OSU Scientists Make Wheat Gene Discovery
|
A gene discovery in a wheat variety developed at Oklahoma State University could mean larger yields for Oklahoma wheat producers, researchers said.
After more than a decade of research, Liuling Yan the Dillon and Lois Hodges professor of wheat molecular genetics and breeding in OSU’s Department of Plant and Soil Sciences has discovered and cloned the TaOGT1 gene in the popular Billings wheat variety.
The full study on this topic is available online It was recently highlighted by the editors at the online magazine, Nature Communications.
“Imagine spending 10 long years looking for one final piece to a puzzle, but in this case, the puzzle is made from genes in wheat,” said Brett Carver, regents professor and holder of the Wheat Genetics Chair in Agriculture.
This newly discovered missing link will enable wheat researchers to fine-tune crop maturity for a specific use: cattle grazing, grain-only or short-season wheat. Carver said without this fourth genetic piece, the other three pieces were not clear.

NCBA Stands Ready to Fight for Sound Tax Policy
|
In his American Families Plan, President Biden targets several provisions of the tax code to raise approximately $1.5 trillion in revenue over the next 10 years. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) has long advocated for sound tax policy for rural America.
"Family-owned cattle operations, no matter the size, are the backbone and economic drivers of rural economies across the U.S. Preserving long-standing tax provisions such as stepped-up basis and like-kind exchanges is critical when considering the financial viability of farms and ranches, as well as the ability for the next generation of producers to carry on the family business and conserve the land that has been in their family for generations," said Danielle Beck, NCBA Senior Executive Director of Government Affairs.
The American Families Plan would repeal the deferral of gain for real estate like-kind exchanges for gains greater than $500,000 and eliminate stepped-up basis for gains in excess of $1 million ($2.5 million per couple “when combined with existing real estate exemptions”) and tax said gains on any property not donated to charity. According to the plan, the reform will be designed “with protections so that family-owned businesses and farms will not have to pay taxes when given to heirs who continue to run the business.”

Dr. Kim Anderson Says this has been a Good Week For Higher Grain Prices
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks about what is going on in the Wheat Markets weekly on SUNUP.
This week Dr. Anderson says grain prices just keep going up, "You look at the last week you've had wheat prices go up about 75 cents. Cash Oklahoma prices from around $6.25t to almost $7. Corn prices from about $5.20 to $5.50, somewhere in the vicinity. The sorghum from $6.00 to $6.30, Soybeans from $12.40 to $12.75. Cotton from $84.41 to $87.02, all the commodities are just going up big time"
Anderson said there is some rumblings in the market that prices are as high as they should be, "You know that's what the analysts are saying, 'how high can these prices go?' and some of them say that if you look at the supply and demand situation, they're as high as they should be. But when the market gets moving, when the momentum gets there, you just don't know how high they're going. Plus, there's a lot of a lot of things going on in the market right now." Regenerative Ranching Program at Noble Research Institute Focused on Five Research Areas
|
As the Noble Research Institute moves towards establishing a successful regenerative ranching program, Hugh Aljoe, director of producer relations for the Noble Research Institute, said they are focusing on five main areas.
Aljoe said they started the process more than a year ago to emphasize rebuilding the soil and are returning to some of the basics intended by their founder Lloyd Noble.
The game plan for regenerative agriculture is to focus on five research areas, Aljoe said.
One is called the metrics, managing and monitoring, he said.
We have another on the transition for producers considering moving into regenerative, he said.
Livestock adaptability and wildlife in relation to regenerative grazing is also an important research focus, he said.
There is even one area focused on growing pecans with grazing livestock.
Once we begin to get a picture of what the research and early results are as we work with producers who are already doing this successfully, then we can begin to build educational content for producers, Aljoe said.
Improving the soil and the grasslands is important but the Noble researcher said one area every producer is concerned about is the economics of regenerative agriculture.

Ag Groups Respond to Biden's Joint Session Speech
|
President Joseph Biden delivered his remarks before a Joint Session of Congress. NAWG CEO Chandler Goule provided the following statement in response:
“While the President addressed many issues of importance to the American people, we are eager to hear more about agricultural-related policies, specifically how we can improve farm program delivery and advance a trade agenda that ensures a level playing field for wheat growers. However, what our farmers saw in President Biden’s American Families Plan earlier today includes changes in the stepped-up basis, which raised a lot of questions in wheat country.
“We understand the American Families Plan’s goal is to target the ultra-wealthy and corporations who are able to evade taxes. However, farmers have several concerns about how changes to stepped-up basis and higher capital gains taxes on inherited assets could negatively impact families looking to pass along the farm to the next generation. Although the President’s plan says these reforms will be designed with protection in mind for family-owned businesses and farms, we want more details about how this would be achieved.
A longtime advocate of strengthening the nutrition safety net, National Farmers Union (NFU) was heartened by the president’s attention to food insecurity, especially in light of the added challenges caused by the pandemic. “Though the issue of hunger has received a lot of attention over the past year, it certainly isn’t a new problem, and it won’t just disappear when the pandemic ends,” said NFU President Rob Larew. “Fortunately, we already have a safety net to catch families when money is tight – but it isn’t strong or wide enough to support everyone who needs help. President Biden’s bid to expand free school meals and summer EBT is an important step towards reinforcing our existing system so that it can accommodate all Americans experiencing food insecurity.”

Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off is Back and Better Than Ever
|
Calling all chefs, grill masters and beef lovers — the famous American Angus Auxiliary-sponsored All-American Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off is back and better than ever! In addition to the annual Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off contest and the Certified Angus Beef® Chef’s Challenge, there will be a third division, the Certified Angus Beef at Home contest. The All-American Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off and the Certified Angus Beef® Chef’s Challenge are to be hosted on July 13, 2021, in conjunction with the Grandest Show at the 2021 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS).
The purpose of all three of these contests is a chance to display participants’ knowledge of the beef industry and cooking skills in an educational, competitive and fun way. Among junior teams in particular, the Cook-Off has fostered a cooperative spirit. The Cook-Off is an excellent way to educate and entertain nonparticipants, while promoting the ultimate end product — the Certified Angus Beef® brand.
“We are so excited to be back in action this year with our annual contests, as well as the Certified Angus Beef® at Home challenge for round two,” said Anne Lampe, American Angus Auxiliary Beef Education Committee co-chair. “The Cook-Off is a favorite contest at the NJAS, and we can’t wait to see the competitive spirit exhibitors bring this year to Grand Island!”
