Oklahoma City's Central Location Helped Breed Association's Pivot Quickly When Denver Canceled, Says Shane Bedwell, American Hereford Association

Oklahoma City's central location is one of several reasons' cattle breed associations were able to quickly rally their members when the Denver National Western Stock Show cancelled last fall.
Shane Bedwell, chief operating officer and director of breed improvement for the American Hereford Association, recently talked with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays and pointed out the benefits of having the replacement show here.
Bedwell is also on the board of directors for the Cattlemen's Congress, Bedwell said.
It was a big honor to be a member of the board of directors for the Cattlemen's Congress, Bedwell said.
He credited Tyler Norvell and the OYE staff for pulling the show together.
We had a vision and a need for the cattle industry to have this show, he said.
The location of Oklahoma City is central to a lot of folks and shows how tough and resilient the cattle industry is, Bedwell said.
This is a great venue for displaying our genetics, he said.
The pandemic infused 2020 forced Hereford breeders to exercise flexibility, he said.
Every week was different and when Denver cancelled, coming here just made sense, Bedwell said.
We're showing 300 junior heifers and a really big open show along with a nice pen show, he noted.
Bedwell said breed improvement is something he is very passionate about it.
Our breeders have embraced the tools and taken a great foundation of genetics and made it better, he said.
New data from the Meat Animal Research Center indicates the Herefords are gaining ground on other breeds.
We're within a pound of the Angus cattle on birthweight EPD, he said.
We will continue to emphasize the outstanding traits of Hereford cattle, he said.
It's really been neat to see the amount of genetic gain and progress that has been made, Bedwell added.
