November Beef Exports Largest in More than a Year; 2020 Pork Exports Top Previous Annual Record
|
U.S. beef exports posted one of the best months on record in November, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). November was also a strong month for pork exports, which already surpassed the full-year volume and value records set in 2019.
"Demand for U.S. beef in the global retail sector has been outstanding and we expect this to continue in 2021," said USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom. "Unfortunately, foodservice continues to face COVID-related challenges. We expect a broader foodservice recovery this year, especially from mid-2021, but will likely still see interruptions in some markets. For U.S. pork, it's great to set new records with an entire month to spare, but especially gratifying to see a diverse range of markets contributing to U.S. export growth. USMEF still expects strong pork demand from China in 2021, but we're seeing a much-needed rebound in other regions, especially in Western Hemisphere markets."
November beef exports totaled 115,337 metric tons (mt), up 6% from a year ago and the largest since July 2019. Export value climbed 8% year-over-year to $707.5 million. November beef muscle cut exports were the third largest on record at 91,338 mt (up 13%, trailing only July and August 2019), valued at $630.4 million (up 11%). November exports to China and Guatemala set new monthly records, while shipments to Mexico were the largest since 2016. Exports to Taiwan remained strong and are well-positioned to set in a new annual record in 2020.
Through November, beef exports were 6% lower year-over-year in volume (1.13 million mt) and down 7% in value ($6.9 billion). January-November muscle cut exports were 3% below 2019 in volume (883,012 mt) and 6% lower in value ($6.11 billion).

Dr. Seth Byrd Named Beltwide Extension Cotton Specialist of the Year
|
Seth Byrd, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension cotton agronomist, was named Beltwide Extension Cotton Specialist of the Year, Jan. 6, 2020, during the virtual Beltwide Cotton Conferences.
The award, sponsored by BASF, was announced during an online event virtually attended by cotton specialists, BASF personnel and retired Extension specialists from across the Cotton Belt.
Tyson Raper, University of Tennessee cotton and small grains specialist and the 2019 recipient, presented the award.
According to a story from Southwest Farm Press, Byrd addressed fellow cotton specialists from 17 states across the Cotton Belt who evaluate and select the award recipient based on a number of considerations, including exceptional leadership and outstanding industry service.
"Thank you. I don't think I deserve it," Byrd said. "It means a lot."
Byrd also referenced previous winners. "There are a lot of big names on that list. I've always thought of that list as the cream of the crop. I don't think I belong on it but hopefully one day I'll earn it. I appreciate it."

Will the Surge in Land Prices Continue?
|
What started out with better than expected sales prices at land auctions prior to fall harvest extended into very strong prices at some auctions during October and November, surprising many.
“Farmers National Company had auction sales in several states during this time where land sold near levels last seen in 2012. In specific instances, prices for good quality cropland in the heart of the Midwest are up hundreds to thousands of dollars per acre more than anticipated,” said Randy Dickhut, senior vice president of real estate operations at Farmers National Company.
What is propelling the land market and will this current surge in prices continue?
Agricultural land prices have been fairly stable in the past several years despite the gyrations of the ag economy. Producer incomes were taking hits, but the land market took it in stride except for the hardest-hit areas or segments. The factors supporting the land market remained constant during this time, which included historically low interest rates, a lower supply of land for sale and adequate demand for good cropland about everywhere.

Oklahoma City's Central Location Helped Breed Association's Pivot Quickly When Denver Canceled, Says Shane Bedwell, American Hereford Association
|
Oklahoma City’s central location is one of several reasons’ cattle breed associations were able to quickly rally their members when the Denver National Western Stock Show canceled last fall.
Shane Bedwell, chief operating officer and director of breed improvement for the American Hereford Association, recently talked with yours truly and pointed out the benefits of having the replacement show here.
Bedwell is also on the board of directors for the Cattlemen’s Congress, Bedwell said.
It was a big honor to be a member of the board of directors for the Cattlemen’s Congress, Bedwell said.
He credited Tyler Norvell and the OYE staff for pulling the show together.
We had a vision and a need for the cattle industry to have this show, he said.
The location of Oklahoma City is central to a lot of folks and shows how tough and resilient the cattle industry is, Bedwell said.

AFBF President Zippy Duvall Recaps 2020 Challenges and Looks Ahead to Working Well with the Biden Administration in His Annual Convention Address
|
Instead of enjoying the San Diego weather this week- Farm Bureau members are having to engage with other Farm Bureau members virtually for their annual convention.
While it's an online meeting in 2021- some things are still the same- including the Sunday address of the National AFBF President- in this case, Zippy Duvall of Georgia, who has served as the organization's President since 2015.
Duvall bragged on the access that the organization has had with the Trump Administration- without actually mentioning the President by name.
He recounted Zoom meetings the group have had with Secretary Sonny Perdue as well as with the President himself- and also mentioned regulatory wins that have come because of the Administration's efforts. That includes replacing the Obama era WOTUS with a new Clean Water Act.
At the same- again without mentioning President Elect Joe Biden by name- Duvall says "Now, we’ve had a presidential election and in a few days we’ll have a new president and a new Congress that will be sworn in. Folks, let me assure you, it’s still our time. Farm Bureau has built strong, productive relationships with every administration, every Congress. And, we’re already building those relationships again to continue to be the strong, national voice of agriculture."
You can listen and read the full remarks delivered by Duvall on Sunday by clicking on the Button below.

Former House Ag Committee Chair Mike Conaway and Ronnie Anderson Receive Highest Farm Bureau Honors
|
The former Chairman of the House Ag Committee, Mike Conaway of Texas, is one of two honorees being presented with the Distinguished Service Award by the American Farm Bureau during their virtual convention going on this week .
Conaway was first elected to represent the 11th Congressional District of Texas in 2004. He served as chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture from 2015 to 2019 and as ranking member from 2019 to 2021. He also served on the House Armed Services Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, as well as Chairman of the House Committee on Ethics from 2013-2015. He was a deputy Republican whip, a position he held since the 112th Congress. After 16 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Conaway decided not to run for re-election.
“The people who work in production agriculture, and the people who work in oil and gas, are some of the most decent, honest, hardworking, patriotic Americans you could ever imagine,” said Conaway. “Going to work on their behalf every day was a real joy.”
“Chairman Conaway is a true leader for U.S. agriculture,” said Russell Boening, president of the Texas Farm Bureau. “His success in adding seed cotton back into the farm bill helped cotton growers in Texas and across the nation continue operating during difficult circumstances.”
Conaway chaired the U.S. House Agriculture Committee’s General Farm Commodities and Risk Management Subcommittee during the 113th Congress. In addition, as an important lieutenant to then-Chairman Frank Lucas, he played a major role in the passage of the 2014 farm bill, which benefited farmers and ranchers across the entire country.
