AFBF and Other Ag Groups Welcomes Nomination of Tom Vilsack for Agriculture Secretary
|
President-elect Joe Biden is expected to nominate Tom Vilsack to serve as Secretary of Agriculture.
The following statement may be attributed to American
“The American Farm Bureau Federation welcomes the news that Tom Vilsack will be nominated to be Secretary of Agriculture. His leadership as the 30th Secretary of Agriculture and as Governor of a state reliant on agriculture is evidence of his qualification to serve in this role.
“Tom Vilsack understands that the agriculture sector is far more complex than most people understand. He believes in a ‘big tent’ philosophy that supports all types of production and understands the importance of respecting farmers and ranchers as partners worthy of support in the race to achieve sustainability goals.
NCBA also issued the following response: "Former USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack is adding another chapter to an already storied career in agriculture. He has the unique skill set to be able to hit the ground running on day one and cattle producers are thankful for this continuity," said NCBA CEO Colin Woodall. “Secretary Vilsack knows the issues facing America’s cattle producers and can utilize his extensive experience to showcase the positive impact we have on food security, nutrition, and our natural resources."
“NAWG congratulates former Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for being nominated to serve under the Biden-Harris Administration as Secretary for the USDA.
“We look forward to working again with former Secretary Vilsack, and are ready to engage with any new staff at USDA.
“Former Secretary Vilsack’s understanding of policies important to wheat will be critical as the Department continues work to address the many economic challenges facing farmers across the country. Previously, his willingness to meet and listen to stakeholders as the USDA develops programs and regulations was key. Former Secretary Vilsack’s wealth of experience and his knowledge of agriculture are important attributes for this role.”

OKFB's Rodd Moesel with His 2020 Review, the Upcoming Virtual Convention, and Looking Toward 2021
|
Registration opened last week for the American Farm Bureau Federation Virtual Convention. This year's AFB Virtual Convention will be held from Jan. 10-13, 2021. For the first time, registration fees are being waived to give all Farm Bureau members and anyone interested in agriculture the opportunity to experience one of agriculture's premier events from the comfort and safety of home.
President of Oklahoma Farm Bureau, Rodd Moesel, said they are disappointed that they won't get to do the in-person event this year. Still, they are hoping that with the convention being virtual this year, more Oklahomans will get to join. "It's free, and anybody can sign on. You can get registered by going to the Oklahoma farm bureau website, and you can attend just the opening session, or you can attend all the programming from Sunday, January 10 to January 13."
Moesel said one of the good things about the convention being virtual is that viewers can pick and choose which sessions they want to attend or hear all the sessions. Moesel said there would be lots of great speakers and breakout sessions with subjects of interest to folks no matter what phase of agriculture they are currently in. Featured speakers for the virtual convention include Dirty Job's, Mike Rowe, Rorke Denver, and Beth Ford. Moesel said Rowe has become a great spokesman for Agriculture, "Mike Rowe has become a hero to many of us in agriculture and rural America, so it's going to be really cool to have him as part of the program."

Tyler Norvell Says They Are in Final Stages of Preperation For The Cattlemen's Congress in January
|
A new cattle show called the Cattlemen’s Congress is scheduled for Jan. 2-17 in Oklahoma City.
The show replaces the traditional Denver Livestock Show which had to cancel due to the pandemic.
Tyler Norvell, executive of the Oklahoma Youth Expo, is on the board of directors for the new show and during an interview this week with me said planning for the new show has been intense.
We’re drinking from a firehouse trying to get ready for this thing, Norvell said.
Well over a dozen different breeds will be represented as they are all having their national shows here, Norvell said.
It’s fun for our OYE staff working with all these different people, he said.
This is a huge part of their livelihood and commerce for 2021 and making sure they are able to market their livestock is at the forefront for us, Norvell said.
All the breeds are having a junior and open show and sale for seed stock, he said.

Employment Outlook is Promising for New College Graduates in Agriculture
|
A new report, released today by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and Purdue University, shows a strong job demand for new college graduates with degrees in agricultural programs. U.S. college graduates can expect approximately 59,400 job opportunities annually between 2020 and 2025. This reflects a 2.6 percent growth from the previous five years. Employer demand will exceed the supply of available graduates with a bachelor’s degree or higher in agriculture-related fields.
“Future development of our complex global food system requires the brightest minds from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and disciplines working together to solve the challenges before us,” said Parag Chitnis, acting director of USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. “This report shows that students across America who are studying food, agriculture and related sciences to take on these challenges have made a sound career choice and will graduate into a strong and growing job market in the years ahead.”
The preparation of the report began before the coronavirus pandemic when global socio-economic conditions looked much differently than they do at the release of this report.

