At OSU's Ferguson College of Ag, Dr. Tom Coon is Excited About Students on Campus and a New Building to be Built
|
There is much going on at the Ferguson College of Agriculture at Oklahoma State University this fall. Dean of the Ferguson College of Agriculture Dr. Thomas Coon, talked with me today, about navigating in-person classes, record-high enrollment and construction of the New Frontiers Agricultural Hall.
“We have our second-highest number of Freshmen ever in our college,” Coon said. “We have had the most transfer students come into our college than we ever have - We did really well in recruiting students this year.”
Construction of the New Frontiers Agricultural Hall is in the process.
Coon said the New Frontiers Hall is going up just west of the Noble Research Center, right across the street from the Animal Sciences building and the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center.

Katelyn McCullock Sees High Hay Prices in the U.S.
|
As pasture and range conditions continue to deteriorate, according to the latest Crop Progress Report by the USDA, that's one sign that tight hay supplies may be with us not just this fall but well into 2022 as well. Katelyn McCullock, director and senior economist for the Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC), reports hay prices are rising.
“It is going to be a very tough hay-price situation for livestock producers for both the rest of this year and next year,” McCullock said.
She urged producers to watch the availability of hay. She said she is seeing the issue of availability affect regional areas or smaller, due to high gas and diesel prices keeping hay from traveling long distances.
The head of the LMIC was our guest on our latest Beef Buzz- click on the button below to hear her comments on where we are with hay and forage stocks across the country.

Ag Groups Support Nomination of Elaine Trevino for Chief Agricultural Negotiator
|
AFBF President Zippy Duvall said, “AFBF is encouraged by President Biden’s nomination of Elaine Trevino as chief agricultural trade negotiator. Her strong roots in agriculture and her experience in America’s largest exporting state have prepared her for the challenges of representing the nation on trade issues. We look forward to working with Ms. Trevino to help ensure a level playing field and to create new avenues for farmers and ranchers to feed the world.”
President and CEO of NMPF Jim Mulhern said, “The role of Chief Agricultural Negotiator is essential in pursuing positive trade policy results for U.S. dairy farmers and in expanding overseas markets for dairy products. NMPF is pleased that in choosing Ms. Trevino to nominate for this position, President Biden has selected someone with the right background and clear understanding of trade’s importance to American agriculture, both of which are vital to success in this position. I’ve been fortunate to serve on the president’s Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee with Ms. Trevino and hope to see swift confirmation of her nomination by the Senate so she can commence the work that’s so key for farmers across the country.”
President and CEO of USDEC Krysta Harden said, “U.S. dairy farmers, exporters and manufacturers have been eagerly awaiting the nomination of a Chief Agricultural Negotiator given the sizable role that trade plays in providing a home for the equivalent of more than a day’s worth of U.S. milk production each week. The world needs U.S. dairy and U.S. dairy needs the world. Our industry is eager for additional market opportunities to help us create more jobs here in America as we meet that demand with our high-quality, sustainably produced products. We urge the Senate to move swiftly to confirm Ms. Trevino and look forward to working closely with her to expand markets around the world.”

An Updated Study Shows the Value of Red Meat Exports to U.S. Corn Farmers
|
A recent study by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) indicates U.S. beef and pork exports added 41 cents per bushel to the value of corn in 2020. That’s 11.5% of the average annual price of $3.52/bushel. The overall value of red meat exports was $5.8 billion.
“Considering everything that happened in 2020, it is encouraging to see how red meat exports continued to show a strong return for U.S. corn farmers,” NCGA Market Development Action Team (MDAT) Chair and Iowa farmer Bob Hemesath said. “The animal ag industry is our largest customer. It’s important to continue to partner with USMEF and expand and grow these markets.”

North American Meat Institute Urges President Biden to Act on Unfair Ocean Carrier Practices
|
The North American Meat Institute (Meat Institute), along with more than 70 agriculture associations, today called on President Joe Biden to address ocean carrier practices that are causing increased costs and delays for American businesses.
To underscore the urgency of this crisis, and the need for immediate action from a broad cross-section of stakeholders, the organizations also delivered the letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers Cecilia Rouse, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chair Dan Maffei.
Carriers are increasingly declining or cancelling export cargo bookings, while frequent ship delays and cancellations with little or no notice to exporters, is delaying shipments by weeks or even months. The resulting inability of shippers to deliver their products on schedule affects the reliability of American exports, and subsequently decreases export values and market share.

Michael Speer with Golden Harvest Talks Corn with KC Sheperd
|
A recent multi-crop field day in Hydro, Okla. gave farmers and specialists a chance to inform the public on what they have going on in the western Oklahoma world of cotton, corn, peanuts and soybeans. Radio Oklahoma’s own KC Sheperd braved the heat to talk corn with Michael Speer, sales representative for Golden Harvest, among the tall corn stalks.
A challenge of growing crops in Oklahoma can be warm summer nights that don’t allow temperatures to cool off, therefore never giving crops a break from the heat. Luckily, June and July saw cool nights for corn in Hydro, which assisted the plants through their vegetative and reproductive stages.
“The corn looks really good,” Speer said. “For the most part, everything in Oklahoma has looked really good.”

University of Missouri FAPRI Baseline Report: Farm Income Could Decline Next Year
|
Higher commodity prices are contributing to a sharp increase in U.S. net farm income in 2021. However, under current policies, farm income could drop again in 2022 as government payments decline and production expenses rise. That's according to the September University of Missouri Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute September baseline report.
According to the summary in the report- "Strong demand from China, smaller supplies and other factors have resulted in higher prices for many agricultural commodities. Projected prices for corn, soybeans, hogs and several other commodities moderate in the years ahead, while cattle prices increase."
In 2022, FAPRI predicts net farm income declines by $23 billion, and net cash income falls even more sharply. Reduced government payments and higher production expenses explain the decline, as there is little net change in farm receipts. In later years, projected net farm income remains fairly steady in nominal terms at just under $100 billion each year.
Rising asset values and slower growth in debt reduces the sector’s debt-to-asset ratio in 2021 and 2022, temporarily reversing the trend of previous years. Lower projected farm income can halt the rise in farm real estate values in 2023, and the debt-to-asset ratio again begins to increase.
