Christmas Notes - Markets, etc.
|
Today's Ag Futures will be normal hours- closing shortly after 1 pm- Since Christmas falls on Saturday- the holiday for the Stock Market and the Ag futures is Christmas Eve- markets are closed with t he Ag grain and oilseed Futures to reopen Sunday evening with their overnight electronic trade at that time.
Livestock futures are closed until Monday morning at 8:30 am.
It's a mixed bag for Uncle Sam- most government offices will be closed on Friday 12/24- but the Post Office will be delivering mail tomorrow on Christmas Eve- no mail delivery on Saturday on 12/25.
The final trading days of 2021 kick off on Monday and for the Ag futures and equity markets- they have a normal week with trade all the way through closing time on New Year's Eve next Friday, December 31st.
As for us- some of radio stations will have reports from us on Christmas Eve- others will be playing Christmas music or have other special programming- check with them- we will not have an email tomorrow but will have one all next week to have tie a bow on 2021- lots of year end stories and interviews to share- PLUS lots of Cattlemen's Congress coverage as well.
Below- you will find several Christmas stories- this year- you can hear from KC Sheperd and see her precious family- hear from our newest team member- Chelsea Stanfield and you can read my 2021 Christmas thoughts as well.
THANK YOU for your support of our daily efforts to provide agricultural news and market info vis this email- on our web and on the radio. YOU are a BLESSING!

National Livestock was founded in 1932 in Oklahoma City. National’s Marketing Division offers cattle for sale weekly at the Oklahoma National Stockyards in Oklahoma City. The Finance Division lends money to ranchers across several states for cattle production. The Grazing Division works with producers to place cattle for grazing on wheat or grass pastures.
National also owns and operates other livestock marketing subsidiaries including Southern Oklahoma Livestock Auction in Ada, Oklahoma, OKC West Livestock Market in El Reno, Oklahoma, and the nation’s premier livestock video sale, Superior Livestock Auction. National offers customers many services custom made for today’s producer. To learn more, click here for the website or call the Oklahoma City office at 1-800-310-0220.

2022 Cattlemen's Congress: It is Going to Be Huge!
|
The second-ever Cattlemen’s Congress is only days away! After a wildly successful inaugural show last winter, Tyler Norvell, a member of the Board of Directors for Cattlemen’s Congress, and the rest of the board are excited to welcome everyone back to the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress, Jan. 1 - 16, 2022 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
“It is here,” Norvell said. “Jarold Callahan (Chairman of Cattlemen's Congress Board of Directors) mentioned yesterday that we do not get much of a Christmas anymore. I said, ‘we made that decision when we had this show last year.’”
Norvell is exactly where he wants to be. He told me earlier this week that if he had been told this time last year that the show would become such a hit, he would not have believed it.
“We are looking forward to growing it,” Norvell said. “We have more than 9,000 entries - same as last year. For the trade show there is a waiting list and for the herd sire area there is a waiting list. The buzz is incredible.”
Of course- you need to remember that a year ago- things were quickly thrown together to have a cattle show replacement for the National Western in Denver which got shut down due to Covid. Congress was the only game in town last January for the nation's purebred beef cattle industry- but this year- Denver is back and the great majority of purebred industry has chosen Oklahoma City over Denver- entry numbers at Congress are well above the entry numbers in Denver- how quickly things change!

Mike Schulte Looks Back on 2021 Wheat Crop, Forward to 2022 Crop
|
Considering the ongoing global pandemic, supply-chain issues, cattle market volatility, political turmoil, animal rights extremists you could easily chalk 2021 up to a hard year. Looking at the year through the eyes of a winter wheat farmer in Oklahoma, things may have a slightly rosy tint to them.
Mike Schulte, executive director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, told us that the 2021 winter wheat harvest ended up being one of the best crops the state has seen in the last several years.
Winter wheat farmers in the region hit the jackpot. While prices climbed due to a weak spring wheat harvest, low expectations for large players, like Russia and even lower harvests as the season went on, Oklahoma winter wheat producers had opportunities to sell wheat high.
“Right now, I think producers are on edge about what next year’s input costs,” Schulte said. “(At the same time, producers are trying to) make management decisions at a time when we are in significant drought conditions. (We are) hopeful that we will still get moisture later this winter when it is really needed for the crop.”

How Santa's Reindeer Get the Job Done
|
A note for our readers- new and old- our dear friend Glenn Selk penned this article years ago- but it's still one of my favorites for the Christmas issue of our email- read the first bit of it here- and then go to our website to read it all- Thanks Glenn!!!!
It is the “most wonderful time of the year” and this week Dr. Glenn Selk joins us to address the age-old questions of what permit reindeer to pull Santa’s sleigh all over the globe on Christmas eve.
Have you ever wondered how Santa's reindeer can make that monumental journey on Christmas Eve? How do they keep warm while flying around on Christmas Eve? How do they fly?
If you have ever had these questions, you are in luck! Click the blue button below for the answers.

