Exceptional Quality Marks 2020 Wheat Crop- Mike Schulte Hoping That's Also Seen in Junior Wheat Show Next Week
|
This year’s Oklahoma wheat crop turned out to be one of the best in terms of quality and quantity. After reviewing the latest USDA crop estimate, which pegged the crop at 113.4 million bushels, I visited with Mike Schulte, executive director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission.
We’ve never seen a 42 bushel per acre average yield statewide and certainly that is on par with what we have seen in central and northern Oklahoma, Schulte said.
Making the production even more impressive is the fact that little to no yields were reported in southwest and south-central Oklahoma due to an April freeze.
This is the best yielding and quality crop I have ever seen in my life, Schulte said.
He added veteran producers who have been growing wheat for 40 and 50 years agree.
******************************
Schulte is looking forward to seeing how these quality attributes seen across the state are reflected in the 2020 Junior Wheat Show coming next week.
This annual event provides a big boost for students’ educational funds as $16,000 in scholarship money is up for grabs.
We are going to continue to have the show, but it will look a little different, Schulte said.
Sample collection will be at the Payne County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, July 21 with judging beginning promptly at 8:30.
Samples can be dropped off, Schulte said, but contestants will then have to leave the building.
Samples can also be mailed in but need to be mailed in by Wednesday (July 15) in order to arrive in time.

NCBA CEO Colin Woodall Responds to Burger King #CowsMenu Campaign
|
Members of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association are disappointed by the release of Burger King’s #CowsMenu campaign today.
The nation’s burger restaurants can, and many of them do, play a vital role in helping improve beef’s sustainability and reducing its environmental footprint. Unfortunately, Burger King has chosen a different path, relying on kitschy imagery that misrepresents basic bovine biology – cattle emissions come from burps, not farts – and on the potential impact of a single ruminant nutrition study that was so small and poorly conceived, it was dismissed by many leading NGOs and beef industry experts.
The U.S. is already a leader in sustainable beef production. The EPA attributes just 2 percent of greenhouse gas emissions to the American cattle industry, and yet cattle farmers and ranchers remain committed to continuous improvement and producing beef more sustainably.

NAWG Calls for 2020 Crop COVID Relief, Inclusion of All Wheat Classes in CFAP
|
On July 9, 2020, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a list of additional commodities that have been added to the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) and indicated that additional commodities could be announced as eligible in the coming weeks. Durum and hard red spring (HRS) wheat classes are covered under CFAP while hard red winter (HRW), soft red winter (SRW), and soft white wheat classes are not currently included in the program.
On Friday, NAWG sent a follow-up letter to USDA calling on the Agency to make assistance available for all classes of wheat and to begin providing assistance for 2020 crop losses as wheat harvest is well underway.
“CFAP provides important assistance to producers of hard red spring (HRS) and durum wheat, two classes which comprise about 30% of 2019 wheat production,” stated NAWG President and Cass City, MI wheat grower Dave Milligan. “The program continues to leave out over 70 percent from other classes of wheat despite farmers facing historically low prices.”

As Boxed Beef Prices Have Dropped Significantly in Recent Months, Dr. Glynn Tonsor Says The Biggest Concern Now is on The Demand Side.
|
When wholesale boxed beef prices skyrocketed earlier this spring a major concern was on the supply side. Dr. Glynn Tonsor, Kansas State University Extension livestock market economist has been looking closely at this issue and says today the main concern is on the demand side as boxed beef prices have dropped significantly.
In early May the wholesale boxed beef trade shot up to $475 per hundredweight because of reduced slaughter capacity. Today the market has dropped more than $200. Is this the bottom?
I think there is a couple of big pieces to that, Tonsor said.
One is the number of animals we’re processing, which is down about 6 percent compared to last year, on a cumulative basis, but we’re actually ahead of last year for this period, Tonsor said.
We are no longer in a tight supply problem as we were in April and May
The biggest uncertainty is on the demand side, Tonsor said.

China Makes Biggest U.S. Corn Buy Ever
|
China made the biggest purchase of U.S. corn in history on Tuesday. It’s the second massive deal that China has made for corn in less than a week. .
The USDA says private exporters report that China bought 1.76 million tons of corn for shipment during the 2020-2021 marketing year that starts on September 1st. The sale passed the previous record of a one-day corn sale to China that totaled 1.45 million tons in December of 1994. The deal followed a sale of 1.365 million tons to China on July 10th, a deal that was spread out over two marketing years.
Last week, China increased its corn and soybean import forecasts for the current season as the country expects to step up its agricultural purchases from the United States. China also booked deals to buy 129,000 tons of soybeans in the 2020-2021 marketing year. Beijing agreed to buy $80 billion worth of U.S. ag products over the next two years in the Phase One trade deal between the two countries.
