OSU's Kim Anderson Says Wheat Price Drop Possibly Indicating a Return to Bearish Market
|
This week on SUNUP, Oklahoma State University Grain Marketing Specialist Kim Anderson said lower wheat prices could create a head and shoulders pattern in the market, which has folks watching the markets closely.
Earlier this week, wheat prices were down a dime at $6.70, corn was down a quarter at $5.15 and soybeans dropped 40 cents, at $12.15.
“If we break that head and shoulders, we could drop 50 cents, so the market is watching that pretty closely,” Anderson said.
A head and shoulders pattern appears as a baseline with three peaks, where the middle is highest. Usually, a head and shoulders pattern indicates a bullish-to-bearish trend reversal.
Anderson said lower-than-predicted harvest numbers for wheat is helping wheat prices from dropping lower at this point.
ProFarmer and Allendale, both market advisory companies, came out with surveys that showed harvest numbers for corn and soybeans higher than the United States Department of Agriculture’s predictions, which is causing corn and soybean prices to shrink.
Prices may be going down, but Anderson thinks they are simply balancing out.

Union Mutual was chartered in 1938 to write property and casualty insurance in the state of Oklahoma. Over the years, Union Mutual has maintained the attitude that started the company and continue to be that company that understands Oklahomans’ insurance needs when they contact any member of the UMIC team.
In poor economic times, in times when national insurance companies either stopped writing or completely left the state, Union Mutual has been there for Oklahomans. Today, Union Mutual writes insurance in all 77 counties of Oklahoma through almost 300 agency locations. These agents provide prompt and reliable quotes for most lines of insurance. Just recently, UMIC launched a new product in the preferred market space that has seen unprecedented growth with our rural customer base and falls in line with our Company mantra of “Protection not Politics”, when meeting the needs of our consumers and agents.
Monica Collison took over as CEO of Union Mutual in May of 2019. Under her leadership and through the hard work of her Union team, the company has continued to see positive results and productive growth with profit throughout the state of Oklahoma. Union Mutual offers a wide variety of coverage options for Oklahomans. For 82 years, Union Mutual has led the way to protect all of Oklahoma.

The Latest U.S. Drought Monitor Map Shows More Warm, Dry Weather for Oklahoma
|
Drought conditions worsened slightly in Oklahoma, with new areas of the state showing abnormally dry conditions. 6.61% of the state is currently in moderate or worse drought conditions, up from 4.74% a week ago. The Monthly Drought Outlook report shows drought development is likely for western and central parts of the state. In northwestern Oklahoma, drought conditions have worsened and are expected to persist.
Despite drought conditions worsening in the state, they are nowhere near the 25% drought conditions Oklahoma was experiencing at the start of 2021.
According to the report, Oklahomans can expect a probability of higher-than-normal temperatures and lower-than-normal precipitation in the next 6 to 10 days.

USDA Seeks Comments on Labeling of Meat and Poultry Products Derived from Animal Cells
|
In a press release, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) to solicit comments and information regarding the labeling of meat and poultry products made using cultured cells derived from animals under FSIS jurisdiction. FSIS will use these comments to inform future regulatory requirements for the labeling of such food products.
FSIS already has received thousands of comments on the topic, in response to a 2018 joint public meeting with FDA and regarding two petitions for rulemaking (from the United States Cattlemen’s Association and Harvard Law School Animal Law and Policy Clinic). The agency, however, needs specific types of comments and information that will inform the process of developing labeling regulations for meat and poultry products made using animal cell culture technology.
There is a 60-day period for comment on the ANPR. To view the ANPR and information on how to comment or submit information, visit the FSIS website.

U.S. Red Meat Exporters and Latin American Buyers Reunite at USMEF Product Showcase
|
More than 130 red meat buyers from 21 countries across Central and South America and the Caribbean gathered in San Jose, Costa Rica, for the 10th anniversary edition of the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) Latin American Product Showcase. Fifty-five U.S. exporting companies exhibited at the event, which was held annually from 2011-2019 before the COVID pandemic forced a postponement in 2020.
The showcase, held Aug. 25-26, is well-established as a go-to event for buyers and sellers alike, but this year's participants were especially anxious to renew business relationships and pursue new opportunities in face-to-face meetings. Pork and beef producers who provide financial support for the showcase also participated, with this year's event receiving funding from the USDA Market Access Program, the Beef Checkoff Program, the National Pork Board, the United Soybean Board, the Nebraska Beef Council and the Texas Beef Council.
"Despite all the travel challenges and other COVID-related restrictions, we were able to move forward with the showcase and the participants are very thankful to be back together after a long absence," Lucia Ruano, USMEF regional representative for Central America and the Dominican Republic, said. "It's a great opportunity not only to meet with suppliers, but also with colleagues from Colombia and other countries to learn about new concepts and product ideas. Right now U.S. pork is the main driver of our business - it has been growing and growing."

Dr. Harold Newcomb Says Strategic Deworming Helps Your Bottom Line
|
As ranchers and dairymen and women across Oklahoma prepare their operations for fall, another round of deworming cattle comes to mind. I talked with Harold Newcomb, technical services manager and veterinarian with Merck Animal Health, about parasite control strategies ahead of the turn of the season.
Newcomb said parasite control is important for three reasons: an infestation causes an animal to reduce their feed intake, lag in production - whether that is measured in weight gain, milk production or reproduction, and negatively affects their ability to viral vaccines and diseases.
“If you think about it, parasites are one thing that that animal is facing every day of its life when it’s out there grazing,” Newcomb said. “You get parasite control right and a lot of other things look good.”
If producers are worming cattle before the first frost, Newcomb said they likely have to worm those cattle again. Newcomb called this method strategic deworming.
“If you (deworm) too early, (cattle) just go back there and eat up more parasites and start pushing them out,” Newcomb said. “What you are trying to do is lower the parasite burden on the pasture.”
If producers hit parasites around the first frost, Newcomb said they will likely not have to worry about deworming until spring.
