Express Ranches President Jarold Callahan Says This Has Been a Challenging Year But They Expect Good Demand For Their Oct. 5 Fall Bull Sale

The impact of COVID-19 has been felt across all sectors of the agricultural economy, including the cattle seed-stock industry. Jarold Callahan, president of Express Ranches, recently visited with Ron Hays, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director, about how his business is coping with the pandemic.
This has been a tough year for cattle seed stock producers as people are not traveling as much, Callahan said.
Callahan and his staff are preparing for their fall bull sale Oct. 5.
Certainly, it's been a challenging year, but every year has its challenges, he said.
You have a lot of inputs and you don't control Mother Nature, he noted, as drought has made it difficult for some producers in the trade territory.
The market has suffered as packers have dealt with pandemic-induced labor challenges.
There has been some good news as the domestic and international demand for beef has been good, Callahan said.
We've sold more cattle online and we use Superior Livestock video as producers have turned to that avenue to purchase cattle, he said.
We video all the cattle so you can go online to view the cattle before the sale, he said.
The quality of our cattle is in high demand, Callahan said.
There still seems to be interest in top end genetics, he said.
Callahan said they have a good set of bulls for the Oct. 5th sale.
We have some bulls that will add value to the commercial herds, he said.
The Express Ranches President said the sale will feature about 270 Angus bulls and 45 Herford bulls.
We supply all the information to the commercial guy so he can make the decisions, he said.
Every bull we sell has genomically-enhanced EPD's
This is the best estimate of an animal's genetic value as a parent combining all available sources of information.
It's like that bull has already sired 10 to 25 progenies depending on the individual traits, Callahan said.
We try to give as much information as possible so they can make the best decisions for their commercial or purebred herd, Callahan said.
