TCFA President Ross Wilson Requests USDA To Waive COVID-19 Payment Limits

Cattle feedlot operators are losing $2-250 for every market-ready calf sold today, said Ross Wilson, president and CEO of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association (TCFA) during a Beef Buzz interview this week with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays. The economic loss is a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The TCFA represents feedlots in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. According to their website TCFA members annually market more than 6 million fed cattle or approximately 28 percent of the fed cattle produced in the United States.
Wilson is asking the USDA to wave the current payment limit of $125,000 included in the COVID-19 relief package.
"Our request for no limits is about maintaining economic viability for all sectors of the cattle industry," Wilson said.
"This is a one-time situation and so we're asking the USDA Secretary to wave the cap," Wilson said.
Wilson said they especially want to protect the cow/calf sector as most of them are set up for spring calving and then marketing their animals in the fall. Spring calves this year typically will not be fed out until the fall of 2021.
No one knows what the market will look like in the fall, Wilson said. That's one reason the program was designed like it is, that it doesn't necessarily have to tie to a direct loss, Wilson said.
Economic analysis by such noted livestock economists as OSU's Dr. Derrell Peel, indicate the expected loss for the cattle industry is $13.6 billion.
