Oklahoma Farm Bureau Delegates Re-elect Rodd Moesel- Adopt Marijuana Policy and More at Annual Convention
|
Delegates at the 80th Annual Convention of the Oklahoma Farm Bureau re-elected Rodd Moesel to his third two year term by acclimation on Saturday afternoon in Norman. After that session, Moesel talked with me about the progress the organization has been able to make since he was elected for the first time four years ago. Moesel says “it was kinda unexpected that I ran in the first place- but it has been an absolute joy working with the Farm Bureau folks- both the members we get to work with and the staff that we get to work- it’s been a real joy and I have soaked up and enjoyed every minute and have learned a lot.”
Moesel says that the number one issue in terms of the number of resolutions that were adopted were cannabis related. “Where we had little policy in our book on cannabis before this meeting- we not have a great deal of policy that has been adopted by the delegates.” That includes:
“increasing the new and renewal annual permit fees for producing marijuana comparable to or higher than neighboring states fee structures”
“transparent laws regarding the ownership of production, processing, distribution and dispensary entities.”
“Absolutely no foreign national ownership of marijuana grow operations.” (go to our webstory to read more of the marijuana related policies that were adopted.)
Beyond the cannibas issue- the delegates went on record to expand efforts in the state to eradicate feral swine, overturn the McGirt Supreme Court Ruling, oppose vaccine mandates from the Federal Government, continue to work to simplify the application process for the Ag Sales Tax Exemption, support the Right to Repair concept for modern farm equipment and to continue to develop private meat packing capacity in Oklahoma.

Gov. Kevin Stitt Says McGirt is Most Important Issue Facing Oklahoma
|
Friday, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt kicked off the general session at the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Federation’s 80th annual meeting. After his speech, Stitt went over some highlights with KC Sheperd, associate director of Radio Oklahoma Ag Network, one being that right now, Oklahoma has the largest savings account in the history of the state.
“It protects our future,” Stitt said. “I was able to hold all of our state agencies flat and give a tax cut to every single taxpayer, which I was really proud of. My business sense was always holding these agencies flat."
He also said the biggest issue the state is facing is the McGirt ruling. He said if the state fails to overturn the supreme court’s ruling on the issue, Oklahoma will not look or be the same in the coming decades.

Red Meat Exports Remain on Record Pace Through Third Quarter
|
Both U.S. beef and U.S. pork exports are on a record pace through September, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). Beef exports posted one of the best months on record in September, with value climbing nearly 60% above last year. Pork export volume was slightly below last September, but value still increased 8%.
Beef exports continued to soar in September at 123,628 metric tons (mt), up 20% from a year ago and the fourth largest volume of the post-BSE era. Export value jumped 59% to $954.1 million - the second highest month on record, trailing only August 2021.
Japan, South Korea and China/Hong Kong are all on track to be $2 billion destinations for U.S. beef in 2021, with strong growth in chilled beef exports to Japan and Korea. Beef exports to most Western Hemisphere markets are also trending significantly higher than a year ago.
Pork exports totaled 219,687 mt in September, down 1% from a year ago, but value was 8% higher at $608.3 million.

Sponsor Spotlight
Union Mutual was chartered in 1938 to write property and casualty insurance in the state of Oklahoma. Over the years, Union Mutual has maintained the attitude that started the company and continue to be that company that understands Oklahomans’ insurance needs when they contact any member of the UMIC team.
In poor economic times, in times when national insurance companies either stopped writing or completely left the state, Union Mutual has been there for Oklahomans. Today, Union Mutual writes insurance in all 77 counties of Oklahoma through almost 300 agency locations. These agents provide prompt and reliable quotes for most lines of insurance. Just recently, UMIC launched a new product in the preferred market space that has seen unprecedented growth with our rural customer base and falls in line with our Company mantra of “Protection not Politics”, when meeting the needs of our consumers and agents.
Monica Collison took over as CEO of Union Mutual in May of 2019. Under her leadership and through the hard work of her Union team, the company has continued to see positive results and productive growth with profit throughout the state of Oklahoma. Union Mutual offers a wide variety of coverage options for Oklahomans. For 82 years, Union Mutual has led the way to protect all of Oklahoma.

