Oklahoma Wheat Harvest 35 to 40% Complete According to Oklahoma Wheat Commission's Mike Schulte
|
Oklahoma Wheat Country is harvesting from the OK/Texas border all the way up to the OK/Kansas border and is around 35-40% Complete. Pop up storms have hindered some areas but it is full speed ahead. I spoke with Oklahoma Wheat Commission's Mike Shulte to get the latest update.
Wheat harvest continues to make great progress in Southern and Central Oklahoma. Producers along the 412 Hwy corridor, in Northern Oklahoma, are just getting a good start. Custom harvesting crews are trying to finalize cuttings in Southern and Central Oklahoma and this has impacted some producers getting fields harvested in Northern regions, but with the open weather that most likely is going to change in the next couple days. Overall crop quality continues to be favorable with test weight and yield reports. Statewide nothing has been reported below 60 lbs./bu., until today and we are seeing some lower test weights being reported east of Enid and in regions North of Blackwell and Braman on the I-35 corridor. Yields in most all regions have been favorable ranging from the mid 30’s to mid 60’s depending on variety, location and management plans. Some producers with intensive management programs are reporting yields in the mid 70’s to mid 80’s in parts of Northern, Oklahoma.

Glynn Tonsor’s May Meat Demand Monitor Shows Increases in Meat Demand
|
Meat demand for May 2021 has strongly increased across the board when compared to the previous month and continues to rise.
Glynn Tonsor first shared the May 2021 MDM report showed the demand for meat rose in both the retail and food service meat sectors.
Additionally, the report showed that taste, freshness, safety, and price remain the most important to consumers when purchasing protein.
Tonsor commented he has been able to tweak the MDM survey over time, which resulted in him recently adding four additional questions for respondents to answer related to food price inflation.
One question asks respondents to answer what they expect food prices to do the following month: Increase, decrease, or stay consistent. This question is asked for four meat products including ground beef, choice sirloin steak, a bacon product, and a boneless pork chop product, Tonsor said.
In the May 2021 MDM report, Tonsor said consumers have been expecting all four of the products to increase in price, and the magnitude of the price increases have been rising.

USDA Reminds Producers to File Crop Acreage Reports
|
Agricultural producers who have not yet completed their crop acreage reports after planting should make an appointment with their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office before the applicable deadline. July 15 is a major deadline for most crops, but acreage reporting deadlines vary by county and by crop.
“USDA offers a lot of programs to assist producers, but in order to receive many of these program benefits, you must file an accurate crop acreage report,” said FSA Administrator Zach Ducheneaux. “Once planting is complete, call your local FSA county office to make an appointment.”
An acreage report documents a crop grown on a farm or ranch and its intended uses. Filing an accurate and timely acreage report for all crops and land uses, including failed acreage and prevented planted acreage, can prevent the loss of benefits.

Wheat Organizations Welcome End to U.S.-EU Aircraft Trade Dispute
|
U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) and the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) congratulate the Biden Administration and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai for resolving the long-running World Trade Organization dispute over aircraft subsidies and suspending retaliatory tariffs that were a barrier to U.S. wheat exports to the European Union.
Under the dispute, the EU placed retaliatory tariffs on non-durum U.S. wheat, which effectively blocked average annual imports of more than 538,000 metric tons of mainly U.S. hard red spring and some hard red winter wheat. Three months ago, the United States and the EU agreed to temporarily suspend all retaliatory tariffs and imports resumed almost immediately.
The agreement announced this week suspends the retaliatory tariffs for five years, pending how negotiations on aircraft subsidies go.

Sponsor Spotlight
Union Mutual was chartered in 1938 to write property and casualty insurance in the state of Oklahoma. Over the years, Union Mutual has maintained the attitude that started the company and continue to be that company that understands Oklahomans’ insurance needs when they contact any member of the UMIC team.
In poor economic times, in times when national insurance companies either stopped writing or completely left the state, Union Mutual has been there for Oklahomans. Today, Union Mutual writes insurance in all 77 counties of Oklahoma through almost 300 agency locations. These agents provide prompt and reliable quotes for most lines of insurance. Just recently, UMIC launched a new product in the preferred market space that has seen unprecedented growth with our rural customer base and falls in line with our Company mantra of “Protection not Politics”, when meeting the needs of our consumers and agents.
Monica Collison took over as CEO of Union Mutual in May of 2019. Under her leadership and through the hard work of her Union team, the company has continued to see positive results and productive growth with profit throughout the state of Oklahoma. Union Mutual offers a wide variety of coverage options for Oklahomans. For 82 years, Union Mutual has led the way to protect all of Oklahoma.

