Road to Rural Prosperity with OSU's Dr. Brett Carver-- On How the 2021 Wheat Crop has handled the Historic Freeze & Whats Coming up Next
|
Our latest Road to Rural Prosperity Podcast takes us to the Campus of Oklahoma State University where Host KC Sheperd sat down with Dr. Brett Carver, Regents Professor Wheat Genetics Chair in Agriculture, Wheat Breeding and Genetics in his office on the Oklahoma State University campus in Stillwater and talked about a variety of subjects- all relating back to his passion for breeding wheat.
He offered his take on how the 2021 wheat crop has handled the historic freeze the southern plains dealt with in February of this year, reviewed the wheat varieties that have come out of his program and looked ahead to what might be coming next.

Prospective Plantings Shows Corn, Soybean Acreage Below Expectations- No Surprises in Oklahoma
|
Corn acreage was pegged at 91.1 million acres, up just 325,000 acres from 2020 planting, less than a 1% increase from last year. USDA's acreage came in below the lowest average analyst estimate released by Dow Jones. USDA stated that compared to 2020, corn planting would be up or unchanged in 24 of 48 states.
Soybean acres also came in below the pre-report range at 87.6 ma when the average estimate expected 90 ma. Still, soybean acres are forecast to be 5% higher than last year, 4.5 ma higher. USDA stated planting acres would be higher or unchanged in 23 of 29 states.
In overall principal crops, USDA reported 316.2 ma would be planted, up 6.1 ma from 2020.
USDA pegged all wheat planted acreage for 2021 at 46.4 ma, up 5% from last year, but still the fourth-lowest all wheat planted area since recordkeeping began in 1919.
Of that, 33.1 ma are expected to be winter wheat, up 9% from last year and 3% above the agency's previous estimate. Hard red winter plantings should account for 23.2 ma, with soft red winter on 6.42 ma and white winter wheat on 3.48 ma
Looking at the Oklahoma numbers within the report-
Oklahoma's wheat farmers planted 4.3 million acres last fall- up one percent from the year earlier- our state is the 3rd largest winter wheat state by acreage in the US.
All Hay harvested in Oklahoma will be 2.7 million acres this season- off 3 percent from a year ago.
The 2021 cotton crop is expected to be planted on 510,000 acres- in line with the numbers predicted by state cotton specialist Dr. Seth Byrd and 3 percent under a year ago- Oklahoma continues to be the third largest cotton state by acreage.
Soybean acres are expected to be 550,000 acres in 2021- off 2 percent from a year ago and corn acres to be planted are expected to be 350,000 this year- off 3 percent from 2020.

Senate Legislation Establishing Percentage of Cash Versus Negotiated Cattle Trade Examined by NCBA's Ethan Lane
|
Legislation by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) to increase competition and transparency among packers is continuing to attract attention from the cattle industry said Ethan Lane, NCBA vice president of government affairs.
This is a bill we have been opposed to in the past, Lane said.
It really has to do with how much negotiated trade you’re seeing in different parts of the country, Lane said.
If you’re in an area where they are already trading 50 percent of their cattle on cash, this bill fits, but in Texas or Kansas, it is out of step with the volume of cash cattle trade, Lane said.
A lot of this conversation has centered on regional differences, Lane said.
The academic and economic community tells us to be more specific to the region, Lane said.
NCBA remains opposed to this bill at this current time.
Interestingly, Sen. Cory Booker D-NJ), urban legislator, vegan and new member of the Senate Ag Committee, has signed on with the bill.
Sen. Booker is not a guy that is interested in keeping the cattle industry viable, Lane said.

Governor Stitt Signs Education and Student Transfer Reforms Into Law
|
Governor Kevin Stitt signed what he has called the "most transformative education reform legislation in Oklahoma history into law today in a ceremony in the Blue Room at the Capitol."
House Bill 2078 and Senate Bill 783 allow for students to attend public schools that best meet their needs and modernize the funding formula to match enrollment counts more accurately.
Just ahead of the signing ceremony- I talked with the lead author in the House on HB 2078- Kyle Hilbert- and you can hear our conversation with Rep. Hilbert and read more on both measures by clicking on the button below.

