Farm Bureau Thanks Rep. Collin Peterson for His Service
|
House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson was defeated in the race for Minnesota’s 7th District. The following statement may be attributed to American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall:
“We at the American Farm Bureau Federation would like to express our thanks to Rep. Peterson for his decades of service in the House of Representatives. Throughout his years on the House Agriculture Committee, especially his years as the committee’s chairman, Congressman Peterson has been a leader for rural America on such important issues as the farm bill, regulatory reform and new trade deals. He made it clear through his work that his politics are grounded in farmers, livestock producers and rural America. That will be his legacy.”

OKFB Secures Success in 2020 Elections
|
Oklahoma Farm Bureau members are celebrating a fruitful 2020 election cycle after Tuesday’s general election resulted in successful races by numerous candidates supported by the organization’s grassroots-driven political action committees.
All six congressional candidates endorsed by OKFB’s federal Ag PAC were elected, while 87% of candidates supported by the organization’s state-level political action committee, the OKFB Ag Fund, were chosen to serve in public office in 2020.
“Both the Ag PAC and the Ag Fund exist to give farmers and ranchers a voice in the elections that impact our very livelihoods,” said Keeff Felty, Jackson County farmer and OKFB Ag PAC and Ag Fund chair. “After all of our work to carefully research and consider each race, it’s great to see success for a large majority of the candidates we supported. We look forward to working with each of them in our efforts to secure a bright future for agriculture and the rural way of life.”
Congressional candidates supported by the federal OKFB Ag PAC included Sen. Jim Inhofe; Rep. Kevin Hern, 1st Congressional District; Rep. Markwayne Mullin, 2nd Congressional District; Rep. Frank Lucas, 3rd Congressional District; Rep. Tom Cole, 4th Congressional District; and newly elected Rep. Stephanie Bice, 5th Congressional District.

Despite Adjustments Due To Covid, Oklahoma Rancher John Pfeiffer Looking Forward to This Weekend's American Angus Assoc. Convention
|
The 137th annual meeting of the American Angus Association is Nov. 8-9 in the Kansas City, Mo., Convention Center and like many similar events during this pandemic, association officials have had to adjust. John Pfeiffer, Mulhall, Okla., rancher and past president of the American Angus Association is a delegate to the convention and recently visited with me about the convention details.
We’ve made a whole lot of adjustments this year, Pfeiffer said. We’ve cancelled the regular conference and moved it back to just a two-day event on Sunday and Monday.
We going to have both virtual and in-person options as it is going to be a whole different look, he said.
I have talked to people who are driving and stopping to do business along the way, Pfeiffer said.
Jordy Nelson, former NFL and Kansas State football player, will address the group on Sunday, Nov. 8. Growing up on a Kansas farm, Nelson can relate to the challenges faced by cattle producers and will talk to the group about taking success to the next level.
Kevin Ochsner, a Colorado rancher and business consultant, will talk to the group on Nov. 9 about making decisions that will improve their personal and professional performance.

Oklahoma State, NEO, USDA team up to Enhance Native American Education Opportunity
|
Oklahoma State University and Northeastern Oklahoma Agriculture and Mechanical College are collaborating to provide four Native American students with scholarships to complete dual undergraduate degrees in plant and soil sciences and entomology.
The collaborative scholarship effort is being funded by a $289,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture as part of its New Beginning for Tribal Students program, which makes competitive grants available to provide support specifically targeted for students of America’s tribal nations.
Both Oklahoma State and NEO are well known for having strong Native American student populations, specifically in their agriculture programs, said Brian Arnall, a professor and OSU Extension precision crop nutrient management specialist with the university’s department of plant and soil sciences.

Growth Energy Statement on 2020 Election Results
|
Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor issued the following statement on the 2020 Election Day results:
“Across the heartland, we saw ethanol champions run and win on their support for biofuels. In the lead up to this election, few issues were agreed upon, but one thing remained true – candidates on both sides of the aisle, incumbents and challengers, recognized ethanol’s role as the engine of the rural economy and a vital tool against climate change. On behalf of Growth Energy, I congratulate the winners of last night’s election and thank those champions that have stood with us but did not prevail in their race. We look forward to educating newly elected lawmakers and continuing to work with our allies in Congress to advance biofuels’ role in our nation’s clean energy policy.”

Heliae® Agriculture Helps Producers Rethink Soil Productivity
|
Healthy soil is within the reach of every farm and ranching operation. The principles that govern healthy, productive soils are simple: nourish, build and leverage the soil microbiome. These are the principles in which Heliae® Agriculture continues to invest time, money and research-building a product portfolio that delivers value far beyond the growing season.
Exemplifying the belief that soil health is an opportunity and responsibility for every farm, Heliae® Agriculture has announced a virtual 2-day educational event: Rethinking Soil Productivity, to showcase soil health opportunities that farms in every geography, of all scope and scale, can take advantage of.
"Soils are becoming severely degraded. It's our mission at Heliae® Agriculture to help change that and provide growers with returns that deliver more than yield," says Heliae President and CEO, Eric Lichtenheld. "We focus on changing soil through a regenerative approach and share our approach and solutions with growers nationwide to help aid their long term success."

Dr. Glenn Selk on Breeding Cows and Heifers on Wheat Pasture
|
Dr. Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Emeritus Extension Animal Scientist, offers herd health advice as part of the weekly series known as the "Cow Calf Corner" published electronically by Dr. Peel and Dr. Glenn Selk. Today, Dr. Selk talks about breeding cows and heifers on wheat pasture.
Many areas of Oklahoma received some moisture this past week, giving hope that wheat pasture may be available for use as a winter feed. Some producers may have questions about the utilization of wheat pasture for growing replacement heifers or cows before, during, and after the breeding season. Anecdotal reports of unsatisfactory breeding performance occasionally surface when replacement heifers have been exposed to bulls or AI while grazing wheat forages. Therefore an Oklahoma State University study was conducted to compare reproductive performance of heifers grazing wheat pasture before, and during breeding, with heifers grazing wheat pasture until approximately 3 weeks before breeding.
In each of two years, 40 spring born Angus and Angus crossbred heifers were placed on wheat pasture in December and randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups in mid March. Group one (Wheat Pasture; n=20) remained on wheat pasture (mean crude protein = 26.6 %) through estrus synchronization and fixed-time AI. Group two (Dry Lot; n=20) was placed in drylot and had free choice access to a corn-based growing ration (11.1% crude protein) through estrus synchronization and fixed time AI. The heifers were inseminated on about April 5 both years. Heifers were exposed to fertile bulls starting 10 days after fixed time AI for 45 more days. Fixed time AI conception was determined at 32 days after AI by ultrasonography.
