OSU's Kim Anderson Says No Big Surprises in this weeks WASDE Report
|
This week on SUNUP, Oklahoma State University Grain Marketing Specialist Kim Anderson talks about wheat planting progress, as well as soybean, sorghum, and cotton harvest progress. He also shares good news about crop prices.
According to Anderson, he didn't see any big surprises in this week's WASDE report, "I don't think there were any surprises at all. You look at the pre-release estimates and they almost nailed everything on this WASDE. Soybeans were off just a little bit, the reaction on the prices was nearly zilch, with just minor moves during the week, So not many surprises."
Anderson said one thing he did want to point out was Russia's production, "I do think it's important that we note that the USDA raised Russia's production from about 2.67 billion to about 2.728 billion. The market I think expected that, I think all of us knew it was going to be higher, but USDA adjusted to higher production in that area."

Oklahoma's Drought Monitor Readings Improve Marginally in Latest Weekly Report
|
Oklahoma saw a slight improvement in the latest Drought Monitor report. In eastern Texas and Oklahoma, and in far northwest Louisiana and western Arkansas, widespread rain over a half inch fell this week. As a result, many areas from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and eastward along the Red River saw improvements to ongoing drought and dryness. Improvements also occurred in south Texas. (Click on the Map above to see more details of the latest Monitor Update)
In parts of southwest Texas that did not see rain, some worsening of drought conditions occurred, due to increasing precipitation deficits and lessening soil moisture. Conditions also worsened in parts of northern Louisiana and southern Arkansas where short-term precipitation deficits increased.
This week's Drought Monitor showed a five point improvement in Oklahoma's numbers to 77.27 percent of the state in Abnormally dry or worse condition- compared to 82.16 percent a week ago. The actual drought conditions of 36.72 percent of mostly moderate to extreme drought was virtually unchanged from a week ago of 36.86 percent. Compared to the start of 2021- our drought mo itor ratings of abnormally dry or worse have increased by over 30 percentage points of 43.17 percent.

USMEF Conference Focuses on Booming Demand, Supply-Side Challenges
|
The U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) Strategic Planning Conference and Board of Directors Meeting got underway Nov. 10 in Carlsbad, Calif. USMEF Chair Pat Binger, who heads international sales for Cargill Protein North America, welcomed members from across the nation - including farmers, ranchers, processors, exporters and traders - to the organization's first in-person meeting since 2019.
Binger previewed the conference agenda by noting that attendees will learn exciting details about booming demand for U.S. red meat in both established and emerging markets, but cautioned that the U.S. industry faces significant production and delivery hurdles.
"I see an agenda filled with excellent speakers and very timely topics - many of which are supply-side obstacles and challenges we would rather not be featuring, but that's the world in which we live today," Binger said. "Let us never lose sight of the fact that USMEF is first and foremost a demand-building organization. But with limited opportunities to meet in-person, it is important that we also share as much information and expertise as possible on our current transportation challenges, tight labor supplies and growing regulatory concerns."

Rural Oklahoma Advocacy Organization Applauds final Passage of Bi-partisan Infrastructure Agreement
|
The final passage of the bi-partisan infrastructure agreement passed by Congress last week represents a desperately needed investment in Rural America according to Clay Pope, Chairman of the Oklahoma Rural and Small-Town table of common interests (Table of Common Interests). Pope said this investment will have a huge impact across the board on rural infrastructure.
“It was a long time coming, but with the President’s signature we are going to see the largest investment in rural infrastructure that we have seen in a generation,” Pope said. “It’s a great day when members from both sides of the isle come together to negotiate something like this. With this large investment in broadband, as well as investments in areas like water and waste water, highways, ports and flood control, this potentially could have as big an impact on rural Oklahoma as any bill we have seen in decades.”
Earlier in the year the Oklahoma Rural and Small-Town table of common interests held an informational forum on the need for investment in broadband in Rural Oklahoma

Oklahoma Stocker Operator Jim Hollenbeck Says Performance Beef Helping Him Succeed
|
For the last two years, Hollenbeck Cattle Co., run by Jim Hollenbeck and his wife, have been using Performance Beef to manage their stocker operation in Jay, Okla. Today, Hollenbeck continues the conversation me about Performance Beef, a cattle management software is an easy-to-use technology to simplify feeding, performance and health data records for cattle producers.
“It makes our life simpler and easier,” Hollenbeck said. “It is really accurate in all the information that it gathers. It is easy for the guys who work for us to input the information into the system because it (connects via) Bluetooth to your (device).”
Two years ago, the Hollenbecks were looking to improve recordkeeping on the ranch when they saw the Performance Beef booth at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association convention and trade show. After deciding to try the software, he said he and his wife are glad that they did.

The Penz Family - OKFB Farm & Ranch Family 2021 - District 5

A deep love for cattle seems to run through the veins of Jeff Penz.
“I love every aspect of the cattle industry,” Jeff said. “I live, eat, sleep and breathe cattle.”
Jeff and his wife, Paula, raised their children, Derek and Presli, on the family’s registered Angus seedstock operation in southeast Oklahoma’s Bryan County.
“Jeff is right when he says he eats, sleeps and breathes cattle, because he does,” Paula said. “He has just a passion for it.”
Knowing the extent of Jeff’s love for cattle, Paula’s parents offered to give the young couple a few cows in the place of a wedding.
“You can imagine what Jeff picked,” she said, laughing.
“I said, ‘Well, absolutely, give me the cows,’” Jeff said. “It’s the best deal I ever made.”

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is the main reason Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity will dive into these stories each week, bringing you insight into the great things happening in and to rural Oklahoma. We will bring you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
KC Sheperd talks with Jed Green, the founder of the group ORCA- Oklahomans for Responsible Cannabis Action.
