We actually do have wheat pasture this year after all!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That's one of the things that Oklahoma State Wheat Specialist Dr. Jeff Edwards shared with us as we talked with him at the 2006 Oklahoma Wheat Growers annual meeting this past weekend. He calls the condition of the 2007 crop as one with a line drawn along State Highway 51. South- we have a decent wheat crop shaping up- assuming some "on time rains" as we have limited subsoil moisture to fall back on anywhere in Oklahoma. North of State Highway 51, things vary from being decent to being ungerminated in locales where we simply got no precipitation this fall.
On wheat pasture, we got decent amounts of forage clippings at the Marshall research station- and further south, some Canadian County locations were estimated by Dr. Edwards to approach almost normal levels of forage. Not everybody has wheat pasture- but many folks do as we go dormant for the winter season.
We also talked with Jeff about lessons learned from the last year of rather difficult wheat crop production. The simple and quick response is- conserve EVERY drop of soil moisture you can. You can hear Dr. Edwards' thoughts on all of this by hitting the link we have provided below.
Needing help on passing the farm down the family line? OSU and KSU can help!
Farm families contemplating the transfer of assets and management from one generation to the next should register now to attend Keeping the Family Farming workshops scheduled for January and March. The workshop series is intended for Oklahoma and Kansas farm families, and will take place Jan. 5-6 and March 23-24 at the Comfort Inn, Midwestern Sq., in Enid, located at 210 Van Buren St. The workshops are sponsored by Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension and Kansas State University Research and Extension.
“To experience the full benefit of the program, participants should attend both workshops as a family to learn and work through the many dimensions of such a serious decision,” said Damona Doye, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service farm management specialist. Workshop sessions will help participants understand the potential tax repercussions and legal issues involved with selling and transferring assets, compare business entity options, estimate financial needs in retirement, evaluate alternative strategies for transferring the family farm, determine the family’s current financial position and identify productive ways of resolving potential conflicts.
DEADLINE for signup is next week- December 20th! A registration fee of $200 per family of four participants is required, and will cover the cost of two workshop notebooks, meals and refreshment breaks. Additional participants are $100 each. The registration is non- refundable. To register, send a check with your name, address, phone, e-mail and the names of family members who will attend to the Garfield County Extension Office, 316 Oxford, Enid, OK 73701. Make checks payable to Garfield County Extension. The Garfield County office number is 580-237-1228.
Making Beef a part of the Holiday Tradition- Heather says that makes it a REAL celebration!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As we hit the holiday season in full stride- the Oklahoma Beef Council has their message out on the airwaves about making great memories by having one or more of your family get-togethers become a beef gathering. We talked this week with the Executive Director of the Oklahoma Beef Council, Heather Buckmaster, and she told us that EVERY meal should be centered around beef this season (I know Roy Lee- we'll talk pork first of the week!) but if that can't happen- plan on including at least one or two great beef roasts in your family and friends plan for the wrapup of 2006.

Heather and I also talked about the 2007 fiscal year which is already underway for the OBC- and some of the plans for the year for beef checkoff efforts. I am especially intrigued about the continuing efforts of Oklahoma to send checkoff monies to California and work directly with the California Beef Council and their Hispanic promotion efforts in southern California. That effort was a huge success in 2006- and plans are being worked on to build on that success with additional efforts in 2007.

You can hear our conversation with Heather by clicking on the link below- AND you can check out the Oklahoma Beef Council web site and some great Beef Roast ideas by clicking here!!! Bon appetit!

Dates for the Unwanted Pesticide Pickup Program set in February.

Our thanks to Joe Neal Hampton for providing us the dates for the next two Unwanted Pesticide Pickup Days planned here in the state of Oklahoma.

February 20 is the date planned for north central Oklahoma in Drummond, and February 22 will feature a pickup day in Webbers Falls for folks east of I-40.

We have linked the OSU webs site for the Unwanted Pesticide Pickup Program below. The Altus pickup effort last week was called a real success, with over 62,000 pounds of materials hauled in to be disposed of- with some folks hauling materials in from more than 100 miles away.

Let us hear from you!!!

When the organization that you are a part of has an event up and coming- let me know about it. You are literally my eyes and ears out across the state of Oklahoma- and with right at a thousand people receiving this email every day- you are in a position to know about things that I simply can't get around to without your help. So, drop me an email.

I am also always glad to hear your opinions on the current farm news of the day. I need your viewpoints to keep my own ideas fresh and relevant to our farm community- so let me hear from you from time to time on that as well. If for some reason, you don't want me to share your idea with others- please say so up front- and I will respect that.

We appreciate the tremendous support we have received on this project of a daily email- a lot of days, I really don't have any idea of what I am going to be able to write about- and it always seems to to come together. I hope you find it of use in your business efforts.

OSU hopes to conclude Department Head Process before Christmas.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We talked with Dean and Vice President for Ag Programs in the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources for OSU, Dr. Robert Whitson, on Tuesday afternoon- and the Dean says they have made no offers as of yet for either of the Department Head jobs they are trying to fill on campus in Stillwater within the Division of Agriculture. He promises that when he gets a done deal for either spot- he will let us promptly know- and we'll make sure you know as well.
Dean Whitson did confirm that we currently have only one finalist for the Animal Science position- we described the candidate earlier this week without giving you his name- and we wanted to add that detail- he is Dr. Ron Lemenager, currently on staff at Purdue University.
Dean Whitson also confirmed the names of both finalists for the Ag Economics Department job as well- both coming from within the current department. The two vying for the post and who are now the finalists for the job include the current Interim Head of the Department, Dr. Joe Schatzer, as well as Dr. Mike Woods. Dr. Schatzer helped spearhead the effort to develop an Agribusiness major within the department- while Dr. Woods is well known for his work in the rural development arena.
The Bright Orange of OSU pops up in some very interesting places!
We will not have an e-mail for the next couple of days as I am taking a couple of days off with my lovely wife. As we flew out of state yesterday- we had to change planes in Houston- and lo and behold, there was the distinctive logo of the State University of Oklahoma being promoted on a modern bright and shiny airport ad sign at the Houston airport. A couple of weeks ago, I saw a similar sign at the Dallas Love Airport as well.
What does this have to do with anything? Not a lot- but I am very impressed with the OSU marketing team doing some missionary work down in Texas- and it reminded me of a billboard that I saw at a couple of locations in Indianapolis during the National FFA convention back in October- that billboard was targeting FFA members from across the country for the Ag school at the University of Kentucky! I took special notice since that is my alma mater- but the idea of getting out there and marketing yourself beyond your immediate locale was impressive to me.
We all need to be marketing ourselves- whether it is our Land Grant schools- or our businesses- or our industry in general. You might remember that the outfit I work for- the Radio Oklahoma Network- can help you tell your story across the state of Oklahoma very economically and very effectively! And, we have sponsorship opportunities with this email as well- another way to market you or your product to lots of folks in a very positive context. If either of these ideas interest you- feel free to drop me an email or give me a call at 405-841-3675. I will be glad to get you hooked up with one of our specialists that can help develop a proactive marketing plan that will make you money!
