OSU's Kim Anderson Says the Price of Wheat Continues to Go Down
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks about what is going on in the Wheat Markets. Dr. Anderson says right now the world has too much wheat. This week Dr. Anderson is talking about the latest crop prices.
Anderson says wheat prices continue to go down, "Corn prices are moving sideways, soybeans, Just a slight uptrend there. You look at new crop Wheat prices, $5.50 That's $1 lower than they were about six weeks ago. You've got corn forward contract price or harvest delivery of $4.70, thats just level or about the same as it was in late March- early April.
Then You've got soybeans at $12, only about 6 cents above what it was a couple of weeks ago. So sideways movement for the two majors, corn and soybeans and down for the wheat." To hear more from Dr. Anderson, click or tap below.

Arkansas Beef Producer Explains How Wal Mart Improved Its Meat Counter Reputation
|
It’s an interesting story to learn how Wal Mart became the largest beef retailer in the world and Lamar Steiger, a cow/calf operator from northwest Arkansas, relates that story on today’s Beef Buzz.
Steiger is an advisor for Wal Mart and was a speaker at a recent Boehringer Ingelheim webinar on the cow/calf producer and their role in producing high quality beef for the consumer.
This idea that Wal Mart had to do something big and different with beef was driven by their initial bad reputation at the meat counter from the time they started their grocery business, Steiger said.
Their rapid growth meant they were focused on just getting the product on the shelf, Steiger said.
Today they are the largest beef retailer in the world with stores in urban neighborhoods as well as rural areas.
They rapidly improved their meat counter by hiring meat science graduates from well known universities such as Texas A & M.
They were trained in the Wal Mart culture and told to improve the beef business, he said.
These young men and women never dreamed they would be buying meat instead of being in the processing side, Steiger said.

Drought Concerns Enhanced For Much of The Country, Including Oklahoma, in Latest NOAA Drought Monitor Update
|
Temperatures exceeded normal numbers across much of the West and High Plains this past week according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor update.
High temperatures in Nebraska and the Dakotas reached the upper 70’s to mid-80’s during the period. The warm temperatures combined with low relative humidity and gusty winds increased wildfire activity and the concerns for expanding drought.
Severe (D2) and extreme (D3) drought expanded in both North and South Dakota.
In North Dakota, we’re hearing reports that producers are starting to de-stock livestock herd by culling cows and grain farmers are very concerned about the lack of moisture.
In Oklahoma, the updated drought map shows broad expansions of DO and D1 (moderate drought).
Warm, dry weather combined with high winds increased evaporative demand, drying out soils and vegetation.
The only improvements occurred in the Texas Panhandle and western Oklahoma.

Support local food Companies in April With Made in Oklahoma
|
April is Made in Oklahoma Month, and the Oklahoma State University Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center is encouraging Oklahomans to support local food companies.
Andrea Graves, FAPC business planning and marketing specialist, said it is more important now than ever to support local food businesses.
“Many local food companies have felt financial strain during the past year and are concerned about what the future holds,” Graves said. “Local businesses are essential for our economy by bringing growth and innovation to our communities, providing employment and creating entrepreneurship opportunities.”
Graves recommends the following five ways to support local food companies and celebrate Made in Oklahoma Month.
1. Order from or visit your favorite restaurant once per week.
2. Browse small businesses’ websites and order online for their products.
3. Buy gift cards or credit to use later.
4. Share a local food company’s website on social media, as well as restaurant menus.
5. Give a donation; cash is always appreciated.

ONG is Promoting April as National Safe Digging Month With $100 Gift Card Opportunity
|
April is National Safe Digging Month and Cherokee Ballard, public relations manager at Oklahoma Natural Gas, is encouraging everyone to “call before you dig.”
ONG is promoting awareness about safe digging practices by offering customers a chance to win a $100 gift card if they take an interactive quiz.
Ballard talked about the promotion during an interview with Radio Oklahoma Agriculture Network Associate Farm Director and Editor KC Sheperd.
We try to push the “Call before you dig” year around but it is especially important this spring, Ballard said.
“Right now, so many Oklahomans are assessing landscaping after the ice storm in October and the snowstorm in February and are ready to start replacing damaged shrubs and trees,” Ballard said.
We are encouraging people to make this free call, simply dial 811, she said.
Before you do any digging, yourself or by a contractor, make that phone call, she said.
“It just takes one wrong swing of a shovel or a scoop from a backhoe to create an outage issue for an entire neighborhood – so before you start digging for new shrubs and trees make a quick call to 811 to prevent damage.”
There could be electrical, internet, gas lines, anything can be damaged.
It happens and people just don’t realize it, she said.
