Six Hour Marathon Meeting Results in Plan to Address Inadequate Cash Cattle Trade Price Discovery
|
Ahead of the Wednesday morning Live Cattle Marketing Committee meeting at the Summer Business Meeting of the NCBA, I was told by one staffer to expect either a thirty minute meeting- or else maybe a five hour marathon. Turns out- it was right at 6 hours and proved to be one of the most contentious debates ever seen at a cattle industry meeting-
Colin Woodall
, CEO of the NCBA says the only topic that evoked this level of passion in his 17 years with the group were the debates over the Renewable Fuel Standard and Ethanol back in the 2008-2009 time period.
After hours of debate that was getting more strident with each motion- the chair called for a five minute recess- which last over thirty minutes (here's a pic of the hallway negotiations- you can see Ross Wilson of TCFA, Michael Kelsey of OCA and Mike Deering of Missouri among others)
|
The resolution that came together after those hallway discussions states "NCBA supports a voluntary approach that:
1. Increases frequent and transparent negotiated trade to a regionally sufficient level, to achive robust price discovery determined by NCBA funded and directed research in all major cattle feeding regions and
2. Includes triggers to be dtermined by a working group of NCBA producer leaders by October 1, 2020.
Be it further resolved, if the voluntary approach does not achive robust price discovery as determined by NCBA funded and directed research, and the meet the established triggers that increase frequent and transparent negotiated trade to a regionally sufficient level, and triggers are activated, NCBA will pursue a legislative or regulatory solution.
Be it further resolved, NCBA will support a three year review/sunset provision on any negotiated trade solutions implemented to allow for a thorough cost benefit analysis to be conducted."

United We Steak Beef Promotion Campaign Showing Good Results Says NCBA's Alisa Harrison
|
Alisa Harrison,
senior vice president of global marketing and research for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association says the new beef promotion campaign “United We Steak” is showing good results. We spoke at the NCBA summer meeting in Denver this week.
United We Steak is a campaign launched at the end of June to promote and celebrate grilling as a way to bring families together.
Just in the first three weeks of the campaign we have reached 153 million people and 34 million video views
from videos promoted on national and state beef web sites, Harrison said.
We have also had almost 550,000 visits to the Untied We Steak website
Some of the data we have seen over the last 4- or 5-months indicate consumers are telling us they are eating more servings of beef each week than they were before the pandemic, she said.

Infiltration Test Clearly Shows Benefits of Good Soil Health Management
|
Most people have heard the old cliché, “The root of the problem.”
However, an infiltration test being conducted by the Oklahoma Conservation Commission (OCC), the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts (OACD) is using color dyed water to focus in part on the root of the solution – how water follows old root paths and other channels.
“We know that when soils heal, they build preferential flow paths that move large volumes of water deeply into the soil in a short time,” said
Greg Scott, OCC Soil Scientist. “The ability of a soil to move water rapidly into the subsoil saves that water from being at risk for evaporation from sun, wind, and heat.”
With few exceptions, producers often view rain as a gift. Conservation practices strive to make sure that gift is not wasted. These particular fields in Dewey County in western Oklahoma have been in a soil health management system for several years. One of those fields had just been planted to double-crop corn, the other was planted to soybeans.

Lankford Advocates for Rural Health Access
|
Senator James Lankford (R-OK) today spoke on the Senate floor to advocate for rural access to healthcare by calling on his Senate colleagues to include his Rural Hospital Closure Relief Act in the next bill addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.
The bill would be a permanent solution to update Medicare’s Critical Access Hospital (CAH) designation so more rural hospitals can qualify for this financial lifeline and continue to serve their communities with quality, affordable healthcare services.
In April Lankford and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) wrote a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar to ensure rural hospitals have the needed support to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and maintain financial stability to continue severing their communities. The two members also called on Senate Leadership to clarify eligibility for publicly owned hospitals and similar care providers within the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

Mystery Packages from China Seed Community with Suspicion and Risk
|
Oklahoman's are being asked to go against their natural curiosity and green-thumb tendencies, setting aside mail deliveries of mystery seeds from China instead of planting them.
The packages have turned up in several other states as well, including Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio and Washington, according to reports from those states’ departments of agriculture. Many of the seeds have been mailed in white or yellow pouches with the words “China Post” in English and other words in Chinese lettering. Some of them falsely suggest jewelry inside; others provide no clues about contents.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture quickly provided guidance in conjunction with state agriculture departments because of the scale of risk involved, said Morgan Vance, spokeswoman at the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. The state department is also working with Oklahoma State University Extension for collection and disposal of the seeds.
