OMMA's Adria Berry Updates OCA Members on the State of the Medical Marijuana Industry
|
Since the passage of State Question 788, the legalization of medical marijuana has plagued Oklahoma lawmakers, leadership and agricultural producers. With just 60 days to establish licensing, regulations and program administration, it is no wonder the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority has struggled to oversee the state’s newest commodity.
In August 2021, Governor Kevin Stitt appointed Adria Berry as director of OMMA. In her first months in the new role, she has been praised by all sides of the aisle for her competence and cooperation. Joining Oklahoma Cattlemen at their Winter Policy Meeting, Berry updated producers on OMMA’s progress.
“We start reigning in the industry by enforcing our laws,” Berry said. “Once we have the Seed-to-Sale program running, we will be able to get a handle on the situation.”
The Seed-to-Sale tracking system is waiting on guidance provided by the court. If the court chooses to lift the stay on the system on Feb 24, the tracking system will require all medical marijuana product traceability from - exactly how it sounds - seed to consumer.
At this time, Berry said the state doesn’t have enough staff members to handle the massive workload. Berry adds that if you see illegal activity taking place near your farm or ranch, you are encouraged to contact local law enforcement. If you wish to file a complaint against a medical marijuana business, you can complete the OMMA Business Complaint Form.

Congressman Frank Lucas Believes GOP Could Take Back the US House in 2022
|
In a top cattle-producing state like Oklahoma, do not be surprised to find yourself rubbing elbows with congressmen and state lawmakers at an event like the Oklahoma Cattlemen Association’s Winter Policy Meeting. Especially when you have a Congressman like Frank Lucas; a fifth-generation Oklahoman who also produces wheat and cattle in Western Oklahoma.
Lucas spoke to constituents at the meeting and laid out his expectations for the coming legislative session and political season. He told us crafting the 2023 Farm Bill needs to kick into gear.
Since 2022 is an election year, he said the chief accomplishments will be just working through the regular appropriation bills and funding the government into the next year. At the same time, he predicts Republicans will be able to take back the U.S. House of Representatives and in turn lead all the House Committees.
“The Rules Committee is one of those entities that the public is not really aware of, but every bill - the Farm Bill, Appropriations Bill - goes to the rules committee before it comes to the floor,” Lucas said.
If Congressmen Tom Cole and Lucas both win re-election this year and republicans win the majority of U.S. House seats, there is a good chance Cole will become the chairman of the Rules Committee with Lucas becoming chairman of the Science Committee. Lucas is also set up to become the senior member of the House Agriculture Committee and serving next to Congressman GT Thompson, the likely Chairman, putting Republicans in strategic positions of power within the House when it comes to crafting agriculture policy.

USDA Announces Conservation Reserve Program Signups for 2022
|
Agricultural producers and landowners can sign up soon for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), a cornerstone conservation program offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a key tool in the Biden-Harris Administration effort to address climate change and achieve other natural resource benefits. The General CRP signup will run from Jan. 31 to Mar. 11, and the Grassland CRP signup will run from Apr. 4 to May 13.
“We highly encourage farmers, ranchers and private landowners to consider the enrollment options available through CRP,” Zach Ducheneaux, administrator of USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), said. “Last year, we rolled out a better, bolder program, and we highly encourage you to consider its higher payment rates and other incentives. CRP is another way that we’re putting producers and landowners at the center of climate-smart solutions that generate revenue and benefit our planet.”
Producers and landowners enrolled 4.6 million acres into CRP signups in 2021, including 2.5 million acres in the largest Grassland CRP signup in history. There are currently 22.1 million acres enrolled, and FSA is aiming to reach the 25.5-million-acre cap statutorily set for fiscal year 2022.

Dairy MAX Hosts Educational Webinars with Industry Experts
|
While the pandemic continued to disrupt the world in 2021 Dairy MAX utilized webinars as well as existing communications to reach dairy farmers throughout our region. As the new year approaches, Dairy MAX will continue hosting these webinars covering a wide range of topics focusing on the dairy industry and checkoff programs. Most recently, William Loux, senior director of Global Trade Analysis for the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC), joined a Dairy MAX webinar to give insight into the state of the International Dairy Market.
USDEC and Dairy MAX are valued partners that work together in the broader scope of the checkoff program. USDEC, which represents the global trade interest of U.S. dairy, works to provide strategic long-term growth of the U.S. dairy products in foreign markets. Today, milk from 1 in 7 trucks leaving American dairy farms ends up in products and ingredients sold overseas, making exports a vital growth path for farmers and processors alike.
“Our dairy farmer’s support of exports and the experts at USDEC are instrumental to the sustainability and growth of dairy in the Dairy MAX region," Marty McKinzie, Dairy MAX vice president, industry image and relations said. "Through our webinar and our team’s dairy farm visits we want to share the value of USDEC to the farmers who work tirelessly to supply the sustainable and nutritious dairy foods throughout our region."

Oklahoma Rancher Justin Reikowsky Reviews Performance Beef: Cattle Management Software
|
In the 21st Century, farming and ranching is practically a science, involving hypotheses, theories, data collection and research to build a truly successful operation. Managing all that can be a huge amount of work for a cattle producer who oversees their entire operation. Luckily, Performance Beef: Cattle Management Software is an easy-to-use technology that simplifies feeding, performance and health data records for producers.
Justin Reikowsky, owner and operator of R Bar Ranch Co. in Wayne, Okla., told us that Performance Beef has streamlined the feeding process, allowing him more time with his family.
“We used to come home every evening, and I would have to spend an hour entering feed data into a completely different software,” Reikowsky said. “Now that we are using Performance Beef, I have an hour of my day back and I get to spend it with my family.”
Not only is Performance Beef affordable, but it has simplified data collection and analysis for Reikowsky.
“Technology is supposed to simplify our lives, right?” Reikowsky said. “Performance Beef simplifies everything from feeding, shipping and receiving, moving pens, billing customers - it is extremely simple. We love it.”

Plan the New Year with FAPC
|
t’s easy to lose track of the big picture and focus on routine tasks. However, the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center offers numerous training opportunities throughout the year to help others increase productivity and reduce business expenses.
Undeniably, there’s something offered for all food and agricultural processors and entrepreneurs, so take advantage of the educational programs, trainings and seminars at FAPC. Invest in yourself this year and allow FAPC to help you stay on the forefront of cutting-edge value-added processing and technology.
Andrea Graves, business planning and marketing specialist, said FAPC offers numerous trainings throughout the year such as helping someone with brushing up their skills and renewing a certification, to helping a new entrepreneur getting started.
“In these trainings we do our best to help solve problems and, most importantly, work to prevent them,” Graves said. “We have a great knowledge base through the faculty and staff at FAPC who serve as instructors to help guide participants. It often leads to long FAPC/client relationships, which are great for both parties.”
Kickstart the new year by attending the Remote Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training Course, which is offered Feb. 4 and Feb. 22. The training, offered in collaboration with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food & Forestry, is one way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in § 112.22(c). This opportunity is perfect for fruit and vegetable growers interested in learning about produce safety.
