Drought Monitor Report Shows Drought Conditions Hold Steady
|
With data ranging between Jan. 5 to 11, drought conditions have not changed much in Oklahoma. After the mass deterioration of drought conditions in the state around Christmas, last week’s report showed 40% of the state was classified under extreme drought conditions. In the last week, extreme drought conditions have only increased by 1%.
Right now, 94% of the state is experiencing abnormally dry conditions or worse. Moderate drought conditions are reported in 16% of the state, severe drought conditions are reported in 30% and severe drought conditions are reported in 41%.
A small pocket of eastern Oklahoma continues to fight off drought conditions.
The 6-to-10-day precipitation outlook map shows Oklahoma is likely to receive sub-normal precipitation levels. The 6-to-10-day temperature outlook map shows excessive temperatures are very likely.
Click on the map above of the state to see all the details of this week's drought conditions from border to border.

American Supremes All Hail From Texas at Cattlemen's Congress
|
Cattlemen's Congress is starting to wind down. It was the turn of the American breeds on Thursday evening at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds as three more Supreme Champions were named at the 2022 show.
A total of eight bulls were paraded before the judges for the selection of the Supreme Open Bull. They zeroed in and selected an UltraBlack bull owned by GKB Brangus- Gary and Kathy Buchhols of Waxahachie, Texas.
Gary Buchhols was really excited after seeing his bull chosen to the Supreme of the American Breeds ar Cattlemen's Congress. He and his wife Kathy talked with Oklahoma Farm Report's KC Sheperd afterwards. Kathy told KC "He's a very sound moving, functional bull that's all red meat and presents it in a very compete, appealing package."
Earlier in the evening was the Supreme Junior Female drive- won by Roxton Stone from Texas with his Black Brangus heifer, SJCC HENNESSEY 804H8. The heifer came out of the Southern Jewel Cattle Company of Victoria, Texas. Roxton is seen talking with Jarold Callahan after the show- that picture is below.
Next up was the selection of the Supreme Open Female- and the Supreme Champion was a Brangus owned by Lucherk Cattle of Poth, Texas and shown by LJ Rafter. The picture of this heifer is included in story 4.

Don't Miss Upcoming Surveys for Oklahoma Cow-Calf Producers
|
This week Kellie Raper, extension beef cattle marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University has details about some upcoming surveys for Oklahoma cow-calf producers. Kellie's comments on these surveys come from the weekly Cow-Calf Corner published electronically by OSU.
Two important cattle-related surveys will be launched by Oklahoma State University in late January, including the Oklahoma Cow-Calf Biosecurity Survey and the Oklahoma Beef Management and Marketing Survey. Not all producers will receive a survey and, if you do, you will only receive one of the surveys - not both. You may have already received a “heads-up” postcard as a potential survey participant in December or early January. If so, please keep an eye out for the mail survey, which will be coming from the Southern Plains Field Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service in Oklahoma City.
The purpose of the Biosecurity survey is to learn more about producers’ biosecurity practices and why some biosecurity practices are more widely adopted than others. The Biosecurity survey will help us index biosecurity practices by adoption rate, cost effectiveness, applicability to cow-calf operations and barriers to on-farm adoption. Ultimately, it will help us develop extension programming to educate producers and their teams, including veterinarians, on cost effective biosecurity practices that can be implemented on-farm right now.

Why Maine-Anjou Cattle are Popular In and Out of the Show Ring
|
Among the 25 unique breeds attending the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress, Maine-Anjou cattle arrived early in the show’s schedule and have done well. The breed was present in all the supreme drives and took the title of Supreme Champion Junior Female (pictured). You can see more of that heifer, shown by Raimey Yocham, by visiting the Cattlemen’s Congress Facebook page.
The Oklahoma Farm Report’s own KC Sheperd spoke with Blake Nelson, executive vice president of the American Maine-Anjou Association, last weekend about the breed. He said a lot has changed for the French-founded breed, but some key qualities remain.
Originally a dual-purpose breed raised for milk production and beef, their thriftiness caught the attention of cattle breeders in Europe early on. Today, the cattle are often referred to as a feedlot manager’s dream!
“For folks who feed out cattle, if you are wanting to increase ribeye area and your overall yields, our bulls can really do that,” Nelson said. “We have always been noted at a muscle breed.”

OSU's Kim Anderson Discusses Three Significant Reports Released by the USDA This Week
|
This week on SUNUP, Oklahoma State University Grain Marketing Specialist Kim Anderson talks about the three big reports that came out of the U.S. Department of Agriculture this week. He said of those three reports, the WASDE report has the largest impact on the grain markets.
“The WASDE report contains all the information and summarizes it down to an average annual price,” Anderson said.
He said there were not any surprises in the report. Looking at wheat, he said ending stocks for wheat and corn were slightly bearish, while soybeans were right on target.
“If you look at the world’s ending stocks, every one of them was exactly where (experts) expected them to be,” Anderson said.

Ag Tractor, Combine Unit Sales Finish 2021 Up Double Digits in U.S., Canada
|
Nearly 360,000 total tractors and combines left dealer lots in 2021 in North America. U.S. and Canadian unit sales of ag tractors and combines finished 2021 with gains of more than ten% in nearly every segment in both countries according to the latest data from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).
U.S. total farm tractor sales gained 0.3% for the month of December compared to 2020, while U.S. self-propelled combine sales for the month saw a gain of 25.3%. Those gains contributed to a total gain for the year of 10.3% for tractors, and 24.7% for combine harvesters.
In Canada, sales of tractors for the month of December grew 10.5%, while combines fell 17.6% year-over-year. However, total sales for 2021 were up 19.4% for tractors, and up 23.1% for combines.
“Seeing gains in the double digits across North America year-over-year for both tractors and combines is great for equipment manufacturers,” Curt Blades, senior vice president, industry sectors & product leadership at the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, said.
