American Hereford Association Executive Jack Ward Proud of Breed's Genetic Improvements

Having logged over 20 years of experience with the Hereford cattle breed, Jack Ward, executive vice president of the American Hereford Association, said there has been tremendous genetic improvement in the cattle.
I am just so very proud of our members and what they have done and accomplished in terms of genetic improvement, Ward said during an interview with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays.
We have a Certified Hereford Beef program that has added value to the breed, Ward said.
We’re not here to dictate what breeders use but provide the necessary tools for them to be profitable, he said.
More than 20 years ago the association had the insight to adopt whole herd reporting, which is an unbiased genetic evaluation, Ward said.
Typically, nearly 90 percent of our registered cattle come through that program, he added.
Our breeders understand the importance of genetic evaluation and improvement, Ward said.
We have one of the most comprehensive young sire test programs there is in the industry, Ward said.
Along with what we do from a marketing standpoint, these are tools to help and support our members, Ward said.
Looking ahead to the future, the Hereford Association chief encourages breeders to embrace new technology.
I think the big point is to be acceptable of new technology and change, Ward said.
Ward wants breeders to be open minded and committed to their customers.
I think the short-term outlook for the beef industry is nice, Ward said.
I think beef has certainly gained some strength around the world, he added.
We have to continue to focus on efficiency because that is what drives profitability, Ward said.