NCBA Delivers Progress on Backend 150 Air-Mile Exemption for Livestock Haulers
|
Today, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) delivered progress on much-needed regulatory flexibility for livestock haulers. The addition of the backend 150 air-mile exemption from hours-of-service (HOS), crucial language pulled from the HAULS Act, was agreed to by Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE), Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), Committee Chair Maria Cantwell (D-WA), and Ranking Member Roger Wicker (R-MS) in the Senate Commerce Committee and adopted into the larger Surface Transportation Investment Act of 2021 by a bipartisan vote.
NCBA spearheaded introduction of the larger HAULS Act in both the Senate and House this spring, and worked hard to get the backend 150 air-mile exemption included in the Surface Transportation Investment Act that will be sent to the Senate floor.
"When one-size-fits-all government regulations fail to account for expertise on the ground, livestock haulers are put in the impossible position of either complying with regulations or doing what they know is best for the humane and safe transportation of live animals," said NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs Allison Rivera. "We strongly support this bipartisan, commonsense effort to give livestock haulers the flexibility they need to maintain the highest level of safety for drivers on the roads, transport livestock humanely, and ensure grocery stores remain stocked with beef."

FAPC Leaders Remain Optimistic In Food Industry
|
The Industry Advisory Committee of Oklahoma State University’s Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center recently met to learn more about faculty research and to discuss how the advisory board can contribute to the needs of the center.
“The committee members bring real-world knowledge and experience oversight,” said Roy Escoubas, FAPC director. “They continue to be strongly supportive of FAPC and engaged with the Oklahoma food industry, which is why I am so very pleased to have them advising us.”
The advisory board, representing food and agricultural leaders around the state, met in-person June 3 at the OSU Stillwater campus. While meeting with faculty and staff, the advisory board learned of updates on the facility and ongoing faculty research projects.
During the meeting, the committee elected new officers for 2021-2022. Tom Kramer of Kramer Consulting Company in Durant will serve as chairman. Erica Hering of Ralph’s Packing Company in Perkins will serve as vice chairman. Mark Vaughan of Fresh Avenue Partners in Oklahoma City will serve as secretary.

Cole, Lucas, Inhofe, Lankford Applaud OU Being Named Host of New Severe Weather Research Institute
|
Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Jim Inhofe (R-OK) and Representatives Frank Lucas (R-OK-03) and Tom Cole (R-OK-04) applauded the announcement the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) made selecting the University of Oklahoma to host NOAA’s Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CISHIWRO).
The mission of this cooperative institute is to promote collaborative research with NOAA on research to improve the understanding of severe and high-impact weather and to help produce better forecasts and warnings that save lives and property.
“OU continues to receive national recognition for their work in early detection, tracking, forecasting, and research in high-risk weather,” said Lankford. “The work of OU’s students and faculty has led to numerous breakthroughs that have protected and saved countless lives. Their selection to host this Cooperative Institute with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will build on their already stellar reputation as a research university and help ensure Oklahoma continues to mold the nation’s and the world’s next generation of leaders in weather-related sciences and engineering.”
The selection comes with an award of up to $208 million over the course of five years, with the potential for renewal for another five years based on successful performance. NOAA selected the University of Oklahoma after an open, competitive evaluation.

USDA Opens Signup for CLEAR30, Expands Pilot to Be Nationwide
|
Landowners and agricultural producers currently enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) now have a wider opportunity to enroll in a 30-year contract through the Clean Lakes, Estuaries, And Rivers initiative, called CLEAR30. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expanding CLEAR30 – a water-quality focused option available through CRP – to be nationwide now.
Interested producers with CRP contracts expiring September 30, 2021, should sign up by August 6, 2021. CLEAR30 provides an opportunity for producers to receive incentives for a 30-year commitment to water quality practices on their CRP land, building on their original 10- to 15-year CRP contracts.
“We are excited to expand this option to enable more producers to take their conservation efforts to the next level,” said Zach Ducheneaux, USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) administrator. “Offering CLEAR30 in all states enables durable maintenance of conservation investments and enhanced stewardship of the land and waterways on a larger scale.”
These long-term contracts ensure that practices remain in place for 30 years, which improves water quality through reducing sediment and nutrient runoff and helping prevent algal blooms.

The Road to Rural Prosperity will dive into these stories each week, bringing you insight into the great things happening in and to rural Oklahoma. We will bring you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
Oklahoma Farm Bureau Senior Director for Public Policy Steve Thompson talked with Ron Hays about 2021 Oklahoma Legislative Session in the latest Road to Rural Prosperity. Steve believes "this may have been the best legislative year that I've been a part of- and I've been working on these things in a variety of ways for twenty plus years." He says that the agricultural interests at the Capitol played both offense and defense during the four months that the lawmakers were in session- and cites significant wins in the Ag Sales Tax Exemption and property tax areas that highlighted the 2021 portion of the 57th Legislature.
