Years of Beef Checkoff Research Now Paying Dividends For Consumers, Says NCBA's Alisa Harrison
Mon, 04 May 2020 09:58:58 CDT
Years of beef research and developing consumer-oriented content is now paying dividends explained Alisa Harrison, senior vice president of global marketing and research for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, during a conversation with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays.
Three out of four American consumers have been forced to shelter at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Harrison said, and that means a lot of them are learning, or re-learning, how to handle and prepare beef.
"Our most immediate concern was helping consumers cook beef at home," Harrison said.
The NCBA official said they shifted their focus in mid-March to help consumers.
A lot of that great content that we have stored about choosing, preparing and storing beef as well as comfort recipes we have on our website, Harrison said.
She noted they were able to quickly get this information out because they have years of content the beef checkoff has paid for.
"It's always out there and ready for duty," Harrison said.
Consumers have responded in large numbers as Harrison estimates they have reached about 13 million consumers since mid-March and the how-to videos have been viewed close to 10 million times.
"We've seen an 82 percent increase of visits to the beefitswhatsfordinner.com website since March 15 as people are clamoring and are thirsty for knowledge on how to eat beef," Harrison said.
The beef industry has expanded their reach to all consumers, Harrison said, as everyone is at home now and they love to cook beef.
Some younger consumers have benefited from the educational information as they have been forced to deal with unfamiliar beef cuts as delays in the food supply chain presented challenges.
"It's been great to serve consumers at a time when they really needed it," Harrison said.
