Latest Technology on Display at Express Ranches Spring Bull Sale March 5th

The annual spring bull sale at Express Ranches in Yukon is scheduled for March 5 and Jarold Callahan, president of Express Ranches, said they use the latest technology to deliver the best animal for the commercial cattlemen.
All the bulls we sell have genomically enhanced EPD's, he said
It means we pull blood on these calves, beginning at three months of age, and that indicates the animal's genomics and their ability to transmit those genetics to their offspring, Callahan said.
It's very powerful, he said.
When we sell a bull it's like that bull had already sired a calf crop, depending on the trait, somewhere between 8 and 22 calves, Callahan said.
It should give that commercial cowman added confidence that he is going to reduce calving problems, produce an efficient animal and get what he needs, Callahan said.
You don't have to study the individual percentiles on genomics, all you have to do is look at the individual EPDs, Callahan said.
If I am going to buy a bull to use on heifers, I want him to be an 8 or above on CED (calving ease direct) and below 1.5 on birth EPD, we call those four-star calving ease bulls, he said.
We've tried to boil this down so it's easy to use for the commercial cattleman, Callahan said.
The Express Ranches president that those important numbers also include the dollar value ($Values) or bioeconomic indexes.
The two big ones are dollar M (maternal) and dollar B (beef), Callahan said.
These are derived from certain EPDs and put into their indexes, he said.
The dollar indexes work well, and we have confidence the dollar Beef perform well, he said.
