OSU's Amy Hagerman Explains Latest USDA Coronavirus Assistance Package
|
Producers curious or confused by the latest USDA coronavirus assistance package needn’t worry as Dr. Amy Hagerman, Assistant Professor in Agriculture and Food Policy at Oklahoma State University explained some of the detail in a recent interview with Radio Oklahoma Agriculture Network Associate Farm Director and Editor KC Sheperd.
This is using some of the funds passed in December as part of the coronavirus assistance package, Hagerman said.
Their target is to hit any of those producers who may have not been covered by previous plans, she said.
They have really streamlined it for producers, she said.
For cattle producers, they are going to use CFAP 1 applications completed last year and use those to issue new payments
For row crop producers it’s going to be a top off of $20 per acre for all of those producers under CFAP 2 application, she said.
This is good news for us in Oklahoma because all wheat classes are included in the $20 payment, Hagerman said.
Also included in this payment are crops without trigger prices, such as canola, she said.
For producers who have not filed an application, you haven’t missed the boat, she said.
The program has been reopened and extended from April 5 for at least two months.

Farm Bureau Opposes Proposals to Eliminate Stepped-Up Basis and Impose Capital Gains Taxes at Death
|
American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall today commented on the recent proposals by several lawmakers to tax unrealized capital gains at death and roll back the stepped-up basis on those capital gains.
“Taxing capital gains when a loved one passes away would have a devastating impact on farm and ranch families, even more so if the stepped-up basis tool is taken out of the toolbox. Stepped-up basis encourages families to grow their businesses and pass them on to another generation, and elimination could force those families to sell their farms just to pay the taxes.
“The value of many farms is tied up in land and equipment. Cash flow on most farms is much too small to pay large capital gains taxes. These taxes would cause further consolidation in agriculture with small farms more likely to be forced out of business by the tax liability.

Cloud of Uncertainty Hangs Over Meat Demand Going Into Spring Months
|
There remains some uncertainty in the meat demand picture going into the spring months said Katelyn McCullock, director and senior agricultural economist for the Livestock Marketing Information Center.
Will consumers and businesses return to pre-pandemic levels this year? Which hospitality or food service sector will recover first?
McCullock first examined the wholesale boxed beef sales which have been stronger in recent days.
I think the negotiated boxed beef is going to be volatile this year as we sort out and see the travel sector and food service coming back, she said.
I would expect that type of behavior throughout 2021 as we just don’t know how consumers are going to respond, McCullock said.
I think a lot of businesses are not going to travel again this year, she said.
I think it is going to take a little more time to get to a consistent level, she added.
On a related note, the recent quarterly hogs and pigs report is bullish and that means we’re going to have less pork than anticipated going into the middle part of 2021.

Mark Johnson on Selection for Growth and Carcass Merit
|
Mark Johnson, Oklahoma State University Extension Beef Cattle Breeding Specialist, offers herd health advice as part of the weekly series known as the "Cow Calf Corner" published electronically by Dr. Peel, Mark Johnson, and Paul Beck. today Johnson is talking about bull power for breeding season.
After considering what traits are most economically important to us in our own production and marketing system. Bull selection is critical to maximize the genetic potential of future calf crops to perform in those traits. This week we look specifically at the EPDs we should consider when improving growth and/or carcass merit are among our selection priorities. Selection pressure should be applied based on the intended marketing endpoint of our calf crop.
EPDs for Growth
Weaning Weight (WW) - expressed in pounds, a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny as compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight (YW) - expressed in pounds, a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny as compared to that of other sires.

A Year Into Lockdown, Research Finds Sharp Increase In Consumer Demand For Sustainable Products And Business Practices
|
A U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol survey of sustainability decision-makers at 1,000 brands and retailers in the United States and United Kingdom revealed a sharp increase in consumer demand for sustainable products and business practices.
Consumers around the world have adapted to social distancing measures and lockdowns over the last 12 months, with the way they dress, work, and shop changing dramatically. The U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol recently surveyed sustainability decision-makers at 1,000 brands and retailers in the U.S. and UK to determine the impact the pandemic has had on the importance of and investment in sustainability initiatives. As brands and retailers look to the future, there is a sense of optimism for increased consumer spending and investment in environmentally friendly practices – with 28% of brands and retailers committed to setting new industry standards for sustainability.
As the one year of many countries going into lockdown approaches, the Trust Protocol’s research findings reveal that 69% of brands and retailers believe that the pandemic has emphasized the importance of environmentally friendly products to customers – with two-thirds (61%) also noting that there has been an increased demand for sustainable products.

Where Premiums are Earned, Understanding Beef Carcass Value
|
A Choice carcass is worth more than Select, but if cattlemen are looking to add value across the entire carcass, only one brand does that.
Cattlemen joining a March webinar hosted by the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand learned about that and more while discovering the sources of premiums they earn for their best cattle.
For decades, those who aim to raise high-quality cattle have kept an eye on the Choice/Select spread. The CAB/Choice spread? That’s next level.
"The purpose of the brand is to add value to Angus cattle," said Paul Dykstra CAB assistant director of supply management and analysis, during a March webinar. "The $17.57-per-hundredweight (cwt.) premium over Choice is absolutely at the heart and soul of our very purpose and our mission statement."
Diana Clark, CAB meat scientist, co-hosted the webinar where the duo walked through market benchmarks, brand specifications and the value it adds across the entire carcass.
Last year, it all added up to a CAB wholesale premium value of $154.61 per head above Choice and more than $246 above Select.

Introducing Sara Howard of the Altus FFA Chapter, Your 2021 Southwest Area Star in Agriscience
|
During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the twenty Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization. The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Production Agriculture. This week, we begin that journey by telling you about the five area stars in Agribusiness for 2021. One Star Finalist featured in the coming days from each of the categories, will be named the State Star Award Winner during the 95th Oklahoma State FFA Convention coming up April 27, and 28th in Oklahoma City.
This week, our coverage of the 2021 Oklahoma FFA Star Award Finalists kicks off with Agriscience competitor Sara Howard, representing the Southwest Area for Area star in Agriscience from the Altus FFA chapter. Howard has been working with a PIM (raspberry pi imaging camera) to identify weed life in a field to help with chemical spraying, and fertilizer use." Howard said she got inspiration for this project from MIT Articles, and other agriculture experiments, "Those seemed really interesting to me and I wanted to see the results for myself."
Currently Howard is working on how to implement the technology in her family's machinery, and around the state, "The implementation process is slow right now because the software and technology is still being developed. But we use the facial recognition that you have on your phone and we feed it a ton of pictures of plants that we want it to identify. Then we cause it to know what those look like so when we feed it a video, or another picture, it can pick out which plants we want it to know. It can even identify cotton so it doesn't pick that up and cause it to be labeled as a harmful botanical pest." Howard is hopeful that going forward her project can help farmers save a lot of money
