Cattlemen's Congress Expected to Have a Huge Economic Impact

The first ever Cattlemen’s Congress, Jan. 2-17 at the Oklahoma City fairgrounds could drop a $50 million economic impact on the city, said Tyler Norvell, executive director of the Oklahoma Youth Expo, and board member for the new show.
The Cattlemen’s Congress was organized to take the place of the 2021 National Western Livestock Show in Denver which was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Norvell was recently interviewed by Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays.
It’s the best of the best, the national championship of cattle breeds, Norvell said.
The show will bring purebred cattle producers from around the country to Oklahoma City and Norvell is excited about crowning a national champion in both the breeding heifer and bull categories.
One thing we’re doing that’s never been done before, to my knowledge, is we are going to pick a supreme overall open class breeding heifer and open class breeding bull, Norvell said.
This is modeled after the Canadian Western Agribition beef show in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Norvell said this has never happened in an open class show in this country and if you have ever watched video of the selection process at the Canadian show, it is awesome.
The grand drive for supreme champion happens at 5 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 13 in the Jim Norick Arena.
The barns will be buzzing with activity throughout the 15-day event.
We took the schedule framework replicated from the Denver show because that is what people are used to, Norvell said.
He noted they will use more space than normal to allow for social distancing.
Norvell listed several show location highlights.
The Norick arena will be the main show arena and Barn 6 , where we usually have the hog show during OYE, will be where we show the pen bulls, he said.
Barn 3 will be a socially distanced trade show and the Superbarn, where we show the sheep and goats at OYE, will be a sale arena, he said.
Norvell is most excited about the economic impact of the Cattlemen’s Congress.
It could be $25 to $50 million, Norvell said.
OYE is a $25 million impact over 8-10 days and this is 17 days, Norvell said.
This will provide a boost for hotels and restaurants in the area that have been hit hard by the pandemic.
Norvell issued a strong warning for participants to follow safety guidelines for the show.
We continue to monitor the COVIDE situation, but people are going to have to cooperate and adhere to the guidelines, he said.
With all the pre-show excitement, Norvell said they are open to hosting the show again but wants to get the first show completed before making any future plans.
We are open to discussing it, but we want to get through it first, but the feedback has been overwhelming, he said.
