Tight Beef Supply Indicated in Latest USDA Cattle Inventory Report Says Katelyn McCullock, LMIC

Tight Beef Supply Indicated in Latest USDA Cattle Inventory Report Says Katelyn McCullock, LMIC A deep dive into the latest USDA Cattle Inventory Report indicates a tighter beef supply situation for the coming year, said Katelyn McCullock, director and senior agricultural economist for the Livestock Marketing Information Center.

The cattle inventory report shows total cows and calves are down about three tenths of a percent, she said.

This is our signpost to show where the direction of our cow herd is going, she said.

The 2020 calf crop was down about 1.3 percent and the revised 2019 calf crop was down about 2 percent from 2018, she said.

That’s about a half million head lost, McCullock said.

Beef Cows were down about 1 percent nationally.

The top five beef cow states are Texas at the top with 4.685 million head, and Oklahoma 2nd with 2.189 million cows.

Other top five beef cow states are Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas.

The ongoing drought’s impact on the nation’s cow herd was evident in the Colorado number dropping 15 percent, losing 110,000 cows.

Another interesting statistic showing in the report was the number of cattle grazing wheat pasture, a big deal for Oklahoma.

The cattle grazing on small grains saw a huge rebound from a year ago, jumping 7.5 percent with 1.7 million head, McCullock said.

We still do have more cattle out there waiting to come on feed, McCullock said.

A reduction in the calf crop from last year is setting up for tighter supplies in 2021, she said.

We’re going to see beef supplies for the next couple of years probably smaller than prior years, she said.
