Cattle Producers Happy To Meet In Person During This Week's NCBA Summer Conference Says NCBA's Colin Woodall

Cattle Producers Happy To Meet In Person During This Week's NCBA Summer Conference Says NCBA's Colin Woodall After wrapping up the annual NCBA summer meeting in Denver, Colo., this week Colin Woodall, CEO of the National Cattlemenís Beef Association visited with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays about the impact of having an in-person conference amid the pandemic.

Weíve had nothing but positive response to be here in person, Woodall said. Iím really surprised by that to be honest because I thought once folks got here, they would be nervous, he said.

The cattle producers were the only group meeting at the Gaylord Hotel and Woodall said NCBA took every step possible to keep members safe.

I think a lot of folks just wanted to see each other again and check on how everybody was doing, he said.

The success of the United We Steak campaign promoting summer grilling season was a major topic of the conference.

It has really taken off with over 270 million (digital) impressions and we still have a month to go in the campaign, Woodall said.

Among other topics discussed was government assistance for the pandemicís impact on the beef industry. Asking for government assistance is a rarity for the cattle industry.

This was also a heavily debated discussion and when we looked at the impact of COVID-19 on our industry, we decided our policy allowed for us to advocate for the funds, Woodall said.

A lot of our members have been able to get some payments and hopefully help them recover some of the losses and get them into 2021, he said.

The NCBA executive said he expects more federal money is coming but is concerned if it will be helpful because of the arbitrary April 15 cutoff date.

We do believe this could be an opportunity to help our members catch up if they marketed after April 15, Woodall said. Just changing the date to April 16 would make about $100 per head difference.
