NCBA's Tanner Beymer Expects Today's Senate Ag Committee Hearing on Cattle Market Transparency to be a Continuation of Ideas From a Recent Meeting in Kansas City

A U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee hearing on cattle market transparency is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon and Tanner Beymer, director of government affairs and market regulatory policy for NCBA, believes it will be a continuation of ideas brought up by agricultural economists during a recent meeting in Kansas City.
There was a workshop in Kansas City with ag economists tasked by the office of the USDA Chief Economist providing what they saw in the cattle markets the last two years, Beymer said.
The NCBA staff member said there was consensus among the participants there is no such thing as a one size fits all approach or silver bullet solution to the myriad of issues we're facing in the industry.
We know we need to see more price discovery and there is a processing capacity shortage, Beymer said.
Not all the plants are operating at maximum capacity due to labor shortages, he said.
A market only works when everyone plays by the same rules and the Department of Justice continues to investigate the packing industry to make sure everyone is playing by the same rules, he said.
What we expect to happen (at the Senate hearing) is an exploration and discussion of processing capacity and price discovery, Beymer said.
The NCBA official said he also expects to see conversation between witnesses and committee members regarding the host of cattle market bills introduced recently in the Senate.
Beymer said he does not believe the hearing was called as a legislative hearing to examine legislation introduced to address some of the market issues but more aimed at letting the committee hear directly from the ag economists and cattle producers.
