More Regulatory Power for County Commissioners Concerns Oklahoma Farm Bureau and Other Ag Groups
|
The first week of the 2022 Oklahoma State Legislative Session is now in the record books- and according to Steve Thompson, the Vice President of Public Policy for the Oklahoma Farm Bureau- the State Legislature has jumped out to a rocket fast start in considering bills in Committees on both sides of the Capitol.
After Monday afternoon's State of the State Address by Governor Kevin Stitt, Committees were actively meeting and acting on dozens of bills starting Tuesday morning.
We spoke with Thompson on Thursday afternoon and Thompson shared details of several issues that had caught the attention of the state's general farm organization.
Thompson tells Hays that Two bills, HB2990 and
SB1182, are very concerning for Agriculture, Energy and other groups as they could result in a "fundamental shift in how we do county government in Oklahoma." The measures would allow County Commissioners to basically regulate anything that they are not specifically prohibited from doing in current state law. Thompson says Farm Bureau and other groups fear that could result in a patchwork of regulations and rules that would be vastly different from one county from another in the unincorporated parts of Oklahoma.

Kim Anderson on Rising Grain Prices Despite Larger Ending Stocks in Feb. WASDE Report
|
This week on SUNUP, Oklahoma State University Grain Marketing Specialist Kim Anderson talks about the latest WASDE report that was released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wednesday.. Anderson said overall, there were no major changes in supply and demand expectations.
“Ending stocks for wheat, corn and beans went up a little bit,” Anderson said. “They were near the top end of the range of pre-release estimates, yet prices for all went up.”
According to prices out of Medford, Okla. right now, wheat is selling for about $7.85. Producers looking to sell during the summer harvest period can make $7.90 per bushel. Current corn prices are about $6.30, with forward contracts at about $5.60 for harvest delivery. Current grain sorghum prices are about $6.45, with forward contracts at about $5.55. Soybeans are up to $15.40 a bushel on the cash market, and 2022 harvest prices are about $13.60. Lastly, cotton is around $121 per 100 lbs in Oklahoma and futures prices are about $125 per 100 lbs.

Last Week's Snow Does Little to Ease Oklahoma Drought Conditions
|
From Feb. 2 to Feb. 8, drought conditions slightly decreased in response to the major winter storm that dusted most of Oklahoma with snow.
Right now, 91% of the state is experiencing abnormally dry conditions or worse, down from 96%. Moderate drought conditions have increased as overall drought conditions eased, affecting 11% of the state. Severe drought conditions decreased, affecting 26% of the state. Extreme drought conditions decreased, affecting 45% of the state. Exceptional drought conditions did not change, affecting nearly 3% of the state.
A small pocket of eastern Oklahoma continues to fight off abnormally dry conditions or worse.
The 6-to-10-day precipitation outlook map shows Oklahoma is likely to receive above-normal precipitation levels for this time of year. The 6-to-10-day temperature outlook map shows higher-than-normal to normal temperatures are likely for most of the state.

US Beef's Diversified Market Portfolio Enabled 2021's Record Beef Exports
|
U.S. beef exports exceed previous volume and value records, setting a new value record of $10.6 billion. Dan Halstrom, president and CEO of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, looked back on U.S. beef’s jackpot year with us. Halstrom said looking at the dollar signs U.S. beef raked in last year is exciting, but the real story on beef is the broad-based growth across many regions of the world.
“China, Japan, Korea, Central America, South American and Indonesia - it is really encouraging to see that broad-based growth,” Halstrom said.
With China boasting such a large population, at about 1.4 billion people, economists already foresee it becoming our nation’s largest market in the next couple of years. In 2021, the Chinese market brought in about $2 billion, the same as Japan and Korea.

New Technologies Available to Producers in the Southern Plains by Bayer Crop Science
|
The current drought that is expanding across the Southern Plains does not look like it is going anywhere soon and professionals in the agricultural world are gearing up for the long haul. One company has developed technology to help folks in the pasture business right now.
“One is a vegetative product that is aimed at brush (control),” Brian Cain, southern range and pasture segment manager at Bayer Crop Science, said. “Invora is relatively new; it has been on the market for about a year, but we have seen great results.”
Invora Herbicide transforms invasive brush into productive forage, restoring your land with innovative chemistry that redefines brush control. Right now, Invora manages brush like mesquite and huisache best, with just one application.
“Rezilon is another product that focuses on grass pasture protection,” Cain said. “It is a preemergent product; we are mainly taking out annual grasses and some annual broadleafs - the crabgrass, goosegrass and even sand burr is a target.”
Rezilon herbicide can provide you with increased hay quality by managing summer and winter annual broadleaf weeds and grasses. Its unique mode of action offers long-lasting protection from troublesome weed species and helps support managing annual grasses in perennial grass hay fields - a quality few preemergence or postemergence herbicides are able to maintain.