NCBA's Colin Woodall and Scott Yager on Cattle Industry's Sustainability Goals
|
NCBA CEO Colin Woodall told us sustainability is here to stay.
“Sustainability is here, so we had to step and back and think, ‘what does it mean to us,’” Woodall said. “We don’t want more rules and regulations, we don’t want the government to tell us what we have to do in terms of sustainability. We can now show quite clearly that we are part of the solution - not part of the problem. Our grazing lands can absorb that methane - grow good grass, our cattle can graze that grass and put a high-quality protein on the plate for consumers.”
That is a win for producers, consumers and the government, Woodall said.
Scott Yager, chief environmental council for the NCBA, said although cattle do produce methane, the IPCC report now classifies methane as a Short-Lived Climate Forcer (SLCF).
“After 10 years, methane breaks down in the atmosphere,” Yager said. “Now we know it should only be counted for 10 years.”

Woodward County is the Latest Natural Disaster Area by USDA
|
This Secretarial natural disaster designation allows the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) to extend much-needed emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disasters through emergency loans. Emergency loans can be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation or the refinance of certain debts. FSA will review the loans based on the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, these counties suffered from a drought intensity value during the growing season of 1) D2 Drought-Severe for 8 or more consecutive weeks or 2) D3 Drought-Extreme or D4 Drought-Exceptional.

House Passes $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Bill- Ag Groups Offer Praise
|
The House passed a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill on Friday night, 228-206, sending the measure to President Joe Biden's desk after months of limbo.
The legislation, stalled in the House since its August Senate passage amid Democratic infighting, stemmed from bipartisan upper-chamber negotiations on roads, rails and broadband, among other priorities. Only 13 House Republicans voted for the bill, alongside all but 6 Democrats.
Several Ag Groups offered reaction over the weekend to the bill being approved by the House and heading to the White House. Here are a couple of the reactions:
American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall
“While AFBF was disappointed with the unnecessary delays in the House of Representatives, we appreciate Congress finally passing crucial bipartisan infrastructure legislation. We cannot afford to ignore the millions of miles of roadways, waterways and railways rural America relies on to keep our country fed, especially as we see widespread supply chain challenges.
“Extending broadband to rural communities is just as much a priority. A quarter of America’s farm families have no high-speed internet access while working to meet the needs of a growing world. Investments in physical infrastructure like broadband will be critical to bridging the digital divide.
National Association of Wheat Growers CEO, Chandler Goule
“NAWG applauds this historic investment in our traditional infrastructure, which is critical to rural communities and agriculture’s long-term success and viability. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act makes a once-in-a-generation investment in roads, railways, locks and dams, and ports that the ag community relies on,” said NAWG CEO, Chandler Goule. “Prioritizing investments in infrastructure will enhance wheat growers’ competitiveness in the international market. Additionally, this legislation includes hours-of-service changes and provisions to address truck driver shortages which can, in part, help with some of the supply chain issues being experienced across America.”

Meet District One Oklahoma Farm Bureau Farm and Ranch Family Honoree- the Waylands of Arnett
|
Over the next several days- we will be spotlighting the nine district Farm and Ranch Families that were honored at the 80th Annual Meeting of the Oklahoma Farm Bureau- we will tell you a bit about them and will include the video of the District honorees shown on Saturday at the Awards Banquet.
Today- we start with District One:
The Wayland family roots run deep in the northwest Oklahoma community of Arnett.
Both Joe and Sally Wayland – along with their parents and grandparents – grew up on and around farms and ranches surrounding the Ellis County town.
“We’ve been here a long time,” Joe said.
The family tradition continued on as the Waylands have raised their three girls – Jordan, Peyton and Sarah – on an Angus cow/calf operation that traces its heritage back to both of their families.
The headquarters of the couple’s farm today was purchased from Sally’s grandfather, while most of the family’s land was cared for by Joe’s parents and grandparents. The family even lives in Sally’s grandparents’ house.
