🦟Protecting People & Pigs: Mosquito Control

Recent flooding and increased rains in the Midwest have increased mosquito problems on farms, posing risks to both pigs and people. Packing plants have reported an increase in insect bites on market swine that can result in up to $7.00-$15.00/head trim loss.

Effective mosquito control and implementing an integrated pest management strategy are essential to maintaining the health, welfare and carcass quality of pigs, as well as preventing diseases and maintaining the health and wellbeing of farm workers.

Environmental Actions to Reduce Mosquitos:

  • Reduce standing water sources and remove anything that has the potential to hold water.
  • Minimize vegetation around barns to reduce areas where mosquitos congregate.
  • Ensure all windows and doors are covered by well-maintained mosquito-proof screens.
  • Use of insecticides such as residual sprays in conjunction with environmental actions for additional control.

Tips for Producers to Avoid Being Bitten:

  • Avoid being outside when mosquitos are most active, particularly at dusk and dawn.
  • Wear loose, long light-colored clothing to cover skin.
  • Prevent mosquito entry into buildings and keep unscreened windows and doors closed.
