Disaster Aid out for the count in 2006- It will resurface in 2007.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Senate held a cosmetic vote on a $4.9 billion dollar disaster aid package yesterday and fell short of the 60 votes needed to invoke cloture and attach it to the 2007 Ag Appropriations Bill. I called it symbolic in that the leadership had already indicated that the Ag Appropriations measure was not going to go forward here in the Lame Duck session- but that spending bill and eight others will be dumped into the trash can of history and the process will start over in early 2007 in the new Democratically controlled Congress. The lawmakers will be passing a Continuing Resolution that will carry spending at last year's levels over until Mid February 2007 to give the Democrats a chance to organize themselves before they work on this year's Budget- and then have to quickly deal with next year's budget requests later in late winter- early spring.
Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn was highly critical of the measure as presented by several northern Plains Senators- saying the disaster aid needs to be targeted to those who have really had a loss on their farm or ranch and made some precautions like buying Crop Insurance before the disaster set in.
Oklahoma's man on the House Ag Committee, Republican Frank Lucas, tells us that he is confident that this issue will come up quickly in 2007- but he's not certain how the Democrats will deal with how to pay for the disaster help they will likely propose. It's also uncertain if they will have the votes to override a filibuster from members like Senator Coburn on the Senate side of Capitol Hill.
Congressman Lucas back from South America with other House Ag Committee Leaders.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The rancher from Roger Mills County traveled with outgoing Chairman Bob Goodlattee and incoming Chairman Collin Peterson, as well as with about eight other lawmakers as they made stops in both Brazil as well as in Argentina. They talked with industry reps as well as government officials about the continuing growth of agriculture in those countries.

Congressman Lucas says they talked a lot with Brazil about why they continue to bring what he characterized as "nuisance" legal actions against U.S. farm subsidy programs through the WTO- warning Brazil that there will be a price to pay if they do continue such aggression against our policies.

Lucas also told us a key reason he took his time during the Thanksgiving recess was because of his access to spending time with both Goodlatte and Peterson as we prepare to get serious about writing the next farm bill. He expects to stay on the Agriculture Committee- and hopes to stay as the ranking member of a subcommittee that will likely have jurisdiction over Conservation and Energy issues. Tulsa Farm Show week has arrived- Three Day run begins Thursday!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of the things that we are especially excited about when it comes to the 2006 Tulsa Farm Show is the opportunity to get involved with the Livestock Handling Skills Competition set for this Friday morning during the show. The Oklahoma Livestock Handling Skills Competition and Scholarship awards is sponsored by Oklahoma Farmers Union. Before the event at the show, the contestants will be hosted at a breakfast by Tulsa New Holland, Farm Credit Services of East Central Oklahoma and the Radio Oklahoma Network.
The Ten FFA Chapters that will have teams involved in the 2006 event include Oktaha, Pawnee, Crescent, Wakita, Dickson, Perkins Tryon, Idabel, Haworth, Ninnekah and Tipton. It should be a dandy of a contest.
And we invite you to listen Thursday and Friday mornings at 11:05 am for a special hour remote broadcast from the Tulsa Farm Show on KGGF Radio out of Coffeyville, Ks. We will host that broadcast- and their big 690 AM signal can be heard through a lot of north central and all of northeastern quarter of the state!
Iraq looking to buy wheat for March delivery this week.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That tender for wheat likely will be filled with either U.S. Hard Red Winter Wheat or perhaps Canadian hard wheat. One trader reports that it will come down to one of these two choices. He says that while the Canadians have a lot of high quality wheat left- the Iraqis like the U.S. quality a little bit better.

Iraq has already bought 700,000 tons of US HRW wheat, and 300,000 tons of Canadian wheat in recent months- and has yet to take delivery on any of it. They have just begun securing vessels to start moving that wheat in the last week.

The violence in Iraq has hindered its ability to do routine business- and that has delayed the wheat already purchased from being moved- and has made some companies cautious in biding for this new 100,000 tones of business with the war torn country.

How often should you go feed those Mama Cows supplement????
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OSU's Dr. Glen Selk says that while you might feel like you are doing a better job if you haul supplement every day to your herd- the research suggests it really does not have to happen that often. It seems like about three times a week works well, assuming you have adequate forage supplies available to those cows.
Glen talks with us about this subject of interval feeding and we feature him on our Beef Buzz today on the Radio Oklahoma Network. You can hear his thoughts on this subject by clicking on the link we have provided below.
Early Seed sales in the Midwest suggest up to 8 million more acres of corn coming in 2007!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are indications from early bookings for seed corn in states like Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin that farmers have made the decision to try to plant more acres of corn in the coming growing season. With the price of corn hovering at a ten year high- there is a lot of talk about those prices "buying" corn acres- lots of corn acres.

Dan Cekander with Fimat says he thinks that we may well see eight million more acres of corn this coming season versus 2006. Seed corn sales are reported to be running 30 days ahead of normal in several areas of the corn belt- and farmers are also committing to applying anhydrous ammonia to their fields- a sign they will NOT plant soybeans, a plant that doesn't need a lot of extra nitrogen fertilizer to get best yields.

It's still early- but apparently the continuing build out of dozens and dozens of ethanol plants is helping pull corn prices to a new plateau- and pulling more acres into that crop as a result. Perhaps the folks most concerned about this trend are livestock producers- as they are facing these historic price levels as a real profit robber based on current operating practices.

Paul Jackson of Apache is in our thoughts and prayers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Paul is in the hospital in Oklahoma City and will likely be there for a few more days. Paul, of course, is the long time Commissioner on the Oklahoma Wheat Commission and he and Dosia have served since the inception of the Oklahoma Ag Leadership Advisory Council, the group that advises OSU on the operation of the Oklahoma Ag Leadership Program. If you have the time- I know he would appreciate a card- I wouldn't suggest a visit at this point.
He is in the Mercy Oklahoma Heart Hospital and that address is
Paul Jackson,
Room 203,
Oklahoma Heart Hospital,
4050 W. Memorial,
Oklahoma City, Ok. 73120.
