The U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef Provides a Framework For Producers To Be Profitable For The Long-Term Says  Past Chair Ben Weinheimer Ben Weinheimer, immediate past chairman of the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, says the USRSB has significantly evolved since it's inception more than six years ago, especially over the past 12 months.

Weinheimer, who is also vice president for the Texas Cattle feeders Association, recently visited with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays.

If you look back a year ago when the U.S. Roundtable finalized the beef industry sustainability framework, Weinheimer said, that's the foundation different segments of the industry can address for water, air and land resources, as well as caring for our animals and employees.

During my tenure as chair we spent a lot of time explaining what the framework means and it is not meant to be a prescription for what producers should or shouldn't do, he said.

It's more about here's some guidelines to evaluate your own operation and identify areas important to you, Weinheimer said.

The USRB covers all areas from the animal to the dinner table.

The roundtable has been around for about 6 years representing all segments of the industry from cow/calf to the consumers, he said.

Cattlemen throughout this process have had a very strong voice and opportunity to make sure the roundtable fits in with what our industry is all about, he said.

Detractors say cattle producers shouldn't be at the table with environmental and animal activists, but Weinheimer takes a different approach.

There is less criticism today than there used to be because of cattlemen getting involved and focused on the fact we do have to be profitable for the long term, he said.

We have a lot to be proud of and a lot we can share with others and let them better understand the cattle industry, he said.

It's about giving them a chance to come in and learn and better understand what it is that we do every day, he said, and then speak on our behalf to their stakeholders about the beef industry.
