Michael Kelsey Says Members Set to Discuss Cattle Market Transparency and McGirt at OCA Convention
|
OCA Executive Vice President, Michael Kelsey, said the leadership of the organization have been hard at work planning for the July 23-24 OCA Convention discussion of issues he believes will mirror those considered at the NCBA Convention in August.
Kelsey said he specifically anticipates there will be a conversation of live cattle cash trade and its negotiation.
This past May, three task forces were appointed by the organization. The task forces were to focus on the cattle marker transparency question, the response of the Cattle Industry to the McGirt Supreme Court Ruling and the problems being cause in rural Oklahoma by the explosive growth of marijuana production in parts of Oklahoma.
On that first topic, Kelsey believes that the recommendations from the Task Force will be a starting point that will help OCA’s viewpoint be heard in Nashville next month.
On the second issue that has been considered by a Task Force, he believes there will also be a robust discussion regarding the McGirt v. Oklahoma Supreme Court ruling, Kelsey said.

Following Court Decision, U.S. House Moves to Ensure E15 Year-Round
|
Today, the bipartisan Year-Round Fuel Choice Act was introduced by Representatives Angie Craig (D-Minn.) and Adrian Smith (R-Neb.) to ensure the continued availability of low-carbon fifteen percent ethanol fuel blends (E15) in all fuel markets year-round.
On July 2, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated a 2019 rule by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that lifted outdated restrictions on the summertime sale of E15, a cleaner burning fuel approved for 95% of cars on the road. This legislation would permanently extend the 1.0 psi summertime Reid vapor pressure (RVP) waiver to ethanol blends beyond E10, thus eliminating any seasonal restrictions on sales.
“We’re grateful our congressional champions acted swiftly on behalf of farmers, biofuel producers, and drivers nationwide to introduce the Year-Round Fuel Choice Act,” said CEO Emily Skor. “The Year-Round Fuel Choice Act would make permanent the RVP waiver for summertime use of higher blends of biofuels, ensuring consumers have year-round access to a lower-carbon, lower-emission renewable fuel that saves money at the pump."

2021 Oklahoma Junior Wheat Show's Call for Entries- Bring Your Samples to Stillwater
|
As we progress through the summer, we near the date for the annual Oklahoma Wheat Commission’s Junior Wheat Show.
I spoke with Mike Schulte, executive director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, and he said the visual part of the competition is set for Tuesday July 20 at the Payne County Fairgrounds.
Samples will be accepted starting at 8 a.m., and they will stop being taken at 8:30 a.m., Schulte said.
Judging will begin thereafter with the 4-H and FFA divisions, which usually takes a couple of hours, he said.
If participants wish to enter and submit their 10-pound sample from the wheat varieties they planted this year, they need to arrive between 7:30 to 7:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, Schulte said.
He added samples can also be mailed and should be done so by the Thursday July 15 so they arrive in time for the competition.
“This is going to be a wonderful opportunity, even for students in southwest and central Oklahoma who might go through harsher environments than typically seen in northern Oklahoma,” Schulte said. “This could be their year due to the really good functionality qualities seen in the analytical tests.”

TSCRA Editorial: Rural America Needs Sound, Predictable Tax Policy
|
They say that nothing is certain in life except death and taxes. While those two certainties are undeniable, we need to make sure that family-owned businesses, including farms and ranches, aren’t taxed to death.
Texas boasts more than 248,000 farming and ranching operations, 98% of which are family-owned. These operations, along with the other family-owned suppliers and service providers in the agricultural supply chain, are the backbone of our rural economy. They also contribute approximately $215.53 billion to Texas’ economy each year.
Preparing to pass the ranch to the next generation is a complicated process. We not only have to keep our operation financially viable now, but also must go through a cumbersome and expensive estate planning process because of the burdensome taxes incurred when we die or transfer our property to heirs.
There are more than 370 million acres expected to change hands in the next two decades. If we are to ensure that the next generation can build upon our hard work and dedication, Congress must prioritize common-sense tax policy for rural America and preserve long-standing tax provisions which allow family-owned businesses to survive.

Vegan Senator Cory Booker Introduces Legislation to Regulate Livestock Production and Meat Labeling
|
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association calls a bill introduced by Senator Cory Booker misguided. The Farm System Reform Act, reintroduced Wednesday by the New Jersey Democrat, would place a moratorium on concentrated animal feeding operations, known as CAFOs. Specifically, the legislation would place an immediate moratorium on new and expanding large CAFOs, and phase out by 2040 the largest CAFOs as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency. The bill would also restore mandatory country-of-origin labeling requirements for beef and pork and expand to dairy products.
NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane states the legislation "is the kind of broad, jumbled mess you get when you're more focused on Twitter and talking points than the sound legislating rural Americans need." Specific to feedyards, Lane adds, “As our food supply chain is taxed by a growing number of mouths to feed at home and abroad, this efficient production system will be more vital than ever.”
