More Than 97% of Oklahoma is Facing Abnormally Dry Conditions or Worse
|
With data ranging between Feb. 9 through Feb. 15, drought conditions expanded, closing in on the small area of eastern Oklahoma that has continued to fight off drought conditions. At this point, every county in Oklahoma is experiencing abnormally dry conditions or worse. Parts of Adair, Cherokee, Delaware and Ottawa counties make up the small area that accounts for the 2.33% of the state not suffering from abnormally dry conditions or worse.
Right now, 97.6% of the state is experiencing abnormally dry conditions or worse. Moderate drought conditions affect 11% of the state. Severe drought conditions affect 20% of the state. Extreme drought conditions affect 52%, increasing the most, at 7.5% from the previous week. Exceptional drought conditions affect nearly 3% of the state, unchanged from last week.
Click on the map above to see more details of the drought status- based on conditions before this week's rain and snow.
The 6-to-10-day precipitation outlook map shows Oklahoma is likely to receive above-normal precipitation levels for this time of year. The 6-to-10-day temperature outlook map shows below-normal temperatures are likely for most of the state.
As of Thursday morning, Oklahoma has received rain and snow, with the central part of the state leading with precipitation at 1.45 recorded inches in Washington, Okla. Please note, this Drought Monitor report does not account for any precipitation recorded as of Feb. 16 and on.

Oklahoma Career Tech Names Dr. Lee Denney as Interim State Director
|
The Oklahoma State Board of Career and Technology Education accepted State Director Marcie Mack’s resignation, effective March 1, during its meeting Thursday and named Dr. Lee Denney as interim state director.
Mack submitted her resignation in January, when she announced she had accepted a position as manager of talent development with MidAmerica Industrial Park in Pryor, Oklahoma.
Denney, a resident of Cushing, served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 2004 to 2016, representing District 33. She served on various committees, including appropriations and budget; higher education career technology; energy; economic development and tourism; arts and culture, as chairman; and banking, as vice chairman. She also served as chairman of the appropriations and budget subcommittee on common education.
During its executive session, the board also discussed the procedure to hire a new state director. The board created a subcommittee to work with a search firm to pursue a national search for a new Oklahoma CareerTech state director. Members of the subcommittee are Randy Gilbert, Brian Bobek and Edward Hilliary Jr.

OSU's Kim Anderson Explains Why Current Wheat Prices are Better Than Previous Years
|
This week on SUNUP, Oklahoma State University Grain Marketing Specialist Kim Anderson talks about how this year’s wheat prices compare to previous years’ wheat prices. So far, he said they are higher than usual!
“We have relatively good prices (now),” Anderson said. “We had record production around the world at 28.5 billion bushels - almost the same as last year, however our consumption this year was a record 28.8 billion bushels.”
Although we are growing a lot of wheat, globally, we are also consuming a lot of wheat, globally. Ending stocks are predicted to go down this year and there is a lot of uncertainty in the market, Anderson said.
In all, Anderson thinks $5.00 will the be lowest wheat prices will reach in the next year.

Jarold Callahan Explains Good Bulls VS. Great Bulls Ahead of the Express Ranch Spring Bull Sale
|
Raising bulls can be a lot like raising kids; each child or each set of bulls is a little bit different than the previous one. With spring just around the corner, the spring bull sale season is about to kick off. The event you are not going to want to miss is the Express Ranches Spring Bull Sale.
Jarold Callahan, CEO of Express Ranches, told us he is excited about this year’s set of bulls. The sale is set to take place March 4 at the ranch in Yukon, Okla. where 433 Angus bulls and 51 Hereford bulls will be sold in lot order. See the details in this year’s sale catalog.
“As you have to do for your commercial clientele, we are constantly sampling new, young genetics so we have something different and hopefully better to sell them,” Callahan said. “It will be the first big sets of bulls by XAR Stock Fund and EXAR Grenade. Those bulls look to be extremely good.”
Another group Callahan said he has his eye on are sons by EXAR Jet Fuel.
Callahan said ultimately, Express Ranches wants to offer an overall superior “package” with each bull they sell. He said his definition of a good bull is one that stays in the pasture, breeds cows and does not cause any problems. A very good bull does all that while adding additional value to the calves, he added.

State Rep. Ty Burns Talks Oklahoma Certified Beef Program Expanding to Other Animal Protein
|
Homegrown… right here in Oklahoma, is the motto of the Oklahoma Certified Beef Association. In 2020, Ty Burns, Oklahoma representative for district 35, introduced a bill that would define Oklahoma Certified Beef as guaranteed to be bred, born, raised and processed exclusively within Oklahoma. The bill passed and the first OCB steak was enjoyed at the top of the Devon Tower by Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt early last year.
Recently, we spoke with Burns about the progress OCBA has made since. He said the progress the association has made is exciting but there are still some growing pains.
“I did not feel like there was any other avenue for cow-calvers,” Burns said. “You can take them to the sale barn and that is it. I was trying to figure out how to promote and protect Oklahoma cow-calvers and it became easy - it popped into my head while I was driving down a Pawnee County back road.”
The association is looking to expand the program to include other animal protein sources, Burns said. The best way to grow this program is for Oklahoma producers to get involved.

Students Celebrate Agriculture and Leadership Around the Country
|
Agriculture is part of our daily lives - from the food we eat to the clothes we wear. Next week, more than 735,000 FFA members across the country will share the story of agriculture as part of National FFA Week.
Whether through service projects or community gatherings, National FFA Week is a time for FFA members to raise awareness about the National FFA Organization’s role in developing agriculture's future leaders and the importance of agricultural education.
National FFA Week always runs from Saturday to Saturday and encompasses Feb. 22, George Washington's birthday. This year, the week kicks off on Feb. 19 and culminates on Saturday, Feb. 26.
The national officer team will be spreading out across the United States and will be making Chapter visits next week- with Southern Region Vice President Erik Robinson to visit with FFA members in northeastern Oklahoma.
Robinson will visit with the Bartlesville and Omulgee FFA Chapters next Thursday- and Oologah and Adair FFA Chapters on Friday.

Rain and Snow Event Delivers Most Precipitation of 2022 to Date into Oklahoma
|
Here's the map as of early this morning of the liquid precipitation that Oklahoma received in the storm that rolled through late Wednesday and into midday Thursday- the map above is linked to the live feed from the Mesonet if you click on it.
Note that the northwest and north central counties have very small amounts of liquid precipitation that they recorded- the Mesonet advises that those rainfall numbers will increase as that snow melts- "Parts of Oklahoma received frozen precipitation. As that ice and snow melts and is recorded by our rain gauges, it will appear on our rainfall maps."
Three to seven inches of snow was reported from Buffalo eastward to about Medford from in the northern tier of counties along the Kansas border.
