Oklahoma Secretary of Ag Blayne Arthur Talks Top Ten Bridge Rating, Meat Processing Grant Competition and More
|
On Friday evening, I caught up with Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture Blayne Arthur at the Express Ranches "Big Event" at the ranch in Yukon. Secretary Arthur was asked to deliver the invocation- and after that- we talked about several issues important to rural Oklahoma- starting with the Top Ten rating on bridges across Oklahoma.
Secretary Arthur praised her boss, Governor Kevin Stitt as well as Transportation Secretary Tim Gatz for their efforts to get Oklahoma to Top Ten status in bridges. Arthur says that she and Secretary Gatz talk frequently and that he understands the importance of roads and bridges in helping move the livestock and grain produced on farms and ranches into commerce. "It's exciting to see the movement we have made in the state of Oklahoma in the rankings of our bridges" and she looks forward to even more improvements on rural roads across the state.
Secretary Arthur also offered an update on the CARES Act grant of $10 million dollars designated by Governor Stitt to be used by Oklahoma Meat Processors to improve their infrastructure to expand beef and pork processing in the state. She says that as of Friday afternoon(application deadline was close of business Friday August 14) that 150 applications had been submitted- she did not have a total number of dollars that had been requested in total by the applicants- but it will be several times that ten million dollars that are available. The Department of Ag will rank the applications and award the money to those that can deliver the most impact for the dollars invested- and the improvement that should include more shakel space in the state to process animals should be seen quickly- as the money has to be utilized by the end of this calendar year.

Tulsa State Fair Junior Livestock Show Will Happen September 29th Through October 4th Despite State Fair Cancellation
|
The Tulsa State Fair is cancelled for 2020- but there will be a Tulsa State Fair Junior Livestock Show within the same time frame of the traditional State Fair. The fairgrounds at Expo Square will be open and receiving livestock on September 29th- with the last of the showing to happen Sunday, October 4th. Two events will happen after that Sunday- a junior breeding gilt sale will happen online on Monday, October 5th and the Night of Champions Premium Sale is set to occur on Tuesday, October 6th.
According to the Tulsa Fair Livestock Exhibitors Facebook page- the junior market show will not be a "terminal" show here in 2020- "All Tulsa State Fair Market Animal Shows are non terminal this year with the exception of the Grand and Reserve Grand Champions." It also appears that the Prospect Steer Show and Showmanship contests will not be held- and the Tulsa State Fair says for those contests that entry fees will be refunded. It also appears from the comments on the Facebook page is that there will be no vendors on the fairgrounds this year and whether the public will be allowed on the grounds is still being decided.
Details of the actual schedule can be seen in our webstory on the Blue Green Gazette section of our website- click on the button below.

Record U.S. Sorghum Sales to China Reported
|
U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service data issued yesterday shows U.S. sorghum purchases last week rang in the biggest week ever at almost 32 million bushels sold. That topped the previous record week at 23 million bushels, which took place in December 2014.
“U.S. sorghum farmers should be encouraged by these continued sales to China,” said National Sorghum Producers and Sorghum Checkoff CEO Tim Lust. “We are making improvements to our crop not only from a yield and technology standpoint, but also through quality measures, which are translating directly to international buyers and noticeably improved basis numbers across the country.”
According to reports from the USDA, sorghum sales for the current market year totaled 282,386 mt along with 527,500 mt for the coming 2020-2021 marketing year. All totaled, sorghum sales for the week were 809,886 mt or about 32 million bushels. This one week of sales reflects approximately 9 percent of the total U.S. sorghum production this year.

House Ag Committee Chair Collin Peterson Leads the Call to Have Dairy Provisions in USMCA Enforced
|
A bipartisan coalition of House lawmakers sent a letter urging the U.S. government to proactively enforce the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s (USMCA) dairy-related provisions. This letter is being applauded by the U.S. dairy industry, as the benefits that USMCA secures for America’s dairy farmers, processors and exporters will only be realized if the deal is fully enforced.
Representatives Ron Kind (D-WI), Tom Reed (R-NY), Collin Peterson (D-MN), Glenn “GT” Thompson (R -PA), Anthony Brindisi (D-NY), Russ Fulcher (R-ID), Xochitl Torres Small (D-NM), and Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH) led this effort. In total, 104 members of Congress signed the letter.
“A strong demand for U.S. dairy exports abroad drives economic growth and creates jobs here at home. USMCA is designed to allow the U.S. industry to fulfill this demand from two of our largest dairy customers and we cannot allow Canada or Mexico to undermine the important gains secured in this trade deal. We are working alongside Congress, the U.S. Trade Representative and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ensure Canada and Mexico are held accountable to their trade commitments,” said Tom Vilsack, president and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council."

If You Want Ample Supplies of Beef for Burgers- Beef Imports Must Be Part of the Plan
|
Importing foreign beef is a controversial topic among some cattle producers but Kent Bacus, director of international trade and market access for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, said it’ a good thing during a recent interview with yours truly.
Trade is one of the most misunderstood issues out there, Bacus said. We must take an objective view and understand 85 percent of what we produce is sold here, he said.
Most of what we are importing are lean trimmings going into hamburger.
Bacus noted 95 percent of the beef produced here is finished in a feed yard. However, we don’t produce enough to meet the ground beef demand.
Blending imported trimmings into domestic ground beef is preferred to be ceding the hamburger market to another protein source such as chicken, Bacus said.
Most of the imported beef comes from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Mexico.
Listen to this part of our conversation with Kent Bacus on this latest Beef Buzz.

Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association Among the Groups Weighing in on Dietary Guidelines
|
Like many livestock and meat industry groups, the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association submitted comments to the USDA and the HHS regrading the report from the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. According to Michael Kelsey, Executive Vice President of the OCA, OCA emphasized three key points in our comments.
1. Beef is a unique dense source of key nutrients needed at all life stages, including early year physical development. Beef is an excellent source of protein, vitamin B-12, zinc, selenium, niacin and vitamin B-6. Additionally, beef is a good source for the nutrients phosphorus, riboflavin, iron and choline.
2. The dietary guidelines should avoid considerations that fall outside the nutrient scope such as sustainability of food supply and, in the case of animal proteins, management practices. Most of these considerations are championed by entities such as animal rights groups and environmental groups with no real interest in overall nutrition quality but rather their own agendas to eliminate specific foods.
3. It is important to recognize the nutrient power of beef as compared to other protein sources. Beef is naturally nutrient dense fitting very well into reasonable calorie oriented diet considerations for all Americans.

AND Finally- Have You Watched Cole the Cornstar???
|
I was directed by a broadcast friend to the YouTube page of a guy by the name of Cole the Cornstar at the end of this past week- and I was blown away by the number of followers this 22 year old kid from Iowa has- as he and his dad- Daddy Cornstar- talk about life on their farm and educate consumers along the way how tough farming can be.
His most recent posts are about the damages done by the Derecho storm of last week- They don't embellish it- but they sure as heck don't sugarcoat the challenges either.
Here is the video of the episode I watched that shows their farm suffered a half million dollars worth of damage last week- and that number may rise depending on how much loss they end up with their corn crop- the jury is out on that.
Enjoy Cole the Cornstar!