Registration for 2021 Beltwide Cotton Conferences Now Open
|
The 2021 Beltwide Cotton Conferences' final program is now available under the 2021 Beltwide Details icon of the BWCC home page, www.cotton.org/beltwide where participants can register for this virtual forum aimed at speeding the transfer of new technology to U.S. cotton producers and other industry members. As previously announced, the NCC will conduct the 2021 BWCC virtually on January 5-7 (Tuesday-Thursday) due to continued concerns regarding COVID-19’s spread.
Registration costs for the 2021 BWCC have been reduced due to the virtual format: $180 for NCC/Cotton Foundation members, university and USDA researchers, extension personnel, associations and consultants; $500 for non-U.S. research, extension, associations, and consultants; $350 for non-NCC/Foundation members; and $75 for students. Registration will continue after the virtual 2021 BWCC concludes to permit registered participants access to the event’s on-demand content.
The 2021 BWCC will begin at 8 a.m. on January 5 with the half-day Cotton Consultants Conference which is open to all attendees. Among topics planned for that session are a National Weather Service discussion of prediction models/long range forecasting as well as university cotton physiologists describing weather models’ influence on cotton physiology decisions including growth regulator use and leaf shed practices. EPA officials will review the availability status of dicamba and other plant protection chemistries, and a panel will discuss Bt resistance management and EPA’s new proposed requirements. Participants also will get an update on cotton leafroll dwarf virus and product updates from various agribusiness companies.

NASDA promotes Natural Resource Stewardship with USDA-NRCS and others Through Renewed MOU
|
Today the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, along with seven additional agricultural associations, renewed a five-year memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service. The MOU fulfills the goal of helping agricultural producers maintain the viability of their operations and sustain and conserve natural resources for future generations.
“We’re proud to continue investing in farmers as they serve as natural stewards of the environment,” NASDA CEO Dr. Barb Glenn said. “NASDA members understand that nurturing our environment is key to building climate resiliency, and working in partnership with natural resource stakeholders is the most effective way to advance climate solutions.”
Objectives within the MOU include:
· Continue to recognize successful local partnerships under the Certified Crop Advisor Conservationist of the Year Award
· Identify new technology that aligns with conservation goals and propose its adoption on farms
· Plan for educational outreach, support and promotion of soil health and 4R (Right source, Right rate, Right time, Right place) best management practices.

Biofuels Coalition Files Brief Challenging 31 Small Refinery Exemptions in 2018
|
Growth Energy, Renewable Fuels Association, National Corn Growers Association, National Biodiesel Board, American Coalition for Ethanol, and National Farmers Union today filed a brief challenging EPA’s August 2019 decision to exempt 31 small refineries from their obligations to comply with the Renewable Fuel Standard in 2018. Collectively known as the Biofuels Coalition for this case, the group submitted its filing to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, arguing that EPA lacked the authority to issue such exemptions and that it acted in an arbitrary and capricious manner in attempting to do so
In its brief the Coalition asserts some of the same arguments that the Renewable Fuels Association, NCGA, NFU, and ACE successfully made in the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals against three small refinery exemptions, including the fact that EPA lacked the authority to extend small refinery exemptions that had lapsed in earlier years. The Coalition also took on EPA’s failure to provide its own refinery-by-refinery analysis to support a finding of a disproportionate economic hardship, particularly in the 20 instances where EPA decided to grant a full exemption despite the Department of Energy recommending that only a partial exemption be granted. In addition, the Biofuels Coalition posed the same question on which the Tenth Circuit found EPA inexcusably silent: If all RFS compliance costs are ultimately passed through to end users and recovered, as EPA has repeatedly maintained, how is it that any small refinery can suffer a disproportionate economic hardship?
“Among all of EPA’s indefensible actions surrounding small refinery exemptions in recent years, the Agency’s two-page decision to grant 31 waivers from 2018 RFS compliance really takes the cake. Enough is enough,” Coalition representatives said. “The EPA had absolutely no legal basis for continuing to destroy demand for renewable fuels, which is contrary to the intent of Congress for the RFS program. When it adopted the RFS in 2005, Congress clearly intended for small refinery exemptions to be temporary in nature. Yet, 15 years later, some refiners-most of whom have readily complied with RFS obligations in the past-are trying to claim they need more time to prepare for compliance with RFS requirements. If these exemptions were meant to be a ‘bridge to compliance’, as concluded by the courts, it should be obvious that we all crossed that bridge many years ago.”

2021 Western Farm Show in Kansas City Cancelled
|
The 2021 Western Farm Show, scheduled for February 19-21 in Kansas City, has been canceled by the Western Equipment Dealers Association, which is the event producer. Health and has said in a written release that safety concerns related to COVID-19 are the reasons the show won’t happen next year.
“Given the long history of this event as one of the Midwest’s premier farm shows, this is a very disappointing step to take,” says show manager Ken Dean. “But it’s the responsible decision for the protection of everyone involved during the current pandemic.”
The Western Farm Show is one of the region’s largest indoor agricultural attractions, featuring 400,000 square feet of exhibit space filled with new farm and ranch equipment, as well as thousands of other Agricultural products and services.
The event draws farmers and ranchers from all over the Midwest. Dean noted that the 2021 show would have marked the event’s 60th anniversary, which will now be celebrated in 2022.
