The utilization of LRP under USDA’s Risk Management Agency’s offices has become more popular over the years due to the benefits provided to cattle producers. While these programs are a great tool for cattle already alive and on the ranch, Moss also talked about an option for unborn livestock.

“The unborn steer and heifer contract is an amazing tool for our cow-calf producers,” Moss said. “When we were in September and October of last year, and we saw those record-high futures prices for this coming fall, if a producer knew he was going to have calves hitting the ground in the spring, and he knew those cows were bred, he could go ahead and ensure that unborn calf crop for next fall at an amazingly high price.” He adds that one of the great things about the LRP program is that pricing for your protection is updated daily and is reflected in the current market place.

Going forward, if someone is looking to change livestock agents, Moss said they must fill out a transfer application by June 30th at the latest because July 1st is the start of the 2025 livestock year.

“That is one thing with Livestock Risk Services- we specialize in LRP and it is our bread and butter,” Moss said. “It is all we really do. We would love to have someone’s business if they want to move it to us.”
