cattle specialist, discusses nitrates in livestock forage and how that issue differs from prussic acid.
  • Wes Lee, OSU Extension Mesonet agricultural coordinator, says the dog days of summer may be a little cooler this year. State climatologist Gary McManus shows the impact of the rains on the state from the recent hurricane.
  • SUNUP attends the OSU Extension Big 3 Field Days, where nearly 2,000 youth participated in livestock judging and other educational activities.
  • Finally, SUNUP bids farewell to our longtime OSU Extension crop marketing specialist Dr. Kim Anderson as he drives his Chevy S-10 off into retirement. Thanks for all you have done for our TV show and the thousands of producers you have helped during your 40-plus years at OSU.