I feel like Christmas has snuck up on us this year! I want to start off by saying how grateful I am to all of our amazing producers, listeners, and contributors and to thank you for all you do to help us do our job.
They say "The Days are Long but the Years are Short" and I'm really feeling that this year. As we get ready for Christmas at my house with my 8-year-old twin girls, I wonder if this is the last year that they 'believe'.. (Even though I end up being sooooooo ready for that Elf on the Shelf to leave each year,) I know that I will miss the magic when my kids no longer believe in Santa. Christmas through their eyes has been so much fun to watch throughout the years, and I do hope they always have that Christmas Magic.
This has been another year of learning. Learning how to navigate through an ongoing Pandemic, Learning to navigate through less than pleasant people, navigating through health issues, politics, family conflicts, schedules, labor shortages, spelling tests, delayed flights, accidents, and so many others.. But the one thing that is always so prevalent to me is the blessings I continue to see that God continues to provide.
This is such an incredible time in my life, and I know that there will continue to be trials, but I'm so grateful to have Friends, Family, and most importantly a Father in heaven that walks beside us all daily, and forgives us when we don't always get it right.. and when we ask for forgiveness for talking hateful to the customer-service person, family member, or the IT person on the other end of the phone.. ;)
The Most important Lesson I've learned over the past year is don't let anybody make you Cruel. No matter how badly you want to give the world a taste of its own medicine, it is never worth losing yourself. I hope you all have too many blessings to count this Holiday Season, and I'm thankful for all of you!
Merry Christmas!
~KC

Your Presence is Chelsea's Present
|
What a special time of year to get the pleasure of formally saying hello! With just six months under my belt as an Oklahoma State University alumna and Radio Oklahoma Ag Network reporter, it is easy to look back on this year and feel like parts are from another lifetime. I am so grateful to be here, in this moment. With the support and guidance from my colleagues at ROAN, Oklahoma farmers and ranchers and our listeners, I have had the warmest of welcomes.
I was not always an Oklahoman. When I moved here in 2014, I was blown away by how incredibly jolly Oklahomans are all year round. The kindness has never ceased and now, I proudly call Oklahoma home.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I look forward to meeting more of you, listening to your stories and walking in stride with you through the good, the bad and the ugly to come. Let’s take these next couple of days to be present with our loved ones. Before we know it, you’ll be reading these messages next Christmas.
Cheers!

Ever had a No Vacancy Sign in Your Travels???
|
Many of you were stuck at home much of 2020- and finally felt safe enough (and had gotten tired of not getting away) to travel here in 2021. Depending on how and where you travel- you may have either carefully planned your destinations and lodging ahead or you may have just headed out. Either way- you may have discovered a lot of other people were traveling too- and some of your familiar places may have had no vacancy for when you wanted to go.
Consider a young unwed couple traveling two thousand years ago- she's pregnant- he's anxious to take good care of her and they have to go to his family's home town- they arrive and there is not a single guest room for them to stay at when suddenly the contractions come- the water breaks and she says- Joseph- it's time!
Dr. Luke explains it this way- "While they were there [in Bethlehem], the time came for her to give birth, and she gave birth to her Son, her firstborn; and she wrapped Him in [swaddling] cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no [private] room for them in the inn."
Lots of folks since that time have written about that night- a Christian writer by the name of Tara Johnson from Arkansas points out that the Greek for 'Inn" really means a guest room or upper room- and she says "It’s not that Joseph and Mary were late to town, but it’s that they were rejected by their family. Clearly they had family members in town, as that was the reason they returned to Bethlehem for the census."
Joseph's family rejected he and Mary. Tara adds "Whether “No room” was the result of a stressed out innkeeper or judgmental family members, the result was the same…those who pushed Mary, Joseph and Jesus away missed out on the greatest blessing to ever sweep planet earth. If they only knew Who was coming…if they only knew there were shepherds trembling on a hillside, watching the heavens flood with angels proclaiming the Good News…if they only heard the sound of God filling the quiet room with a lusty cry. The Author of Life crying peace into the darkness. What beauty, what mind-bending astonishment."
Do we do the same thing? "It’s easy to get wrapped up in hanging the lights and rushing around to get all the shopping done, but ignore the homeless shelters. It’s far too convenient to plan our Christmas menu and fight the crowds at the grocery store than to give our time visiting someone who is lonely. It’s easier to check off our do-list than forgive the family member who hurt us so deeply.
“No room.” “No time.” “I’m tired.” “That person asking for help is different than me.” If we’re so busy doing things for Jesus that we can’t stop and lend a hand to the least of these, then we’ve missed Him"
My prayer for you and I this Christmas is that we don't miss the real reason that we have that Baby because we get too busy. We need to remember that God planned this all out- to give us a chance to have fellowship with Him- and to then act as His Ambassadors in a very dark world.
I hope you know who the Baby really is. If you want to talk about it- give me a shout- my phone and email is at the bottom of this email.
From Jan and I- we say thank you for the chance to serve you for these many years- our prayer is that you have a Happy and Holy Holiday season- Merry Christmas from the Hays Family.