Oklahoma Cattlemen Invest in Oklahoma's Agricultural Youth
|
The Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association has served as the Trusted Voice of Oklahoma cattle producers since 1953. The organization has long-standing values that serving today’s beef producers goes hand-in-hand with supporting Oklahoma’s agricultural youth, specifically young people interested in beef production.
2021 marks the sixth year that the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association has coordinated the steer and heifer futurity sales and showback at the Oklahoma Youth Expo (OYE). Almost 40 heifers and 40 steers were sold through the 2021 futurity sales during OYE.
“These sales provide students an opportunity to purchase an animal for their next show,” said Tiffani Pruitt, Futurity Sale Coordinator. “The OCA proudly coordinates the sales because it provides us with an opportunity to further support young cattlemen at OYE. We invest the net income from the futurity sales right back into agricultural youth through purchases and add-ons at the OYE Sale of Champions.”
OCA invested about $20,000.00 at the OYE Sale of Champions. And that is just how the organization views it - an investment.
“Supporting, encouraging and investing in our youth helps keep the next generation rooted in agriculture and is vitally important to our association and industry,” Pruitt said.

BASF launches new Digital tool to Calculate crop Protection Value
|
BASF has launched a new digital tool, as part of its Grow Smart Live app, that calculates the estimated value of a farmer’s crop protection investment. The Grow Smart Advantage tool uses information about the farmer’s operation to provide crop input recommendations as well as the estimated value of those recommendations versus alternative options that are driven by rebates.
When a user opens the tool, they are asked to input their state followed by specifics around the crop(s), acreage and inputs. The user is then asked to select the strength of the weed control and plant health program they need. Based on this information, the Grow Smart Advantage tool calculates the estimated performance results and dollar value of BASF products versus competitive products and rebates. These results provide users with a transparent cost overview of rebate programs using public data derived from independent third parties.
“This new tool really puts what is best for farmers at the forefront in regard to their crop protection inputs and yield results,” said Nick Fassler, Technical Services Director for BASF Agricultural Solutions. “By providing sound agronomic recommendations, the Grow Smart Advantage tool is another example of how BASF continues to invest in digital tools that provide farmers with innovative ways to manage their operations and protect their investment.”

Growth Energy and American Farm Bureau Federation Urge Supreme Court to Uphold Ruling Against Demand Destruction
|
Growth Energy and the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court case HollyFrontier Cheyenne Refining, LLC, et al., v. Renewable Fuels Association, et al. The joint brief defends a lower court’s ruling, which vacated refinery exemptions improperly granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Following the brief filing, Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor released the following statement:
“The outcome of this case before the Supreme Court will be a pivotal moment for the biofuels industry and the integrity of the Renewable Fuel Standard,” said Skor. “We are proud to provide additional support to the respondents, and to address two additional and critical considerations to the court: agency deference and the importance of providing a remedy for the billions of gallons of biofuel demand destroyed by unlawful exemptions. We urge the Supreme Court to affirm the 10th Circuit decision, reject attempts by a handful of oil refiners to avoid blending obligations, and ensure the integrity of the RFS is upheld nationwide.”
Growth Energy and AFBF’s brief outlines three main arguments. First, that the EPA’s interpretation of the small refinery exemption (SRE) eligibility provisions of the RFS is not entitled to deference on several grounds, not least of which are that it was not made in the exercise of EPA’s lawmaking authority and, in any case, no longer reflects EPA’s considered position.

Introducing Abby Cardwell of the Deer Creek Lamont FFA Chapter, Your 2021 Northwest Area Star in Agriscience
|
During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the twenty Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization.
The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Production Agriculture.
This week, we spotlight the five area stars in Agribusiness for 2021.
One Star Finalist featured in the coming days from each of the categories, will be named the State Star Award Winner during the 95th Oklahoma State FFA Convention coming up April 27, and 28th in Oklahoma City.
This week, our coverage of the 2021 Oklahoma FFA Star Award Finalists continues with Agriscience competitor Abby Cardwell representing the Northwest Area from the Deer Creek Lamont FFA chapter.
Cardwell has been working with the Northern Oklahoma College Sheep Center on embryo transfer research the past several years.
For Cardwell, this is a family affair, growing up around the NOC facility as her dad is Sheep Center herd manager.
“I watched this for a couple of years and I really wanted to be involved in it,” she said.
The research project has been a learning experience for Cardwell.
“It taught me that it is nature and you can’t control everything,” she said.
“I really like collecting the embryos and looking at them through the microscope as I like science,” she said.
Her growth in FFA has been fostered by her love for science.
