Dry conditions this fall in the winter-wheat-producing Southern Plains are already taking a toll on the newly planted 2023 crop, USDA NASS reported in its weekly Crop Progress report. However, some parts of the region could receive some beneficial rains later this week.
Nationwide Winter Wheat:
Winter wheat planted in the U.S. reached 87 percent, up one percentage point from the previous year and up 2 points from the average. Winter wheat emerged reached 62 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous year and down 4 points from the average.
Winter wheat conditions for the states reported rated 8 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 35 percent poor to very poor. This time last year, nationwide winter wheat was rated 45 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 21 percent poor to very poor.
Nationwide Cotton:
Cotton bolls opening for the U.S. reached 96 percent, up 2 percentage points from the previous year and the average. Cotton harvested reached 55 percent, up 11 percentage points from the previous year and up 8 points from the average.
Nationwide Corn:
Corn harvested in the U.S reached 76 percent, up 3 percentage points from the previous year and up 8 points from the average.

Oklahoma:
Winter wheat planted reached 84 percent, up 1 point from the previous year but down 1 point from normal. Winter wheat emerged reached 62 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 9 points from normal. Winter wheat conditions rated 11 percent good to excellent, 53 percent fair and 36 percent poor to very poor. (This is the first-week winter wheat conditions are accounted for in USDA’s weekly report.)
Cotton harvested reached 29 percent, down 1 point from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Cotton conditions rated 6 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 65 percent poor to very poor. (Since last week, good to excellent cotton conditions have improved by 1 percent and poor to very poor has increased by 7 points.)
Corn harvested reached 92 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 5 points from normal.
Soybeans dropping leaves reached 90 percent, up 2 points from the previous year and up 6 points from normal. Soybeans harvested reached 50 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and up 8 points from normal. Soybean conditions rated 19 percent good to excellent, 44 percent fair and 37 percent poor to very poor. (Since last week, good to excellent soybean conditions have improved by 6 percentage points and poor to very poor conditions have decreased by 6 points.)
Sorghum harvested reached 64 percent, up 1 point from the previous year and up 2 points from normal.
Peanuts mature reached 95 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and up 3 points from normal. Peanuts harvested reached 59 percent, up 16 points from the previous year and up 5 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 84 percent good to excellent and 16 percent fair.
Hay:
The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 50 percent, up 9 points from the previous year and up 22 points from normal. The fourth cutting of other hay reached 45 percent, up 31 points from the previous year and up 33 points from normal.
Range, Pasture and Livestock:
Pasture and range conditions were rated 4 percent good to excellent, 16 percent fair, and 80 percent poor to very poor. Since last week, good to excellent pasture and range conditions have improved by 2 percentage points, but poor to very poor conditions have increased by 3 points.
Livestock conditions rated 20 percent good to excellent, 53 percent fair and 27 percent poor to very poor. Since last week, good to excellent livestock conditions have decreased by 10 percentage points and poor to very poor conditions have increased by 6 points.

Kansas:
Winter wheat planted was 87 percent, down 3 points from the previous year and down 1 point from the average. Winter wheat emerged was 58 percent, down 11 percentage points from the previous year and down 9 from the average. Winter wheat conditions rated 24 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 42 percent poor to very poor.
Cotton bolls opening reached 95 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 1 point from the average. Cotton harvested reached 50 percent, up 40 percentage points from the previous year and up 38 points from the average.
Corn harvested reached 90 percent, up 1 percentage point from the previous year and up 7 points from the average.
Soybeans harvested reached 79 percent, up 12 percentage points from the previous year and even with the average.
Sorghum harvested reached 68 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and up 11 points from the average.

Texas:
Winter wheat planted reached 84 percent, up 6 percentage points from the previous year and up 9 points from the average. Winter wheat emerged reached 55 percent, even with the previous year and down 1 point from the average. Winter wheat conditions rated 4 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 65 percent poor to very poor.
Cotton bolls opening reached 95 percent, up 3 points from the previous year and the average. Cotton harvested reached 48 percent, up 4 points from the previous year and up 5 from the average. Cotton conditions rated 13 percent good to excellent, 17 percent fair and 70 percent poor to very poor.
Corn harvested reached 97 percent even with the previous year and up 7 percentage points from the average. Corn conditions rated 17 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 52 percent poor to very poor.
Soybeans harvested reached 80 percent, down 9 percentage points from the previous year and down 4 points from the average. Soybean conditions rated 13 percent good to excellent, 24 percent fair and 63 percent poor to very poor.
Peanuts mature reached 75 percent, up 9 percentage points from the previous year and up 14 points from the average. Peanuts harvested reached 55 percent, up 10 percentage points from the previous year and up 12 from the average. Peanut conditions rated 30 percent good to excellent, 51 percent fair and 19 percent poor to very poor.
Range and Pasture:
Range and pasture conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 29 percent fair and 57 percent poor to very poor.
