Grand Champions in Market Animal Classes Picked at 2021 Tulsa State Fair
|
It was not your normal Grand Drive one day and Premium Auction the next day at the 2021 Tulsa State Fair. For several years- the Tulsa State Fair had held a night of Champions where the four species of market animals were brought together in the Ford Truck Arena where the Grand Champions were selected ahead of the Premium Sale the next day. The 2021 Night of Champions took that model- dumping the Premium Sale and instead asked the major donors to forego the appearance of an auction- donate up front and allow the end of show celebration all to be held on the Wednesday evening- spotlighting the top 150 4-H and FFA members who were the best of the show.
That happened for the first time last night- and it was a great celebration!
We spotlight the grands this morning- and will have more details on all 150 4-H and FFA members honored in the next day or so.
The Grand Champion Market Steer was shown by Laney Lawson of the Newcastle FFA- She had the top Crossbred in the show- and finally won the top prize in her final time showing at the Tulsa Fair- she got the single highest award of any one- $25,000.
|
Reserve Grand Champion Steer was shown by Denver McKay of Mulhall Orlando- Denver getting $20,000 for the Reserve Grand Steer.
The Grand Champion Market Barrow was shown by Garrison Straka from the Yukon FFA Chapter- Garrison receiving $10,000 for his best market hog of the show.
|
The Reserve Grand Market Barrow was shown by Channing Goodson of Tecumseh 4-H- picking up $7,500 for her efforts.
The Grand Champion Market Lamb was shown by Dylan Simpson of Locust Grove FFA. Dylan also received $10,000 as his award for showing the best lamb in Tulsa.
|
The Reserve Grand Champion Lamb was shown by young Sayde Allen of Canute.
The Grand Champion Market Goat was shown by Cara Cummings of Hollis FFA-
|
The Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat was shown by 4-Her Jack Ferrell from Tuttle.
After the Steer show wrapped up Wednesday afternon- ahead of the Night of Champions- our KC Sheperd talked with Steer Judge Amanda Schnoor- Click here to read more and hear her comments about the 2021 event.

August Beef Exports Top $1 Billion; Pork Exports Remain on Record Pace
|
U.S. beef exports soared to another new value record in August, topping the $1 billion mark for the first time, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF).
Pork exports posted another strong month in August, remaining ahead of the record pace established in 2020.
“The August export results would be impressive under any circumstances, but achieving these totals despite all the COVID-related obstacles at home and overseas is truly remarkable,” USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom said . “Our transportation and labor situation is challenging, and customers continue to face an uncertain business climate due to foodservice restrictions and other economic headwinds. Yet international buyers remain committed to the quality and consistency delivered by U.S. red meat, and the U.S. industry has gone to tremendous lengths to keep shipments moving.”
August beef exports totaled 132,577 metric tons (mt), up 21% from a year ago and the second largest volume this year, while export value climbed 55% to $1.04 billion. For January through August, beef exports increased 18% from a year ago to 955,407 mt, with value up 34% to $6.62 billion. Exports were also 6% higher in volume and up 20% in value compared to the record pace established in 2018.

Commissioners of the Land Office Land Lease Auctions Scheduled
|
The 39th annual Commissioners of the Land Office (CLO) fall land lease auctions will begin October 11, 2021 in Boise City and conclude October 25, 2021 in Shawnee. A total of 517 tracts in 32 counties will be available for lease at the eight auctions.
All leases are for a term of five years unless otherwise indicated. Detailed lists of available tracts, including minimum bids required, are available online.
“The CLO is pleased to offer over 150,800 acres on more than 500 tracts for lease at our fall auctions this year,” Elliot Chambers, secretary of the Commissioners of the Land Office, said. “These leases are suitable for a variety of agricultural and recreational uses and generate revenue that goes directly to Oklahoma education.”
Statewide, over 725,000 acres are actively managed by the Commissioners of Land Office and revenue generated from lease auctions is distributed to Oklahoma schools and universities. Last year, over $116 million was distributed to Oklahoma education beneficiaries.

OSU Scientists Develop New Test for Anaplasmosis in Livestock
|
Oklahoma State University scientists have developed a screening tool for anaplasmosis in livestock, which has the potential to save producers a lot of time and money.
The current industry standard for anaplasmosis detection in cattle, sheep and goats is the cELISA, a diagnostic tool that tells producers their livestock are infected with a disease. However, the test does not specifically indicate anaplasmosis, a bacterial disease transmitted through tick bites. This test costs $10 to $15 per blood sample due to an extensive process involving sending samples to a certified diagnostic laboratory.
“For most producers, it is just way too much money to test for this disease, so many of them end up losing 10 to 15 percent of their herd to it because they cannot afford to test them,” Bruce Noden, associate professor and medical/veterinary entomologist in the OSU Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, said.
According to Noden, what he and his colleagues have developed is a test strip, much like a pregnancy test, that is intended to act as a pre-screening tool for anaplasmosis.

Help Newly Arrived Cattle Recover Quickest by Providing High-Energy Feed
|
When stocker cattle arrive at their new home they are stressed from travel and most likely have not relaxed enough to properly eat or drink water for several days. That creates a negative energy balance, which puts cattle’s health at risk. In the past, producers have offered those cattle large amounts of roughage to help them get back on their hooves and feeling good.
We caught up with Dr. John Richeson, professor of beef cattle feedlot management at West Texas A&M University, to get the Beef Buzz on new research that shows large amounts of roughage may not be the best way to help stressed cattle recover the quickest.
“We want them to come to the bunk and consume feed,” Richeson said. “Roughage really does a good job of that, but yet, you dilute the energy of the ration if you are using a really high-roughage ration, typically.”
Richeson and other researchers at WTAMU found that high-energy rations helped high-risk calves correct that negative energy balance quicker than high-roughage ration.

Three Oklahoma Tech Companies Form Partnership to Benefit Cattle Ranchers
|
Oklahoma-based technology companies Land Scout, AgBoost and SmartStock recently announced a partnership to integrate their agricultural software platforms. The alliance was formed to benefit cattle ranchers and livestock producers both statewide and across the nation.
Land Scout's ranch management software gives users a wide range of tools to connect all their land, herds and resources in one platform.
AgBoost gives livestock producers the ability to track herd performance data and inventory to assist in a successful breeding program.
SmartStock's herd management technology system has designed a digestive track "bolus" similar to a tracking and monitoring device that is inserted into a dairy cow's digestive track to monitor health and vital signs.
The software systems are all designed to easily integrate with each other's platform, enhancing and augmenting the features, benefits and performance to offer improved outcomes for cattle industry users.
