Central Oklahoma OSU Extension Wheat Conference – El Reno, OK – 8/8/2024

The Canadian County OSU Extension Office will be offering the Central Oklahoma Wheat Conference, Thursday, August 8, 2024. There will be 3 ODAFF CEU credits for private pesticide applicators and research & demonstration credits pending.   The seminar will be held at the Education Building, 220 N. Country Club Rd. El Reno, OK and will begin at 8:00 a.m. with Ag Coffee Connections and the first speaker will kick off at 8:30 a.m.

Kyle Worthington, Canadian County Extension Director, planned the wheat conference around critical management decisions, that Oklahoma wheat farmers are faced with annually.  Each of the speakers will be providing the latest in research and cropping consultation, to assist Oklahoma Wheat Farmers Plans for a successful 2025 wheat harvest. “The key points from each speakers will provide important decision-making tools, as our area farmers plan timely management decisions in efforts to produce another abundant wheat crop next summer,” said Worthington.

The conference agenda and speaker line up will begin with our Ag Coffee Connections from 8-8:30 a.m.   The Keynote speaker is Dr. Derrell Peel, Extension Specialist for Livestock Marketing addressing the current Cattle Market Outlook at 8:30 a.m.

The following morning speakers will be Josh Bushong, West District OSU Extension Agronomist, focusing on the importance of Seed Insecticides at 9:30 a.m. Then at 10:15 a.m. Dr. Meriem Aoun, OSU Assistant Professor, Entomology & Plant Pathology, will address the latest research and benefits of Seed Fungicides.  The morning session will conclude at 11:00 a.m. with Paul Vining, OSU Program Coordinator of the Oklahoma Quality Beef Network.

The luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. and is sponsored by Banner COOP, CHS, Shawnee Mills, and the OSU Extension Office. The meal will be catered by local rancher and food truck owner, Mark Rubes “Six Mile Meat Market”.  The luncheon speaker is Mike Schulte, Oklahoma Wheat Commission providing the current Wheat Council Updates.

The afternoon speakers line up will begin at 1:00 p.m.  with Dr. Liberty Galvin, OSU Extension Weed Scientist. She will be sharing the latest in new and old chemistries for Pre and Post Herbicide Options to start our next crop out clean and how to keep it clean with post herbicide application and options late for next fall and early next spring.  She will be followed by Dr. Brian Arnall, OSU Extension Specialist for Precision Nutrient Management, speaking on Soil Fertility Management for your 2025 Wheat Crop at 1:45 p.m.

The capstone speaker will begin at 2:30 p.m. with Dr. Brett Carver, OSU Regents Professor and Wheat Genetics Chair, sharing the most recent and upcoming OSU Wheat Genetics and Replicated Trials Results. 

The El Reno Replicated Wheat Trials are one of two in the state that collect research harvest yields for wheat, that’s grazed and harvested for grain and planted of grain only with our cooperating partner, Lingo Farms, owned by Jerry and Julie Lingo of El Reno.  They were recently honored at the Oklahoma Agriculture Extension Educators Annual Conference and Banquet held in El Reno on July 9th, as they were recognized as the “Friend of Extension”, for all their years of partnering with OSU Extension. They have provided farm land for canola research and wheat research for our wheat replicated trials for the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and OSU Wheat Team.
