U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack Discusses Broadband and Other Current Issues
|
With several agricultural issues up for discussion, rural broadband is one that makes it way to the top and affects all rural citizens.
I spoke with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack on Tuesday morning, who said money is being allocated with hopes of improving this issue.
Vilsack said the private sector cannot solely improve broadband in rural areas and communities, it will take government intervention and support.
What is currently being considered by a bipartisan group of senators is a plan that would provide sufficient resources to able to expand broadband to all four corners of the country, especially those rural and remote areas, Vilsack said.
This would allow all people access to important technology, he added.

Secretary of Ag Blayne Arthur & Governor Kevin Stitt On a Trade Mission to Azerbaijan
|
Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture Blayne Arthur, and Governor Kevin Stitt, along with other cabinet officials traveled nearly 7,000 miles to a trade mission in Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijani government has interest in diversifying the agriculture industry to include implementing new technology, genetics and technical assistance – all of which can be provided by Oklahoma companies and research institutions. In 2019, Oklahoma hosted an Azerbaijani delegation, including the Minister of Agriculture, Inam Karimov.
Sec. Arthur’s tour has so far included a visit to the Azersun Agropark in Hajigabul, which includes a 3,500 head dairy operation. She toured the facility with Minister Karimov, as well as Azersun Board Member, Savas Ugandan.

Derrell Peel Says Latest USDA Cattle On Feed Report Foretells Tighter Supplies
|
Issued last Friday by the USDA, the quarterly cattle on feed report is significant, according to OSU Professor and Livestock Marketing Extension Specialist, Derrell Peel.
The report suggests we are tightening our supplies, which could change the leverage equation, Peel said.
This year, the story has been absolute numbers, Peel said. The first half of the year revealed we had too many cattle to get through packing plants in a timely manner, and we are currently working through those numbers, he added.
The reported stated cattle on feed is 98.7 percent of last year, down 1.3 percent. Placements were down 7.1 percent compared to a year ago.
Peel commented the placement numbers are a result of the odd patterns and bizarre volatility experienced last year because of the world pandemic.

MyPlate Launches USDA’s First Alexa Skill
|
Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the launch of its first ever Alexa skill, a digital tool for parents and caregivers of infants and toddlers between four and 24 months old. Families who use the MyPlate Alexa skill receive nutrition information on what and how to feed their child based on their age.
“The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to building back better by developing a more resilient federal nutrition safety net that not only ensures all Americans have food to eat but also access to nutritious diet that meets their individual needs,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "USDA’s MyPlate Alexa skill leverages technology to meet American families where they are and foster healthy eating habits from an early age.”
The MyPlate Alexa skill is the latest addition to MyPlate’s extensive suite of resources aimed at helping Americans achieve a healthy, attainable diet that fits their individual lifestyle and budget. The new Alexa skill helps parents and caregivers introduce simple, tasty, and nutritious foods while helping to establish healthy eating habits starting at a young age. It is accessible to all Alexa device owners and iOS and Android users who download the free Alexa app.

House Ag Committee Advances Disaster Aid Bill for 2020 and 2021
|
Today, the House Agriculture Committee advanced the 2020 WHIP+ Reauthorization Act (H.R. 267), which would provide authorization for the Wildfire and Hurricane Indemnity Program Plus (WHIP+) in 2020 and 2021. This legislation would broaden the assistance available via WHIP+ and authorize $8.5 billion in disaster aid for eligible causes of loss.
“NAWG is pleased to see the House Agriculture Committee working in a bipartisan fashion to deliver much-needed assistance to growers impacted by natural disasters,” said NAWG CEO Chandler Goule. “Currently, wheat growers in the upper plains and across the western United States are experiencing an unprecedented drought. This legislation makes meaningful improvements to WHIP+, particularly in the trigger for drought assistance, excessive heat, and freeze. As Congress continues to work to get needed support to growers, NAWG will continue to work with our states, legislators, and USDA to enhance WHIP+ and challenges associated with the Quality Loss Adjustment program.”

Ninth Circuit Court in San Francisco Affirms Legality of Beef Checkoff- Dismissing Claims of R-CALF
|
In a court case that was originally filed in 2016, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco affirmed the U.S. Department of Agriculture's summary judgment win against R-Calf USA challenging assessments on cattle sales that fund industry groups' pro-beef consumption advertisements, holding in a published opinion Tuesday the advertisements are government speech exempt from First Amendment scrutiny.
In their opinion Tuesday, the panel affirmed a lower court's grant of summary judgment to the USDA, rejecting a challenge by the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund United Stockgrowers of America, or R-CALF USA, to the Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985 - which imposes a $1 mandatory assessment or a "checkoff" on each head of cattle sold in the U.S. to fund beef consumption promotional activities.
In 2020, a federal court ruled that the qualified state beef checkoff (QSBC) programs operating under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the UDSA do not violate the First Amendment and dismissed the lawsuit brought by R-CALF.
The agreements with qualified state beef councils, include Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

OSU's Justin Talley on Anaplasmosis: People, Ticks, and Certain Flies
|
Anaplasmosis is a common disease in cattle and Oklahoma is considered an endemic state. This means that anaplasmosis will occur every year within Oklahoma with some variation on the intensity of this disease usually based on the strain of Anaplasma marginale.
A marginale is a bacteria that infects red blood cells and once an animal becomes infected they are infected for life. This bacteria does not harm the red blood cells directly but the cow’s immune response recognizes it when it reaches certain levels which then causes anemia due to the immune system killing the red blood cells that are infected. This will limit the amount of oxygen that is transported throughout the animal’s blood, which can then lead to aggressive behaviors exhibited by normally docile cows or bulls.
Other clinical signs that animals are infected with the bacteria are extreme lethargy, yellowing of the mucous membranes, abortions, weight loss, and difficulty breathing. Most producers will not know they have an anaplasmosis problem until they see dead cows or bulls that are older than 2-years of age. This is why this disease can be so devastating because it targets some of the older stock in the herd, which have significant investment towards these animals.

Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma Wraps Up 16th Annual YBS Trip in Washington D.C.
|
On July 18, the Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma team and a group of western Oklahoma farmers and ranchers embarked on the 16th annual YBS trip hosted in Washington, D.C.
Comprised of 18-to-35-year-old members of the FCWO Young, Beginning & Small Farmers program, the attendees were able to experience a unique agriculture-focused leadership and educational trip to the nation’s capital.
The FCWO YBS program has been active and beneficial to communities across the state for over 20 years, said John Grunewald, FCWO president and CEO.
The YBS program concentrates on building the next generation of leaders for rural America so to keep communities viable and thriving, he added.
Trip consisted of everything from sight seeing, to discussion with the Oklahoma Senate and House of Represenatives Delegation, and the review of current agricultural policy.
“This has been a great program for Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma, as well as for YBS program members,” Grunewald said through a smile. “It helps develop leadership skills and allows the opportunity to be involved in politics and important policy first-hand.”
