U.S. CattleTrace Is a New Organization Focused On Beef Cattle Traceability

A relatively new company headquartered in Wamego, Ks., is focused on setting national standards for cattle traceability.
U.S. CattleTrace is a nonprofit, national organization devoted to developing an animal disease traceability program that would protect livestock wellbeing, the cattle industry and public health if a disease outbreak would occur, said Callahan Grund executive director for U.S. CattleTrace.
Grund was recently interviewed by Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays.
Grund said CattleTrace started as a pilot project funded by USDA, the State of Kansas and private funds.
The program is essentially a contact tracing system that would assist state and federal animal health officials in tracking sick cattle and identifying other animals that might have been exposed to them more quickly and efficiently, Grund said.
Right now, we don't have any existing regulations for traceability of cattle under 18 months destined for food production, Grund said.
That's one area missing in our traceability efforts in the U.S., he said.
The U.S. and India are the only two of the 10 developed countries exporting beef that don't have animal traceability, Grund said.
We don't want a disease outbreak to occur but if it does, we want something that is going to protect our food supply and our livelihoods, Grund said.
Traceability comes into play anytime there is comingling of cattle, similar to what happens now during the COVID-19 outbreak and contact tracing if and when cattle are mixed with others that tested positive for a disease, Grund said.
For ranchers this would be whenever their cattle leave the ranch and mingle with other cattle that would be the point, if a disease outbreak would occur, health officials would want to know, Grund said.
Grund said armed with this information, producers and animal health experts can take steps like sequestering and treating animals before they can impact the overall health of the herd or enter our food supply, mitigating the spread of a disease during an outbreak.
