Boehringer Ingelheim Awarded Contract for Vaccine Bank to Help Protect US Livestock from Foot and Mouth Disease
|
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded Boehringer Ingelheim a contract to help supply a vaccine bank that will protect U.S. livestock from foot-and-mouth disease.
The contract calls for Boehringer Ingelheim to create and maintain a strategic reserve of frozen vaccine antigen concentrate that the company could quickly formulate into a vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the event of an outbreak in the U.S.
The National Animal Vaccine and Veterinary Countermeasures Bank, commonly known as the U.S. vaccine bank, will let the U.S. stockpile veterinary vaccines and other materials to use in the event of an outbreak of a high-impact foreign animal disease.
FMD is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and other animals with divided hooves. It does not affect people. The U.S. eradicated FMD in 1929, but an outbreak could devastate the livestock industry and, consequently, our national food supply, if left unchecked.

Ag Groups Praise USDA Vaccine Purchase
|
The National Cattlemens Beef Association writes, "We are pleased to see USDA is moving forward with creating a supply of FMD vaccines in the NAVVCB to ensure ranchers and farmers have timely access to a critical tool in the fight against foreign animal diseases, such as FMD. This is a promising first step forward to begin the work authorized in the 2018 Farm Bill; but, more action is needed to strengthen this newly created vaccine bank," said NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs, Allison Rivera.
“The creation of the National Animal Vaccine and Veterinary Countermeasures Bank was a cornerstone of the 2018 Farm Bill, and something cattle producer organizations across the country fought passionately to accomplish. USDA’s purchase of $27.1 million in foot-and-mouth disease vaccine — along with their ongoing efforts to keep the disease out of the country — will help ensure the safety of America’s cattle and beef supply.
The National Pork Council President Howard "AV" Roth said, “Today’s announcement is momentous, representing years of NPPC advocacy to ensure U.S. agriculture is protected should we have an FMD outbreak. While U.S. pork producers and other farmers face significant challenges and uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a solution to FMD preparedness is in our grasp. We thank USDA and especially Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Greg Ibach for proceeding with such an important effort and look forward to continuing to work with the agency to ensure the FMD vaccine bank is adequately stocked.”
The National Milk Producers Federation says, "NMPF appreciates the leadership shown by Congress in including FMD preparedness in the 2018 Farm Bill and USDA in moving forward with implementation,” said Jim Mulhern, president and CEO of NMPF. “A modernized vaccine bank signals appropriate vigilance against a threat that, while not a present danger, is always a potential risk.”

Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Confirmed in Oklahoma Equine
|
On July 7, 2020, the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry confirmed the finding of vesicular stomatitis virus, also known as VSV, at a premise in Washington County. This horse showed lesions in its mouth and on its muzzle.
It's very possible that the disease crossed over from south central or southestern Kansas- as Montgomery County, Kansas has also recently reported a case of the Virus. There have also been cases in Cowley and Sedgwick Counties in Kansas as well.
VSV is a viral disease of horses, donkeys, mules, cattle and swine. Initial symptoms include excessive salivation and reluctance to eat or drink. Clinical signs include vesicles, erosions and sloughing of the skin on the muzzle, tongue, ears, teats and coronary bands of their hooves. Lameness or weight loss may follow. Body temperature may rise immediately before or at the same time lesions first appear.
So far in 2020, VSV has been reported in Kansas, Nebraska, Arizona and Texas.

Beef Exports For May Down 33 Percent But USMEF President Optimistic Numbers Will Improve Later This Year
|
The meat export numbers for the month of May were significantly lower and although stopping short of calling it a one-time event, Dan Halstrom, president and CEO of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, believes better days are ahead. Halstrom spoke with Radio Oklahoma Agriculture Network Associate Farm Director and Editor KC Sheperd.
I think it pretty much followed along the numbers we expected, Halstrom said.
May beef exports were down 33% from a year ago to 79,280 metric tons (mt), with value falling 34% to $480.1 million, as shipments were higher than a year ago to Hong Kong and China but trended lower to most other markets. For January through May, beef exports fell 3% below last year's pace in volume (512,596 mt) and 5% lower in value ($3.14 billion).
The export numbers were down on beef, as we saw the impact of the supply chain disruption that started in April, Halstrom said.
I think especially those markets provided with chilled products is where we saw a lot of the impact in places like Japan, Mexico, Taiwan and Korea, Halstrom said.

Technology allows Pecan Producers to Continue Learning
|
Thanks to technology, Oklahoma State University Extension continues to deliver valuable, research-based information to state residents. Oklahoma pecan growers are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to learn more about what is going on in the pecan industry.
Becky Carroll, OSU Extension associate specialist, fruit and pecans, said even though the Pecan Management Course was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the information is still vital.
To help pecan growers access this pertinent information, Carroll said she is hosting the Pecan Topics Zoom Program.
“We held our first Zoom workshop in May, and it was well received,” Carroll said. “The workshops are geared toward both novice and seasoned growers. What we cover in the Zoom workshops coincides with what currently is going on in the growing season.”

Jointly Funded Project Will Look for Gaps in US Pork Industry Biosecurity
|
The National Pork Board (NPB) and Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) are funding a 12-month long project, with the collaboration of the National Pork Producers Council and the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, to identify gaps in U.S. pork industry national biosecurity. The goal is to prevent entry of foreign animal disease (FAD) into the country by addressing the identified biosecurity gaps. The National Swine Disease Council (NSDC) represents all of these organizations collectively and provides oversight to the project. Following a competitive proposal process, the NSDC awarded EpiX Analytics of Fort Collins, Colorado, with the project.
As the industry has witnessed the recent spread of African swine fever (ASF) in Russia, Europe, and Asia as well as the distraction of the current COVID-19 pandemic, it served as a stark reminder of protecting the U.S. pork industry from FADs. The economic repercussions of the introduction of FADs into the U.S are enormous, making it imperative to protect the industry.
“The National Pork Board supports the leadership provided by the National Swine Disease Council in making this decision to fund research designed to improve the industry’s biosecurity capabilities,” said Dave Pyburn, Chief Veterinarian with the Pork Checkoff. “The council, led by producers, is doing a great job in moving quickly to keep important work like this moving forward during this stressful time in the industry.”

Happy Birthday!!!- American Soybean Association to Celebrate 100 Years
|
The American Soybean Association will celebrate 100 years of representing farmers next month. ASA was formed when brothers Taylor, Noah and Finis Fouts hosted the first Corn Belt Soybean Field Day at their Soyland Farms operation in Camden, Indiana, in September 1920. The event drew nearly 1,000 farmers and their families from six states. The National Soybean Growers' Association, later renamed the American Soybean Association, was formed that day.
On Tuesday, August 4, 2020, ASA, with support from the Indiana Soybean Alliance, will host a 100th-anniversary celebration and historical marker dedication at its birthplace on Fouts Soyland Farm in Camden. The event features a keynote address from Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Steve Censky. The event is free of charge. However, attendance is capped at 180, so those interested must register. For those who cannot make it in person, the event will also be live-streamed.
