Radio Oklahoma Ag Network’s senior farm and ranch broadcaster Ron Hays spoke with Executive Vice President of the OCA Michael Kelsey about the upcoming OCA Convention slated for July 19 & 20, in Norman, Oklahoma, at the Embassy Suites Convention Center.
“Legacy is our theme: building our beef legacy. We’ve got a packed line-up of speakers and resources,” Kelsey said. “Our goal is for people to leave with more than what they came with, especially with things that can impact their individual businesses regarding their own legacies.”
Whether a person is a sixth-generation cattle rancher or a newcomer to the beef-producing, ranching family, there will be something there to benefit their business. This includes networking and mentoring opportunities.
Opening general session speakers will be Dean Carlos Risco, of the OSU College of Veterinary Medicate, and Dr. Jayson Lusk, Dean of the OSU College of Agriculture, and how they have been working together to benefit Oklahoma’s Agricultural industries.
Meteorologist Matt Makens will follow with discussions about La Nina, and how various weather patterns will affect agricultural businesses. Derrell Peel is expected to draw a packed house when he speaks about the cattle market outlook.
NCBA Chief of Government Affairs Ethan Lane will bring everything D.C. to the table, and specifically, how it will impact the legacies of beef producers. Jim Davis, of Davis Angus, and his family will close out the general session with how they have orchestrated the security of their own legacy.
About the OCA Convention tradeshow, Kelsey said, “There are so many services and products that we need to do our business, and there is great competition in all of that. It is to our benefit to go those tradeshows and talk to people and who knows, you might find a twist to a service or product that might be more efficient and economical. That is really what that tradeshow is designed for. It is an opportunity to explore, and there won’t be a better one that is specific to cattle in the state.”
Time was intentionally built into the convention to allow attendees to browse the tradeshow and network for their businesses. The number one source of information for cattle producers is other cattle producers, the OCA Convention will be filled with like-minded people interested in working together to propel the Beef Industry’s business climate forward.
“It’s a time to get together, reflect, and honor each other. We will honor our Cattleman of the Year, and the Junior Cattlemen will have lots of events and leadership activities going on and will honor their Junior Cattleman of the Year. They are very, very important to us,” Kelsey said, “We’ll also recognize our Steer Carcass Challenge for our foundation. There will be dancing in the evening. It’s just a great time to socialize and celebrate, enjoy each other’s company and encourage each other.”
